Samsung, Apple to overtake Nokia in smartphone share this quarter

Business

Nokia’s smartphone reign, which lasted nearly 15 years, is coming to an end. Analysts from Nomura Research say Nokia’s lead in smartphone units sales will be lost this quarter for the first time since Nokia became the top smartphone company in the world by sales volume in 1996. But it gets worse — according to Nomura, Nokia won’t be topped by just one company this quarter… both Samsung and Apple will surpass Nokia, pushing the struggling Finnish smartphone maker to the No. 3 spot globally. “Nokia looks set to relinquish its smartphone crown to Samsung and Apple,” Nomura wrote in a note to investors on Monday. “Further emphasizing the shift in power to Asia is our forecast for HTC to almost match Nokia during 2012.” Nokia will retain its lead in overall cell phone sales, Nomura says, thanks in large part to the company’s strong position in emerging markets.

I’m not surprised to see Apple overtake them. I am surprised to see Samsung do it. I didn’t realize the SGS and SGS II sold like that on a global level.

      Same here.

But well, they give all the best components to Apple, and then the rest to themselves. The rest of the industry can only get the remaining stuff.

Actuallly, I would say Samsung keeps their best components for themselves and give apple the leftovers. Ever see an iPhone with an AMOLED screen or a dual core processor? No? Didn’t think so.

What “leftovers” are you talking about? iPhones are still great devices, despite the latest model being a year old. Just because apple isn’t the first to a dual-core phone or an AMOLED screen doesn’t mean they are getting “leftovers.” When have you heard of apple jumping on 4G, super screens, dual cores etc.. On the first day they are available.

Over here in China, the biggest phone and smartphone market in the world, Samsung and HTC and Nokia rule the roost (in that order).  Apple is a small share of the market, rarely seen.  Lots of KIRF iPhones, but they’re using either Android or Windows Mobile.

When you have a market of 800 million cell phone users, it’s not hard to take the top spot.

I live in China too, Beijing. Here iPhone is the most populare. I, like many of my friends, gave up Nokia and switched to iPhone.

Here in Shanghai, it is mainly foreigners with iPhones; you see very few among Chinese nationals.  Tons of Samsung and HTC phones, however…

Then you really must not pay attention to the news.  With the SGS and SGS II being sold to practically every carrier you can think of, they are destroying in sales.  Amazing when you always see people complaining about Samsung.  SGS II is arguably the most anticipated Android waiting to officially hit the US. feel that if Apple releases the iPhone to all the major US carriers and China Mobile, while Google continue their Android assault, these two will control the global market share for a decade and more.

So did I miss something? When did Nokia hire Lewis Black as their CEO? Was it to compliment Steve Ballmer in the MS meetings?

Nokia did this to themselves.  They had every chance to hop on board the Android gravy train and ride it to the top.  Bafflingly, the chose to snub Android and talk smack about it every chance they got.  They were a great, innovative company.  Now… not so much.  Adios Nokia.

      HA!!  You made me laugh

It’s funny because more then a year after release the iPhone 4 screen is still regarded as the best screen on a phone to date.

Haha. Ya right. Nexus s is better and the sg2 blows it away. Keep thinking that though.
