AT&T to launch cell phone trade-in program on January 23rd

Exclusive

We have just been told that beginning January 23rd, AT&T will be starting a handset trade-in program. This is the same day AT&T’s new SMS plans are set to take effect. AT&T devices as well as phones from other carriers will be eligible for the trade-in offer. Outside of applying the resulting credit toward a new purchase at AT&T, the carrier will also give you the option of taking a check or donating the money to charity, which AT&T will do for you on your behalf. And you thought Christmas was only in the month of December? Hit the break for a full shot of an internal AT&T document that details the new program.

    finally!

Some non-COR AT&T stores have had third party trade in programs for a long time. Something called FLIPSWAP. What they do is take the ammount that the phone is “valued” at and then allow you to use that ammount as a credit to go to a new phone purchase. Just go to an authorized dealer instead. They’re cheaper most of the time anyway.

Have you ever dealt with flipswap? They are AWFUL. The indirect I worked for used them for awhile and got tired of waiting MONTHS to get paid. Ive heard the same horror story from other indirects as well.

Are you back for good this time?
I guess, if at first you don’t succeed, you can dust yourself off and ‘try again’.

iPhone 4 for for trade in? Let’s see… You can get a $75 credit.

iPhone 4 16GB trades in for $324 at Radioshack and $408 for 32GB.
      16GB 3GS for $160. 8GB 3GS for $123
      3G 8GB for $92

        Oops forgot the #sarcasm tag.

yeah they’ll have to match RadioShack’s trade in #s at least. This is great for people who don’t think about ebaying last yrs phone to get the new one, or for people like me who usually ebay their old phone but might be lazy.. lol

kinda sounds familiar…oh yeah that’s right, VZW already has something like this. Does at&t just copy everything vzw does? In any case, it’s better just to sell your phone on ebay since you will get way more money from either vzw or at&t for your phone.

    • Travisw1992

ummm how about no… AT&T has never copied anything from Verizon douchebag

Been a while since a big carrier has done something like this….. I think Cingular did trades back in ’03 or so….Great that the Death Star brought this back.

So how will ATT give me for a 5 year old cheap Motorola V60 or 4 year old Motorola Razr? Ha ha… I doubt they will give me anything. Better to keep those cheap old phones around for emergency purposes/going to the beach/amusement park and not risk damaging our expensive smartphones.

There is no option to apply the trade-in credit toward the purchase of the new or upgraded equipment…if you don’t choose to donate the equipment you will receive a check in about 2-4 weeks later. BGR got it wrong, again – seems to happen a lot more lately ever since the change in ownership of BGR.

Radioshack is an instant in store credit towards the new phone purchase or can be added to a gift card. No cash or check. Minimum trade in for a working, functional old pos is $10.

is the charity the at&t extra profit foundation?

  • http://twitter.com/4phun Our World

This is a clever way to get the POS pretend iPhones off the street and the AT&T customer into the real iPhone. I know dozens of unhappy customers who thought they were getting a real iPhone when they were snickered into taking an Android by a deceitful salesman.

    • Android is open

Really? Wow you are a moron

= Desparation in anticipation of the Verizon iPhone 4.
I wouldn’t trade-in a pair of funky sneakers to Cingular, let alone a phone they will probably rebrand and resell to a 3rd world country, allegedly.

  • Noogied

Trade in your iPhone 4 at AT&T for $75….or sell it unlocked on eBay for $400. Hmmmm…..

  • Dextosenergy

The FCC ruling didn’t allow them to do it for hardwired service but it did leave cell services open for a tiered service. My guess is that you will see 4G sales slow to crawl.

  • Dextosenergy

Oops sorry i posted a comet on the wrong article.

I am sure I would lost 75% of my mint condition iphone 3gs compared selling on Ebay and getting AT LEAST what I paid for when I started service.

  • Applover

All this talk of E-bay is great for people who hit blogs like BGR. The “normal” consumer does not. This makes it easy for the majority. Last time I check AT&T is the largest carrier in the country. It also creates an instant subsidy to trade-up if you are not eligible.

  • Fred

So have AT&T give me $50 for a trade in on a 32gb iPhone 4 compared to selling it on eBay for $300. I DON’T THINK SO! screw you AT&T!

    • Anonymous

What makes you think they are going to offer $50 trade in?? I didn’t see that info anywhere.
I also posted RadioShacks current trade in values. They have to come at least close to that or better.

AT&T to offer free Motorola Atrix 4G on extending contract for 2-years when bringing in an old iPhone.

Where does it say $75 for an iPhone 4?

wow, AT&T is really doing eveything they can to stay relevant now that they are no longer the only iphone provider. That was THE only thing at&t on any other carrier. Now, almost overnight, they are practically ignored. Thats what happens when you take customers for granted and treat them like a number rather than a privilege. Goodbye AT&T. I really hope this is the end for them

  • CTK

Something just occurred to me … you always hear how crappy the iPhone works on AT&T but I’m not hearing that ALL of their phones get crappy service. Maybe, just maybe, as a phone the iPhone is crap?

  • Jonathanawad

It’s been delayed though. Doesn’t start the 23rd!
