The camera quality on Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus is already best in class, but Apple certainly has no plans to rest on its laurels and let the rest of the industry play catch-up. According to a new research report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s larger iPhone 8 models will likely sport dual optical image stabilization.

As it stands now, of the two camera lens’ on the iPhone 7 Plus, only the wide-angle lens comes equipped with optical image stabilization. Kuo’s note, obtained by MacRumors, relays that it’s only a matter of time before the accompanying telephoto lens gets in on the action as well.

The research note reads in part:

We believe Apple will add OIS function to the telephoto CCM in order to enhance the selling points of next year’s new iPhone. We think photo quality and optical zoom range may both improve as a result. We expect the telephoto lens will be redesigned to support OIS in the telephoto CCM, with challenges likely coming from: (1) the need to increase the image circle of the telephoto lens, which will lead to longer calibration time and a more complex assembly processes; and (2) a redesign of the telephoto lens, as an increased image circle will result in degraded photo quality around the corners.

It’s worth noting that Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 8 will reportedly not be graced with a dual camera setup. That being the case, the feature will only be available on the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 and the premium iPhone 8 with the edgeless and curved OLED display.

All in all, Apple’s plans with the iPhone 8 camera are starting to look incredibly intriguing. Earlier today, we relayed how Apple’s next-gen iPhone may incorporate some compelling new augmented reality features into the camera app itself.
