While the expectations for big budget comic book movies are always high, there’s a lot riding on Wonder Woman when it comes to the DC Extended Universe. Following the financially successful but critically panned Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad of 2016, Wonder Woman is the studio’s last chance to make a good impression before the Justice League movie arrives at the end of the year.
Thankfully, the trailers for Wonder Woman have all been promising, including the latest one.
Over the weekend, Warner Bros. Pictures shared the official Origin trailer for Wonder Woman, focusing on the titular hero as she trains with her fellow Amazonians and learns to harness her unique powers:
“Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.”
Wonder Woman
clearly hasn’t abandoned the dark tone of the previous DC films altogether, but Diana herself does appear to have a more positive outlook on the world than the grim heroes (or anti-heroes) of last year’s DC movies. With a splash of color and some welcome levity, the upcoming origin story could paint the second-place comic book universe in a whole new light going forward.
Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 2nd, 2017.
