A woman claims that her iPhone 6s Plus went up in flames

Samsung is dealing with a huge mess surrounding the Galaxy Note 7, as more and more reports have surfaced suggesting replacement units that are supposed to be safe keep exploding. Samsung’s widely publicized predicament has also drawn added attention to smartphone fires from other vendors — after all, these things happen all the time, just typically not with the frequency we’ve seen with the Note 7. Several iPhones have exploded in recent weeks as well though, including an iPhone 7, an iPhone 7 Plus and an iPhone 6 Plus. The issues aren’t comparable to Samsung’s troubles, but Apple is already investigating the matter, as a second iPhone 6 Plus has now caught fire. More →

Batteries are the most dangerous component in a smartphone, and we were all reminded of that when Samsung had to issue an unprecedented global recall for its new Galaxy Note 7 flagship phablet. But while the Note 7 had a defect that made explosions far more common than they typically are in phones, this is an issue that has always affected mobile devices. And no phone is safe. After we saw reports of batteries inside iPhone 7 and an iPhone 7 Plus handsets blowing up, another iPhone has now made the news for the same reason: The battery exploded and the phone caught on fire.

‘Bendgate’ strikes again, but this time it’s called Touch Disease

There’s a new issue affecting plenty of iPhone users, one that Apple is still keeping a tight lid on. Specifically, the “Touch Disease” is an iPhone 6 Plus condition that affects the phone’s TouchID sensor and the screen. Users report a flickering gray bar along the top of the screen and a faulty TouchID sensor. Apple doesn’t have a repair plan for the issue, which seems to be widespread and affecting mostly 5.5-inch devices. But third-party repair shops can fix the problem, and a report explains why it all happened. It appears that Bendgate problem Apple had to deal with soon after the iPhone 6 launched is back. More →

Verizon thinks now is a good time to buy an iPhone 6 Plus

It’s almost September 2016, which means new iPhones are about to be unleashed on the world. It also means the iPhone 6 Plus is two years old, and probably preparing for retirement. But even so, Verizon thinks now’s the time to buy the first Apple phablet, and it’s throwing massive discounts at shoppers in an effort to clear store shelves.

Galaxy S7 vs. iPhone 6 Plus camera showdown: Apple blog insists iPhone is the winner

Galaxy S7 vs. iPhone 6 Plus camera showdown: Apple blog insists iPhone is the winner

March 9th at 9:37 AM

Apple has dominated the smartphone market for years in a number of key areas. In some of the most important aspects of the user experience, however, Samsung has pulled ahead. For example, Apple’s Retina display, which first appeared on the iPhone 4, dramatically raised the bar in the smartphone industry. Since 2010 however, the Samsung’s Super AMOLED screens have far surpassed Apple’s LCD displays.

Another space where most experts agree Samsung has passed Apple is in the all-too-important area of camera quality. The Galaxy Note 5 had what was arguably the best smartphone camera of all time when it debuted last year, and most reviewers seem to believe that the camera on the new Galaxy S7 is even better. Well, almost all reviewers… More →

iPhone 6s Plus One Hand

There’s finally a solution that lets you use the iPhone 6s Plus with one hand

There’s finally a solution that lets you use the iPhone 6s Plus with one hand

I wrote about my time with Apple’s iPhone 6s Plus back in October, and not much has changed since then. With the iPhone 6s as my main phone now, I still miss some things about the Plus version — mainly that big gorgeous display and the optical image stabilization that helps improve image and video quality. I use my smartphone far too much with one hand to keep the Plus though, and since publishing that post I’ve corresponded with dozens of people who feel the same way.

Well, if you’re willing to do a bit of tweaking, there’s now a solution that will let you keep your Plus-sized iPhone and actually use it comfortably with one hand. More →

Did Apple quietly improve Bluetooth speed on iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2?

Did Apple quietly improve Bluetooth speed on iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2?

Bluetooth speed probably isn’t the kind of hardware detail you’re interested in when buying a new computer or smartphone, including the iPhone 6s. In fact, Apple did not even talk about the iPhone 6s’s Bluetooth capabilities during its September 9th announcement event, though it did mention the Bluetooth abilities of the new Apple TV and remote during the event.

However, it appears the company did bump the Bluetooth speed from Bluetooth 4.0 to Bluetooth 4.2 on the devices it released last year. More →

Google’s Nexus 6P is now the second-best camera on DxOMark

The Nexus 6P Nexus 5X haven’t even started shipping yet, and the new phablet is already being praised in camera reviews. Google on Tuesday insisted on the camera performance of its new devices, explaining why there’s no need for optical image stabilization and suggesting the phone is even better than Apple’s most recent iPhone.

Website DxOMark already put the Nexus 6P through its camera tests, concluding the phone is better than most smartphones, coming in behind just one smartphone. More →

Best iPhone Widgets

10 of the best iPhone widgets in the world

10 of the best iPhone widgets in the world

September 3rd at 10:06 AM

When Apple first added widget support to the iPhone and iPad, Apple fans had mixed feelings. Many Apple users had been waiting for widget support for years, and they had hoped to see home screen widgets similar to the ones available on Google’s Android platform. Instead, Apple confined its widget support to the Notification Center, where widgets stay hidden from sight until the user swipes down from the top of the screen.

There are definitely pros (battery life!) and cons (no zero-touch information) to Apple’s approach, but the very fact that widgets are almost always hidden from sight has led many people to forget about them all together. Let’s fix that: Here are 10 apps with some of the best iPhone widgets available right now, and many of them are completely free to download and use. More →
