After rumors about the HTC Supersonic have been swirling around the Internet for a few months, it is now time for the Wall Street Journal to chime in and contribute to the hype surrounding Sprint’s first WiMAX handset. According to people “familiar with the matter,” Sprint is expected to announce the HTC Supersonic next week during a presentation by Dan Hesse at CTIA. The timing for such an announcement fits in nicely with Clearwire’s promised 1H 2010 delivery date for the first WiMAX smartphone and we certainly have seen enough spy shots and hands-on videos to whet our appetite for this Android-powered 4G smartphone. In a mere few months, the HTC Supersonic has gone from being a name on a list to the star of its own home video. Spotted on YouTube is a short, sweet, and dark video that shows the HTC Supersonic in action. The video is small on new details but its presence serves to remind us that Sprint’s first Android WiMAX handset may be worth a close look when it finally launches sometime in the first half of 2010. Anyone passing on the current crop of handsets to wait for the Supersonic and its rumored 4G speed?

In an interview with Forbes Magazine, Sprint revealed that its first WiMAX enabled handset will launch in the first half of 2010, a few months ahead of its projected 2H 2010 launch. Paget Alves, Sprint’s president of Business Markets, confirmed that the handset and its 4G connectivity will target businesses and government agencies as well as consumers. He declined to provide additional details on the phone but previous rumors suggest that this handset is the HTC A9292 WiMAX bar that was spotted on a Sprint inventory list at the beginning of 2010. This mysterious candybar is thought to be the HTC Supersonic, an Android-powered, Snapdragon-packing handset that was spotted and photographed back in January. Anyone with a need for speed ready to jump on board with WiMAX and pick up this blazing fast handset when it launches?
Mr. Blurrycam strikes again and this time, he brings along his friend Mr. Grainycam to shoot a few quick shots of the HTC Supersonic. The handset in the photos has the look of a typical HTC prototype device with its minimalistic appearance and name emblazoned on the back. According to the tipster and as previously rumored, the Supersonic will feature a 4.3 inch AMOLED screen, kickstand, 1GHz Snapdragon processor and Sprint WiMAX compatibility. Any opinions on the validity of these photos are welcome in the comments and if you need a closer look, you can hit the jump for one more blurry and grainy shot of the backside of the phone. More →
