Dreaming is one of the more mysterious activities our brain engages in and Bill Nye has decided to help us understand it a little better using the magic of emoji. In one of his “Emoji Science” videos developed for Mashable, Nye walks us through the different states of consciousness with the help of the cute little animated faces we use to express emotions on our mobile phones.

So our brains essentially shuffle through three different states: There’s being awake, there’s rapid eye movement (REM) dreaming and there’s non-rapid eye movement (NREM) dreaming. Nye explains that REM dreaming is typically the most intense form of dreaming because it takes place in your brain’s visual cortex and it makes you see images that you interpret as reality.
