Pokemon games are officially coming to Nintendo’s NX

Pokemon Games Nintendo NX

The Pokemon Company’s chief executive has confirmed that his company will develop games for Nintendo’s upcoming NX console. This won’t come as much of a shock to anyone who has been keeping up with the unprecedented success of Pokemon Go, but the company’s ties to the NX were previously just a rumor.

“The NX is trying to change the concept of what it means to be a home console device or a hand-held device,” said Pokemon Co. CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara in a recent interview, according to The Wall Street Journal. “We will make games for the NX.”

What’s especially fascinating about Ishihara’s quote is not his confirmation that Pokemon will appear on the NX (after all, the franchise has appeared on virtually every Nintendo console since 1996), but rather the words he uses to describe the NX itself.

Nintendo has hinted that the console could replace both the 3DS and the Wii U, but few official details about the hardware itself have been revealed. On the other hand, plenty of unofficial details leaked out this summer, most notably in a Eurogamer report which claimed the NX would be a portable console with its own display and a set of detachable controllers. Ishihara’s comments are vague, but they could certainly apply to the product described in this summer’s leaks.

Ishihara wouldn’t say whether or not the development team might have something ready for the NX’s launch in March 2017, nor what kind of games we might see over the course of the console’s lifespan.
