Android tablets now 30% of the market, Windows tablets outsold PlayBook in Q2

Tablets

Microsoft has yet to launch its tablet-optimized operating system and yet slates running various versions of the Windows operating system still managed to outsell Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook last quarter. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics’ latest report, Windows-powered media tablets owned 4.6% of the global market in the second quarter of 2011. In the same period, RIM’s PlayBook made up just 3.3% of the market. The firm also shows that competition may finally be heating up in the tablet space. Apple, which owned more than 94% of the market in the second quarter last year, saw the iPad’s share slide to 61.3% according to Strategy Analytics. Over the same period of time, Android tablets jumped from a 2.9% share to a 30% share last quarter. Strategy Analytics’ report comes just one week after rumors surfaced that RIM may soon discontinue its current Wi-Fi tablet. RIM would later adamantly deny the rumors, saying it had “no plan to discontinue” production of its Wi-Fi PlayBook. RIM stated last month that it shipped 500,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in the fiscal first quarter following the tablet’s debut this past April.

Calculate percentage based on how many items have actually been sold, not how many have been shipped.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Of course the Android market is growing in the Tablet world. The Problem is 90% of them are crap and are dirt cheap. If anything is going to kill the Tablet market, it will be these poor quality Android devices. Before the iOS Tablet, there was nothing worth talking about and now the iPad has really made an awesome example of where Tablets need to be. There are a few good Android Tablets but only Android is to blame for it’s name being drug in the mud for allowing it software to be on these other devices. The downside to iOS is that it only goes on Apple device but on the upside at least people know where their product came from.

So toyota and nissan are crap and everyone should get Mb and BMWs because they are higher quality and build…..umm cool bro

If you want you can buy the crap or look for something of quality in no matter what you buy. I think with transportation quality should be high on your priority, but you are more concerned with luxury and to that I say if you got the money then sure include luxury in your decision process. Lol

RIM needs to get email and the other basics running on the Playbook. They need to offer mobile data connection options. Even more, they now need to release it as a new product with a slight redesign because they ruined any chance this current Playbook had.

the title of this article should be…”Apple’s ipad market share sinking fast”….at least that’s what it would of said if it was directed at RIM….BGR loves apple

… that means 3-4mil android tablets has been sold in Q2, good, but could be better …

Playbook launched halfway through the quarter, so clearly it’s not going to make a huge splash in overall numbers.  Also, it’s being compared to multiple Windows slates…

Let’s see how it does when native push email, Android application support, and the 4G version(s) come out…

MAX… Where are you?   I’m disappointed that your enlightening douchebaggery about the PlayBook isn’t posted out here yet.    Here, I’ll start it for you… “You RIM loving mental midgets……”

I think the Android will take over the tablet market just as they did with smart phones.

This articles title is so wrong.  These numbers reflect SHIPPED NOT SOLD.  So what market share are you talking about?  Sell all that inventory and you can resubmit this article properly.

I always get a kick out of watching the iSheep fanboys  start crying “shipped does not equal sold”  but at the same time any mention of the word on how man iPhones or iPads shipped especially coming out of Steve Jobs mouth,  they all go into spastic convulsions of ectasy like a bunch of coozed up Pentacostals on Sunday and start rolling around on the floor and licking the carpaet and running into walls.

      LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Applesucksfatties

@Bos – great comment.  I’m shocked the iSheep haven’t provided whitty comebacks from their oversized iPhones (aka iMaxipads) while sipping their lattes at Starbucks.  iDouchers…

According to their official numbers apple has sold in the neighborhood of 28 million ipads. Do any of u really believe that there are 14 million android tablets out there? Hahaha. These numbers are for Q2(april may june) apples fiscal Q3 happens to fall inside Q2 and they are shipped numbers. Apple shipped 9.3 million. Android in total shipped the 4.5 million. Any bets on how many are actually in use by consumers? U fandroids claim bgr writes misleading articles to pump apple up. Well here’s a misleading article to pump android.  true story™©®

Apple sold 28 millions iPads since launch (April 2010).
Strategy Analytics’ latest report is saying that last quarter (Q2 2011), Apple sold 4.69 millions iPads and Android tablet manufacturers sold 2.30 millions tablets.
Since Apple can’t meet the demand due to supply issue and Android tablets are actually good products, these numbers doesn’t seem crazy to me.

If apple has 60% of the market with 28 million ipads then android would have
        to have 14 million(maybe 12-13) to hold the 30+% have u seen 100 random
people, friends, strangers co workers with tablets? Did 30 of them with
anything other than an iPad? Yeah didn’t think so. What did u see? Maybe 1
        in 10?

Just saw my first Android tablet in the wild.  At a Carrow’s Restaurant…being used by the staff…seemed to be wirelessly networked into their computer/cash register system…it displayed a restaurant layout with which tables were occupied.  I guess iPad isn’t the only tablet in “enterprise”.  [It looked like a 7" Galaxy Tab running...wait for it...froyo =( ]

Funny thing tho’…the one waiter trying to use it couldn’t figure something out and kept tapping on the screen.  He called over the manager…who explained that he was looking at it upside down.  She then pressed a few icons on the screen.  When it didn’t do anything, she threw it back in the drawer and said…just use the register.  True story.

I have seen other analyst reports on other Web sites indicating that the Android units mentioned in this report are units “shipped” not “sold.” Given what I’ve been reading elsewhere, it seems very possible that the Android cartel is trying to the manipulate vague sales data and that the 30% market share report is not credible.

    • Anonymous

…just ask yourself how often you see other tablets in the wild. You just don’t typically see competing tablets out on the streets. It’s an iPad market, not a tablet market.

  • http://twitter.com/gnomehole The Gnome

Sorry, this is the “shipped” market, not sold market – no way this is sold… not possible. (there just aren’t that many idiots out there)

You can have 30% of all tablets sitting on the shelves in stores but it doesn’t make it very impressive.

How many iPads have been shipped but not sold?  I think like 3… no 2… 1.. oops, they are all sold out sorry.

If it were truly 30% sold then that would explain why so many humans are just drooling morons. Most Fandroids I know wont’ even touch an Android tablet.
