In the blink of an eye, Deadpool went from niche comic book character to breakout movie star earlier this year. Much of that is due to Ryan Reynolds’ outstanding performance as the Merc with a Mouth, but as with any other recent superhero movie, none of it would have been possible without hundreds of visual effects.

Over the weekend, Rodeo FX (the team that worked on Deadpool) shared a video showing off some of the visual effects work they did on the movie — comparing the unedited footage with the shots we actually saw in the theater:

According to their website, Rodeo FX completed 215 VFX shots for Deadpool. The sequences they worked on “required fire and embers, grotesque skin alterations, and set extensions,” all of which you can see in the video below.

“I really appreciated the passion and artistry that Wayne and the Rodeo FX team brought to the show,” said Jonathan Rothbart, VFX supervisor on Deadpool. “Rodeo became one of my favorite facilities. They consistently did more than was asked, bringing their own sensibility and finish to the shots. I always felt like I was dealing with true artists who loved their craft.”

If you want to know more about the visual effects in Deadpool, be sure to visit the Rodeo FX website, where the team goes into much greater detail about the project. And if you want to see their work, Deadpool is out now.
