BlackBerry Curve 9300 for T-Mobile hands on

BlackBerryCurve9300-1

Man, news on RIM has been quiet as of late. And why wouldn’t it? RIM has some interesting products coming up, but let’s not beat around the bush — they can not really compare to the mind-blowing devices that have just been released. From the simply amazing iPhone 4, to the incredible Incredible, to the super-large super-capable Droid X, it’s hard being a mid-range player with a mildly dated operating system. With that said, we’d like to officially welcome the BlackBerry Curve 9300 into the BGR offices. Here are some first hand impressions of the unreleased device:

It’s, uh, just like the BlackBerry 8520. Literally. Same camera, same size (we believe off hand), same feel, same screen, same keyboard, same buttons. So what’s changed? Besides a glossy metallic plastic finish on the case, and the inclusion of a UMTS radio…not much. As we just mentioned, the BlackBerry 9300 we have features T-Mobile’s AWS 3G bands, so if that’s something to push you over the edge to upgrade from your existing 8520, you’ll be pleased as punch.

We also wanted to get your feedback before we do a full hands on gallery/review. Anything you want to see featured? Maybe size comparison photos to a specific handset, or possibly some network speed tests on the BlackBerry 9300 over 3G? Let us know and we’ll include as many of your requests as possible!

All these comments about RIM releasing the same phone…

Gee, Apple released the iPhone how many times in a row where it looked EXACTLY the same?

    3 times?

With only minor technical differences each time and everyone goes “ooh, ahhh…”.

On the fourth try they finally do… well, something… slightly different, but still pretty much looks the same to me.

How is this different than what RIM does? And they have several other phone models to deal with.

Apple is now putting in video chat in there phones with front facing cameras…. RIM has a 20 year old browser they still to this day have not update much. Apple innovates and creates new ways to appeal customer although it may be minor sometimes… But a blackberry is a joke of a smartphone with solid email… thats it.

Add a good ass touch screen with a smooth OS and a good browser and RIM is back in the game… its no one elses fault but their own. Storm — what a joke

why does it have to be a touch screen, i personally do not like touch screens. i do agree on the browser.

Are you serious about apple? They copntribute crap other than applications. iPhones are complete jokes, Ha! Straight garbage, if they’re “SOO GREAT!” why is it that majority of iphone users are transitioning to droid?? Blackberry SMACKS iphone

Because apples first iphone was and still is better than every BlackBerry out there. RIM is living in the past.

if the hardware inside the Curve 9300 is better than that’s different. the iPhone gens r all made to intentionally look the same..but with each gen, there were definite differences that separated them. they’re like PC’s now..get into the groove!

One thing I love about blackberry reviews is that we can ALL agree on one thing. And its not a fanboy war like the android/iphone phone posts.

*yawns* really surprise the blackberry is still on top

Well this is not very reliable when the pic shows ATT on the screen as the carrier and t-mobile on the case. does not mean will be t-mobile USA either.

Do you not know how GSM devices work? Or did you not bother to read any of the preceding comments?

GSM devices (in the United States this means T-Mobile and AT&T) use SIM cards that can be swapped in and out of those devices. This particular Blackberry supports the EDGE network that T-Mobile and AT&T both use, but it only has 3G support for the bands T-Mobile uses… the same way the iPhone does (but in reverse). In this case, Boy Genius only had a spare AT&T SIM available, so he dropped it in to check out the phone. It is designed to take advantage of T-Mobile’s EDGE and HSPA networks, and will be offered at retail by that carrier.

Yes I do, probably much more then you. Just pointing out that it isn’t reliable, not that it couldn’t be used on other carriers. Like most of these sites, they get rumor and make it fact or steal private info and call it sources. These sites are why we are not able to get info from carriers directly. While nice, these sites are having negative effects in the industry. carriers have delayed or dropped devices due to leaks and thus people get unhappy.

Strange. Branded for TMobile. But the network is it running on is ATT’s EDGE network. So, is this real or what?

Evo is awesome, touchscreens have come a long way. I could never go back to a small screen like bb

Okay, here’s my take on this. I’m a firm believer of the concept of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” However, what RIM needs to realize is that their devices ARE broken. Or rather, they’re like a broken record. Virtually every single Blackberry I’ve ever seen is just a re-hash of the same old tired design, with slight improvements here and there. Blackberry OS 6 looks interesting, but if they insist on sticking with same old form factor, they’re going to lose out in the long run. Full-size touchscreen phones are the big thing right now, and sadly, RIM’s attempts at that form factor with the Storm models was a failure. I hope they do a new Storm with Blackberry OS 6. If they do, and put a decent CPU in it, then maybe we’ll see them gain some market share back. Oh, and please, please, PLEASE get rid of the clicking screen. Haptic feedback is nice, moving, clicking screen is not. A solid screen makes for a sturdier phone.

    awesome

Please read the previous comments before posting something along the lines of: “Hmmm, the phone says T-Mobile but it has an AT&T sim card…. IT MUST BE FAKE!”

To clear it up, AGAIN, they didn’t have a spare T-Mobile sim and the phone was unlocked. Read comment #1 to see BGR say it themselves.

  • fondoo

does anyone know when its coming to ATT?
