AT&T prepping network to handle "unannounced" devices?

Breaking

We’ve been told by one of our connects that AT&T has apparently been meeting individually with regional executives to inform them of some changes to the AT&T network. What have we heard? Well, for starters, they seem to be focused on prepping the network to compensate for unannounced devices and also future devices that will use “heavy data.” What about tethering options? AT&T has said that changes to current data plans and tethering plans (or availability) will change when the network is able to “sufficiently handle the load.”

Phonejunkie, I have no idea what “AT” means, but I think it is funny you call me a liar when BGR was the first to report the memos where ATT decided to offer its customers incentives to not use as much data, in an attempt to not drown their overtaxed network. That’s not a lie-go look for it yourself. The reason that Apple is looking to move to Verizon is pure business and they are at the point where business is lost due to ATT’s network. I work for the third carrier and we hear about customers heading into our stores and switching from Iphones all the time. It is never because the Iphone isn’t a great device-it is their issues with ATT’s network. Sorry, but when I am on the sales floor for my company I have met at least 15 such people since, say Thanksgiving. I don’t hate ATT, I had them for my personal carrier for over 10 years and I don’t lie-it’s just what I have experienced. Sorry if that ticks you off as I don’t work for Big Red and don’t have any more against ATT as I would any other company that competes with my own….

    • TomTpm

If you work for a 3rd carrier – Verzion and AT&T doesn’t consider you competition.

The 4th gen iPhone is going to cricket and the itablet is going to boost. My grandma’s brothers sisters uncle of a nerd who works at ghetto wireless in Sheboygan told me so!

VZW leases ATT cell towers for their hybrid gsm international data devices is the rumor here in NYC…..just what I heard.

    • http://www.vzw.com Sha B

It’s very possible..cell carrier’s have transparent agreements for tower usage both in and outside of the USA..that’s how they can offer “no domestic roaming”..and Global roaming for devices that use both technologies.. The international markets are a whole different kind of beast, which is why none of that is drawn into the “VZW vs. AT&T” coverage commercials, and rivalry that is portrayed in the media.. much like the “East Coast, West Coast Beef”.. things are not always as they seem in the media..

  • BDW

I believe they are prepping it for Android and WebOs devices. I don’t think the Apple Tablet is coming to AT&T. Now if it goes to Verizon as planned doesn’t that pretty much confirm the next iPhone will be on Verizon as well?

  • eric

hey maybe they are actually taking analysts advice and taking a mere 5 of the many billions of dollars the iphone has made them and using it to play catch-up. I use AT&T and i love it except when i’m in NYC of course, the love turns to hate. BUT seriously now that the exclusivity is most likely going to end, AT&T is probably going to make it wayyyyy better. I’ve noticed a huge increase of quality here in massachussetts and it was really good before. So i’m optimistic for all the att users in NYC. HANG IN THERE!!!

  • diabl0

I’m still sticking to Red V and not that deadlast carrier: http://bit.ly/att-going-down-verizon-is-laughing
Each carriers will always have their own flaws, but me? I’ll choose something that’s less more evil.

    -wow what a feedback

“less more evil”? That was confusing.. lol

  • http://thehighwaygirl.com Brian

Its probably AT&T trying to do a few things:
    (a) keep their network relevant; saying its for “unannounced devices” makes it sound cool and hip and might keep a few users from leaving

    (b) add support for phones based on the Qualcomm SnapDragon processor. Right now, that chipset doesn’t use the 850MHz that AT&T uses for its 3G connection

    (c) generate some free PR for the company that is going through horrendous experiences of network upgrades. Rep in Boulder, CO told me they lost close 1/3 of their customers because the upgrades went so poorly and took longer than anticipated.

  • bigheat

seriously, 1/3 of 81 million subscribers?? You’re telling me that AT&T lost 26 million subscribers because of delayed network upgrades?? That rep in Boulder should be shot!!

  • Chuch

    Tablet to AT&T, just announced

at&t gained over 2 million customers in the 3rd quarter (4th qtr results not out yet) which was more than any other carrier. They also had less people leave the company to go else where. While I’m sure it’s fun for people to say that at&t is a horrible carrier and has the worst network, I’m sure at&t is okay with that as long as they continue to lead the industry in new customers and retaining old ones. Just a thought.

  • shizz

is an employee for the it is funny to see how so many people are misinformed. no one has talked about how the iphone has cripped that “other” network overseas. or how Verizon can not possibly handle the voice and data exchange at all since they cant do it now. if ATT network is so bad why are 81 million people using it?

    • http://YourNexusOne.com Alice

      > if ATT network is so bad why are 81 million people using it?

Because if you want an iphone… like 40 MILLION people do… then you are *FORCED* to ONLY use AT&T.

Watch how few people buy AT&T iphones… after Verizon iphones go on the market.

Which would *YOU* buy: a carrier that covers 85% of the country with 3G? Or a carrier that covers 18% of the country.

Yes… Verizon covers 5 *TIMES* more of the USA.

      • Hilarious

keep dreaming about anything VZW and Apple. Your CEO, who you help pay 20 mil a year is a dooshbag and called out Jobs.. I hope Jobs tells everyone at Apple to never to business with them. Cunt.

      • Dihce

Sorry for coming to the party a little late, but this one cracked me up
40 MILLION iPhone users in the US? where are these numbers coming from?
There MAY have been 40 mill iPhones sold, but definitely not all in US and no where near that many are on the network right now. Replacements are included with their sales numbers as well.. so yeah maybe 40 million sold, not nearly that many are in use in the US right now.. just sayin

  • Navyen

ATT will be getting another iPhone as well. The only change will be that it won’t be exclusive to only ATT anymore.

  • Tetherball

    IT’S TETHERING BITCHES
on the gazillion iPhones they already can’t support.

    Should be amusing.

  • Chris

I know that this will probably be voted down, but it has to be said.

I laugh everytime at the stupidity of people that say AT&T needs to spend the billions of dollars they get from iPhone users for several reasons.

First, they typically make less on iPhone customers because of the original subsidy and the fact that most iPhone users become eligible for upgrade after 1 year which 90% of them use to get a new iPhone.

Second, they spent over 30 billion in the last two years on their network. Yes I know that was both wireline and wireless, but the majority was for wireless and remember that even some of the wireline upgrades help with backhaul for the wireless network

Third, there is no way that they could have forcasted that the 3G would draw so many people in and tax the network so much.

Finally, network building is something that is planned years out. Also, do you how much red tape carriers have to go to add towers? Not to mention that if AT&T isn’t the one providing the hardlines to the towers they have addition obsticals with upgrading the backhaul. So even once they relized what was going on there was no way to just flip a switch.

Because I am sure it will be said, yes I used to work for AT&T. Actually I have worked for pretty much every carrier and currently work for Verizon. But the difference is that I am can be rational when thinking and talking about this stuff.

    • http://YourNexusOne.com Janice

      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

      > most iPhone users become eligible
      > for upgrade after 1 year which 90%
      > of them use to get a new iPhone.

I’ve never seen ANY numbers that claim 90% (nearly all) iphone users throw their phone away and get a new one every year.

      > they spent over 30 billion in the
      > last two years on their network.

If any carrier waits until they are 30 *BILLION* dollars behind… before they decide to update their network… that’s very telling about how poorly they “plan”.

      > there is no way that they could have
      > forcasted that the 3G would draw so
      > many people in and tax the network

Huh? Even the most novice users saw that 1 *MILLION* iphones sold during its first week… 100% exclusively on AT&T. What kind of a bonehead would wait *YEARS* before they start to upgrade their network to handle the traffic?

      > do you how much red tape carriers
      > have to go to add towers?

Why has Verizon been able to do it so successfully, then? Even with AT&T spending BILLIONS, Verizon still has 5 *TIMES* more 3G coverage than AT&T.

      > I used to work for AT&T.

I think you just answered our questions. AT&T uses poor planning, extreme greed, and your kind of “it’s too hard to install more towers” excuses… and keeps call them “solutions”.

      • TomTpm

Janice – this guy addmited he worked for AT&T. Can’t you admit you work for Verizon?

You had me until you posted the “maps”

      • Dihce

haha I love the VZW fanboys, they’re like zombies “5 *TIIIIIMMEESSS*” (Braaaiiiinnsss)

Calling your network “The 3G network” doesn’t make it a true 3G experience.. When your rural areas are just as fast at at&t’s EDGE in the same locations, how can you claim “3G” ?
at&t’s reference to 3G is their speed, not just a cool name for a network. So, yes, their network covers 5 *Times* the 3G coverage of at&t, “But when you compare, there’s no comparison” (Thank you Luke)

  • IloveMYiPhone

I really love how people bash at&t so much.
The iPhone counts for over 70% of at&t’s data network. Data use like this will always have an inpact on a carriers network. How do you think Verizon would look if they started carrying something and it crashed their network. All that 3g talk down the drain.

Also, 3g means voice and data transmitted at the same time. Verizon cannot do this. So why would anybody think Apple would lower their standard for an American company? Given this American company is currently the largest in the U.S thanks to the Alltel purchase. They do not use GSM which stands for Global Systems Mobility. Why would they make one style of phone for one carrier that might bring them a few million subscribers at first. But the issue they will certainly have with their network shortly after launch will send people packing straight back to at&t.

Not only the network issue and the network tech issue’s, Verizon also wants a piece of everything. Their greed sent them to at&t in the first place. They have total lock down on all their devices and the have total lock down on their V-cast system. If you know the greed of Verizon ($350.00 etf) then you know they would have had plans to get something out of the itunes.

    Verizon= rual communities
    at&t= the rest of us

    • http://YourNexusOne.com Patty

      > Verizon= rual communities
      > ATT= the rest of us

What? Verizon and AT&T both cover the big cities. But only Verizon covers 5 *TIMES* more of the other areas, too.

I work for a marketing arm of AT&T and was specifically asked to suspend our promotions until this week because of a new device. Tablet?new phone plans? Either way, it’s happening this week and it’s big.

“i hear alot of talk back and forth about who is better at this or that” what it comes down to is that no matter what carrier you work for, you are just making someone else richer and we are getting closer to our graves. Your little attempt to try and justify why you work at a company saying they are better, is a form of a way too make yourselves feeling better for continueing to support the brain washing of upper superiors to put a larger bonus checks in there pockets, as they cut our checks. i find that this to be the most hilarious thing, i’ve been working in this industry since 1999

  • http://www.dressyourmobile.com GM

Anyone check out the latest consumer reports? It’s true, AT&T’s network is going down in all areas; customers service, voice, and data. Verizon has been rated #1 in ALL areas for service and customer support for what, the past 4-5 years?? Matter fact, I’m looking at it now, and AT&T seems to be almost dead last in every major city. I sure hope they up their network, a lot.. because T-mobile and Sprint are moving up. iPhones are cool, when you can use them to their full potential, aka 3G hotspots on AT&T. I guess wi-fi can work too? Lol….

ilovemyiphone clearly has no idea what s/he is talking about. Verizon has a tower for data and a tower for voice, that’s why it is so reliable! Why would we get the iPhone? Because we have our 4G/LTE network, or whatever you wanna refer to it as, coming out REEAL soon. I’ve been employed with Verizon for a few years now, and to be quite honest I’ve had many customers, as of late switch to Verizon simply because of their poor overall coverage.

People love the iPhone, not AT&T.. you’d be surprised on how many times I get asked DAILY when the iPhone is coming to Verizon, laff. Statistics don’t lie…

    • Raisedcrazy

GM, You clearly don’t understand ‘your’ Verizon network, nor your devices. iPhone is ran, marketed, and sold by Apple, AT&T is just the network it is on. The iPhone sucks for data management (Look at RIM), voice quality, and battery life. They are all well documented issues with APPLE’s iPhone. Blaming the network that took Apple up to support ‘their’ device with it’s flaws( FYI-Verizon had a shot at it and declined!)and then blaming AT&T for the devices issues, I really don’t get that. To my earlier statement, RIM does a pretty good job with their devices on all carriers networks, if you look back, their earlier devices sucked too, but they were not a pop culture, must have toi be hip device! No RIM made a business tool that was great for it’s time. FYI on the verizon network, it’s the most reliable because they put a generator or backup power device at every site. They do NOT use tower separate towers (one for voioce and one for data) as the expense would be outragous! It’s CDMA and maybe you should go look up how the network works in a CDMA enviroment. Thanks for the chuckle today.

  • Calamity D

I dont see why verizon is comparing to at&t with the difference in the 3g and ppl still feeding into this, when you only able to use either voice or data at one time , so over 80 million or what ever the number isonly doing one thing, where as at&t over 80 million ppl using voice or data and probably half of that doing both, CMDA was good in its day and may have more coverage with evdo but once you look at it, its pretty much a super fast EDGE network

    • http://www.vzw.com Sha B

The advantages of CDMA technology for VOICE capabilities continue to keep VZW atop of AT&T with call quality, and droppage.. and to the statement “where as at&t over 80 million ppl using voice or data and probably half of that doing both” .. I HARDLY think that NEARLY half of those 80 million are using voice and data simultaneously..the majority of mobile phone users are not seeing practicality in this capability..EVEN IF it can be advantageous in certain situations.. the need to download while on the phone has not proven to be so great a necessity as to warrant such a wildly absurd claim.

      • DollarBill

I do WebEx on my IPhone. Not even possible on Vz network, unless I get a second phone!
