Nano a no-go; Times says no tiny iPhone

mobile

As sure as The Wall Street Journal’s sources were that Apple was cooking up a miniature iPhone for release in the near future is as sure The New York Times seems to be that the iPhone nano’s future isn’t very near. The Times says Apple is indeed pondering a cheaper iPhone model, but it won’t be any smaller in size. The report does not delve deeply into how Apple might make a less expensive iPhone model, though it does suggest Apple might opt for cheaper internal parts such as a lower-quality camera and smaller memory modules. Apple is currently focused on finishing its next-generation iPhone, however, which will launch this summer. The device will be approximately the same size as the iPhone 4, the report states, and it may offer more robust voice controls. The Times also says Apple will soon expand its MobileMe services and make them free for iPhone users, which jibes with earlier reports.

it’s already tiny, they need to get rid of those obnoxious bezels that take up 1/3 of the phone. they need a quicker release schedule because with all these android people in the game, 2011 and beyond is going to really leave apple in the dust. sucks to get caught behind and then surpassed by a open platform in such a short amount of time doesn’t it?? lol

      Such wishful thinking.

Surpassed in terms of market share? Who cares? The whole point of market share is to take a disproportionate share of an industry’s profits, not just to be able to say “we have the most market share.” Microsoft had no problem taking a disproportionate share of industry profits. Apple hasn’t struggled in music devices or mobile phones, or tablet computers. Google hasn’t struggled in search. So why is it that Android sells a ton of units but the OEMs are barely profiting, and in some cases actually losing money? Why is it that Apple turns its 4.2% of the mobile phone industry into 51% of the entire industry’s profits? As long as an efficient Android OEM like HTC is getting $376 per device and Apple is getting $625, Android hasn’t surpassed iOS in the area that matters: revenue and profit.

You need to check the numbers, android all together sold 10 mill in phones 2010 Steve jobs says they was doin bad but sold 90 mill units….. But if that’s gettin left in the dust lol

cute little thing. 3.5″ screens are so 2005. wonder when the morons at apple will up it to 4″+ screen

    • Anonymous

By the time Apple gets up to 4″/4.3″ screens we will all be using 7″ Android phones; Angry Birds just isn’t the same on that little iScreen!

      • John

        lol

        lol!

Does 1/2 inch really make all that difference, I’ll rather have better resolution that a extra 1/2 inch.

      • John

ya, it does. until you use a 4.3″ screen, you don’t know what you’re missing. apple fanboy or not, it’s NICE to have a 4″+ scrreen. at that small of a size, you can’t really tell the difference, barely, of the resolution anyway

      • Anonymous

You can’t tell the difference on screen resolution lol? Why? Doesn’t your Droid have a Zoom button?

      • John

        nope, it doesn’t. sorry

      • Anonymous

        LOL @keymaker

You wouldn’t need a damn ZOOM button if your iScreen weren’t so damn iTiny¡

maybe if you’re a 6’5 dude, 4.3 is great…for us normal sized people..the iphone is big enough. i’ve held an Evo and it felt like I had a VHS tape in my hand…

      • GoRow

Yes, size DOES matter. All the ladies say so! (:

    • Joel

I disagree I came from a droid x to iPhone even tho the screen is smaller I’ll take the better resolution any day. There is a difference in the two, colors and sharpness of images and text are low quality on the 4.3 screen it’s like sitting 2 identical specs TVs next to each other. The smaller screen will always have a better picture due to denser pixels

      • sirpaul

I can barely see the difference between 3GS screen and iPhone 4 “retina display”

The same morons that made $4 billion in profit on iOS last quarter? I’m guessing not anytime soon.

I’m wondering when those morons at LG will figure out how to actually make money on Android. Ditto for the morons at Sony Ericcson and Motorola, the latter of whom made a whopping $16 in profit per device last quarter (Apple made $120). HTC is doing a little better, but not much.

      • John

aw that’s a low blow. lg is pathetic. they are a disgrace to android. so i agree with you there.
htc & moto know what’s up. apple is just trying to play keep up at this point

    • Alexander530

2005? Back then displays were mostly 2.3 – 2.7. Remember the n95? When the iphone first came out in 2007, a lot of people were concerned of its size. So I don’t think it’s tiny at all. Others have nothing better to offer, so they thought that a bigger screen would compensate for other inadequacies of their devices.

  • Anonymous

LOL @ crApple. 4+ screen size or your phone is a POS. DROID!

  • http://twitter.com/Davva360 David Moore

I disagree on the screen size because I don’t like the overall size of the 4 inch and 4.3 inch phones that are on the market today.

I would only like a bigger screen if they could narrow all the bezels down and get a 4 inch screen in a phone of very similar dimensions. I would also want to keep the high pixel density that the iphone 4 has. There is no doubt that when you compare screen quality the iphone is way better than any of the 4 inch or larger phones that are currently available.

    • Anonymous

Apple will probably do that with iPhone 7 and, undoubtedly, credit you with the idea.

  • Anonymous

The next iPhone could easily have a 4.5 inch screen without sacrificing the original size of the device, that I believe is sweet.

    • Anonymous

You must be ‘berry small chihuahua’?? Siiiii……

    • Vxk

The Droid X is not bulky, I think even thinner than the iPhone. Doesn’t really have much bezel which is great. Apple can do it. It just would drive the cost up and they want the most profit as possible

      • Anonymous

It’s not thinner than the iPhone 4. The rest? Maybe.

Back to the Ipad 2/3 rumors and and IP5?

Seems like the WSJ is the new National Enquirer

  • Gcombs

4.3″ screen is what Apple needs. Keep the iPhone 4 design figure out that messed up antenna and ether get rid of the home button or make it smaller also touch sensitive or just make it the size of the volume buttons and put it on the side of the phone. I would add keep current iPhone just get rid of glass back new antenna design only 8GB and there’s your $100.00 iPhone.

I don’t think Apple is that ignorant to go with a cheaper version of iPhone. As you all know, at least in America, consumers rather pay more to get high tier phones which they will be locked in for next two years…
Then again, I have been wrong about Apple before :)

  • Petey

Make the iPhone available in all the carrier in the us if they want to earn more market shares. Take out the mandatory iPhone data plan. That will help get more people to buy the iPhone.

  • Chut Pata

There goes a lot of customers who would have switched to Apple because the Nano would have reminded them of Startac. When would a phone company would come with a phone that would replace my wrist watch, and I can carry it everywhere without fear of forgetting

  • Bringit

    iPhone.

  • Senor Chang

“The Times says Apple is indeed pondering a cheaper iPhone model, but it won’t be any smaller in size.”

Am I the only one who sees how stupid this all is?

It already exists, it’s called the iPhone 3GS. WTF??

Just rebrand the damn thing to fool consumers…’iPhone 4 Lite’ or something. Then take home buckets of cash. Easy.

    • Chut Pata

“Am I the only one who sees how stupid this all is?” Yes. MS lacks imagination and can just see what is the hot product in the market, replicate it, and create a monopoly by inking a deal with big guns. Be it MS-DOS or be it WP7. So you can all the MS fanboys, following the MS tradition, fail to see how Apple can come up with a cheap iPhone-4 without reducing the screen size.

For the rest of us, we can see Apple cutting down the total size without reducing the screen size, please Apple has innovations, something MS lacks.

Anyone not suffering from Multiple Sclerosis knows 3GS does not have many iPhone-4 features e.g. front camera. So no, an iPhone Lite is not 3GS.

  • Turducken

Maybe no iPhone Mini as of now, but once Jobs kicks the bucket, the next-in-charge will see to it that one is available.

  • JHB

Where is Gray Powell when you need him? That would resolve this once & for all.

  • Alexander530

I knew it. It just didn’t seem to make sense for Apple knowing how they do things. As for a cheaper iphone, well, the outgoing iphone’s price always drops when the incoming is released, so there’s your cheaper iphone. So again, why would they even bother with another cheaper model? As for the size of the next iphone. I am not losing hope that its display would be bigger than 3.5. I am happy with 3.5, but 3.7 or even 4.0 would make it so awesome.

Hmmm…So blogs like BGR are just perpetuating the rumor mill to get hits? OH THE NERVE!

  • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

only way to make gayguyphone, oops I mean iphone cheaper would be to use cheap parts to build it. O wait, they already do that. Hmmmm. then i guess take the “phone” part of the iphone out. then sell it as ipod touch cuz its almost the same exact thing. O wait, it IS the same exact thing. oh, please die soon, Apple

My bro used to hate Apple because he could not afford their products. Now that he can afford AppleÅ› products that is the only thing he buys.
