It’s been ages since an entry in the Halo series lured me in with its multiplayer. I played Halo 2 obsessively with friends a decade ago, and custom modes in Halo: Reach’s Forge ate up several weeks of my life, but I’ve never had any real interest in playing Halo competitively for months after release.
After spending two hours with the Halo 5: Guardians campaign, I have a pretty good grasp on how the series has improved and what could have been done better. This is not an attempt to extrapolate a review out of my exceptionally limited time with the game, just an observation of what’s working and what’s not. More →
After spending several hours with the Arena multiplayer beta at the beginning of the year and going hands-on with the new Warzone mode at E3, Halo 5: Guardians has quickly become one of my most anticipated games of 2015.
Earlier this month, I had a chance to play through two missions of the campaign for the very first time, giving me a chance to see the final (and possibly most vital) piece of the Halo 5 puzzle. So how does single-player hold up?
The very first demo I had a chance to play at E3 2015 this year was Halo 5’s new multiplayer mode, Warzone. It’s completely unlike the 4 v 4 Arena mode you’re used to, fusing player vs. environment elements with 12 on 12 multiplayer combat. If standard multiplayer isn’t dynamic enough for you, Warzone might be what you’re looking for. More →
We’ve known since the day it was announced that Halo 5: Guardians would be receiving its own collector’s edition, but until now, we’d never seen exactly what the package would entail. That changed on Tuesday when GameStop Italy’s website leaked the contents of the Limited Collector’s Edition early. More →
We’ve still got a few months left to wait before Halo 5: Guardians hits the Xbox One this fall, but in the meantime, 343 Industries has teamed up with Vanguard Games to bring a new top-down shooter to PC, iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone. Halo: Spartan Strike is the sequel to Spartan Assault (the first mobile entry in the Halo series), and it’s out right now. More →
One of the most fascinating stories in video game history is that of Master Chief, aka John-117. We’ve never even seen the face of the hero of the Halo franchise, but in anticipation of Halo 5: Guardians, 343 Industries has launched an ARG (alternate reality game) that will dig deep into the Chief’s past.
Last weekend, I played my first few rounds of Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer. I’d seen the videos and I’d heard the concern from Halo fans, but I wanted to actually get my hands on it before I made any judgments. After all, Halo’s competitive multiplayer has never been my strong suit, so I was more excited about the changes than the Halo purists.
The highly anticipated mutliplayer beta for Halo 5: Guardians is launching later this month, but Microsoft has given us the opportunity to jump in for an early preview event this weekend. Starting today at 4:00 p.m. ET, the beta will go live and, providing there aren’t any issues, we’ll be playing for at least an hour right here on the site with an embedded stream from our Twitch channel. Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the most anticipated Xbox One exclusive of the month will hit store shelves on Tuesday. With four full campaigns, over 100 multiplayer maps and the debut of Halo 2: Anniversary, it’s going to be hard to find more value in a game this holiday season, but the best part of the whole package won’t be available at launch. There is plenty to look forward to in the upcoming Master Chief Collection, but the highlight of the package is Halo 2: Anniversary, an HD remake of the FPS classic released 10 years ago on the original Xbox. On Friday, Microsoft released a free documentary detailing the process of remaking Halo 2 for the current generation. If you’re anxious for the release of the game, this should help tide you over. Although Halo: The Master Chief Collection comprises four games we’ve already played, 343 Industries still hasn’t shown off much in the way of gameplay footage since announcing the project at E3 this year. That changed this week when the team took the stage at Comic-Con to reveal not only the gorgeous new cinematics that would be appearing in Halo 2, but also the graphical differences between Halo 2 remastered on the Xbox One and the original game, which you can swap between with a single button press.
