Live from Verizon’s next-generation Droid unveiling

The Droid brand is largely responsible for Android’s success in the United States. Verizon’s massive marketing budget and large subscriber pool helped Google’s operating system reach new heights with the release of the Motorola Droid, Droid X and Droid RAZR, among others. Following Google’s acquisition of Motorola, and with HTC and Samsung pushing their own brands, the number of Droid-branded devices has dramatically decreased over the past few years. But the latest rumors suggest that Motorola and Verizon have teamed up once again on three new smartphones — the Droid UltraDroid Maxx and Droid mini. Are these the Droids we’ve all been waiting for? Verizon’s Droid press conference is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. EDT, 9:00 a.m. PDT, and BGR’s live coverage follows below.

Motorola is adding some more color to the smartphone world with its soon-to-be-announced Droid Ultra. A leaked picture posted by @evleaks over at The UnLockr shows that one version of the Droid Ultra will have an eye-catching red kevlar casing that will be an alternative to the standard all-black Droid Ultra that the company will likely unveil next week. @evleaks says that the other models that Motorola is set to launch next week, the Droid Maxx and the Droid Mini, will come in either white or black. Motorola’s entire upcoming Droid family pictured in new leak

Earlier reports have suggested that Motorola is prepping three new Droid-branded smartphones that will debut on Verizon’s network later this year. We have seen images of both the Droid Ultra and Droid Maxx, and on Wednesday @evleaks posted a purported press image of the smaller Droid next to its larger counterparts. Specs remain a mystery for the Droid mini, however the latest rumors claim the Droid Ultra will be equipped with a 5-inch full HD 1080p display, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 10-megapixel camera. The Droid Maxx is expected to be slightly thicker and include a larger battery, similar to the Droid RAZR Maxx. Motorola confirms no new devices coming this week

Motorola has confirmed that the small event scheduled for later this week isn’t for the Moto X or its rumored Droid-branded smartphones. The company revealed in a statement to Android Community that no products will be announced or launched at the July 10th and 11th events at Google’s Mountain View headquarters. Motorola employee Guy Kawasaki is merely hosting a private gathering of friends, it would seem. Earlier reports had suggested that the highly anticipated Moto X smartphone would make an appearance at the event. When it was confirmed that this would not be the case, however, it was speculated that Motorola would use the event to debut the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid mini.

Leaked images reveal next-gen Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx phones

Even more so than other brands, Motorola smartphones have a tendency to leak ahead of their official announcements. It’s a tradition that dates back many years and it was carried forward yet again over the weekend as images of two more unannounced Motorola smartphones were published on the Web. The first comes from the xda-developers forum and it shows the upcoming “Droid Ultra” in the flesh. The specs are still something of a mystery, though a recent FCC filing reveals a few obvious notes: 4G LTE support, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. Next up is the “Droid Maxx,” which has been pictured courtesy of @evleaks. As has been the case in the past, the Maxx is expected to be a carbon copy of the Ultra with the addition of a larger battery. Verizon is expected to unveil both phones in the coming weeks and the leaked images follow below.

Unannounced ‘Droid Ultra’ appears on Motorola site

A new wave of Motorola smartphones expected to launch in the near future will be the first crop of devices to feature a heavier Google influence, and their collective debut may be fast approaching. A webpage containing the name “Droid Ultra” has been published on Motorola’s website alongside specs, which are thought to merely be a placeholder since they match the specs of the current-generation Droid RAZR M exactly. The only Droid Ultra details found on the page are the mention of several available glossy colors and a DuPont Kevlar body. Also of note, the “Think Thin” tag line suggests that the Droid Ultra could be one of Motorola’s thinnest smartphones to date.
