iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 brings AT&T tethering support

att-iphone-tethering

Uh oh, it looks like AT&T’s cell towers are about to be brought offline — though, one could argue they’re almost always offline — MacRumors is reporting that there is an option to set up tethering for AT&T users in the latest iPhone OS beta just released this evening. Though this could be a good sign, Engadget’s reports on AT&T’s comments on iPhone tethering a few weeks back don’t seem to set the mood so friendly. Let us know if you can get it going, will you?

I wonder if Apple is gonna allow a WiFi tether app.

  • rugbyua9

wow… i predict people having meltdowns once AT&Ts network comes to a slow crawllllll….

  • Gia

Wow I am thinking about jumping ship from vzw just for the iPhone, but this has me strongly reconsidering.

    • StevenGlansburg

So you are considering not going to At&t because they are going to allow tethering? WTF?

      • StevenHamburg

come on steven, who are we kidding? at&t can not handle the amount of data usage that would come with tether. not for at least the next year.

so somebody deciding against getting the iphone because he knows that he will spend at least 6 months using it as a regular dumbphone is quite reasonable.

      • StevenGinsburg

        Word!

  • adam

LOL. We have been doing this with rooted android phones for free for how long? Even Verizon does not care it happens. The iPhone is nice but AT&T makes it suck.

    • andy

Bob St. Germain said he was not sure at first whether to believe the Verizon official who called to tell him that the balance of his $18,000 cellphone bill had been forgiven, ending the Dover resident’s long-running dispute with the company over the staggering amount, which his son mistakenly accumulated over a six-week period in 2006.

    • Channan

And they have been doing it with jailbroken iPhones for free for just as long. What’s your point?

But you’re wrong. You don’t need to root your phone for USB and Bluetooth tethering on Android. Just for WiFi tethering. Still, jailbroken iPhones can do all 3, too.

Don’t act like a jackass because sometimes you just look like a dumbass.

      • Adam Litke

Does AT&T care that you are doing it? yes that was my point. I gave up my iPhone specifically b/c I had jailbroken it and they were still intent on charging me for tethering b/c i was using “too much” data. I use my phone as my home internet access point. Bought a droid and never looked back as Verizon seems to not mind me using it for everything. I am over triple a month what they say is “normal” usage. AT&T shut me off at barely over the limit. So say what you wil but you seem to be the only one making a fool of himself.

      • Brian

” I use my phone as my home internet access point.”

Free loader. You were one of those waiting in line in Detroit for your “Obama Money”.

      • Droidman

You’re full of shit!! Verizon has a 5 gb cap, and AT&T is truly unlimited. I have a droid and have seen it first hand!! Get back to 3rd period gym class asshole, you shouldn’t be on bgr during class!!!

      • justme

actually at&t is a 5 gig max on tethered devices as well, however if you were using an iphone they wouldnt know you were tethering seeing as how at&t doesnt “support” tethering on the iphone. and they wouldnt have shut you off for going over the 5 gigs you would have incured a 5 cents a megabyte overage charge.. anything else you have to lie about????

      • Droidman

        Justme,
If AT&T has a 5 gig max, then why isn’t there a 5 gig max on my iPad 3G? If AT&T has a 5 gig max, then why isn’t there one on my wife’s iPhone? She used 7.255 gigs last month. I don’t know if it’s justme, but you are a jackass!

      • justme

        http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/services/serviceDetails.jsp?catId=cat1360001&skuId=sku2940233&_requestid=63806

explains the 5 gig limit on tethering

and the ipad is unlimited for 29.99 but who needs an ipad when you have a netbook???

  • queequeog

AAAAAnnnnd there goes the REST of their network!

    • StevenGlansburg

People with phones other than the iphone seem to be doing fine on At&t. Why doesn’t anyone ever blame the crappy antenna design in the iphone for the problem?

      • Sonya

I’d have to agree, I really do think it’s the iPhone itself that is the problem. That’s one of the main reasons I’d like to see it on Verizon so people can see what the real problem is. But there does seem to be some issue with the network not handling all the data very well.

      • StevenGlansburg

Yup. I’m all for giving it a shot on Verizon. They are the only carrier I personally haven’t had my number on and suppose its worth a shot. Hell, Verizon might even allow tethering for free given their stances on Palm and Android phones…

      • bonesb

Lessee what pops up when you search for “att blackberry bold dropped calls” – maybe 160 posts in just one thread? Huh, must be because of the iPhone?

Check on “att nokia e71 dropped calls” and “att q9h dropped calls”. Yep, must be because of the iPhone.

I’m still wondering why my Moto Z9 was dropping calls about two months before the iPhone 3G was even released. Must have been the iPhone. Yup.

      • justme

60% of all at&t customers are on smartphones using massive amounts of data… no other carrier comes close to matching that.. and no other company invested more into itself than at&t last year or will match them this year. I went to a seminar yesterday on our buildout and its stagering what will happen by the end of this year and mindblowing what happens next year

Wow, what a cheapshoy, what ascholes

    • Lol-ter Kronkite

      wtf did you say?

    • Guzman

      Sent from your iPhone? Lol

  • Justin

Wow, welcome to what the rest of the world has. Amazing that even Canada has 3 national carriers and 2 budget carriers that all sell the iPhone and all support tethering.

    • Norm

….. and 27 people who have actually logged onto the internet, to lookup 1 picture of wayne gretzky!

  • Tig Voo

Dude, All you have to do is jail break your current 3G or 3GS, download PDANet from the Cydia App store, then download the PDANet desktop app for your PC or Mac Laptop and your good to go. It works like a charm. Why wait for OS4?

    • Channan

Or download MyWi and get WiFi tethering on multiple devices at a time, including the iPad and iPod touches for anyone who has either.

  • Dogfather

It’s ok AT&T has so much speed that even if this slows it down still will be faster than VZW…!!!

    • Norm

I’ve not heard of anyone complaining of the speed when their phone connects….

  • Teddy

    Woah. Full 3G on AT&T?

  • nik

I work at AT&T and 1/500 customers uses tethering. And data is data, iPhone users use way more data during normal usage than people that tether so this won’t matter.

    • SupAll

Right. So when the iPhone has the capability of tethering, how much more data are iPhone users going to consume? I know of plenty of coworkers who wouldn’t mind using their iPhones to surf the web when the free wifi at the workplace goes down. Everyone here knows that AT&Ts network congestion is the result of the iPhone and it doesn’t even have official tethering support, yet. Just imagine what hell it would bring to AT&Ts data traffic from just the iPhone users…

      • Shumdit

I think I would be more concerned about why the free wifi at work goes down. I mean if that does not get you upset, why would you care if your phone does not work?

      • nik

so true! but people have internet at their home when they are there and at work too. if this happens we will see a few users jump on the network. but someone going to google from their computer is using the same amount of data as someone going to google on an iphone. further, it is not a congested network all over the u.s. smaller cities have great 3g like mine (sacramento ca) i tether to test my speed at home and regularly get 3.5 megs.

  • The Force

I have been an ATT customer since 1994, even worked for McCaw Cellular for a couple of years prior to the sale to ATT .

I use a Blackberry Bold 9700 and love it, even on ATT. Superb call quality, very few dropped calls, outstanding battery life. No, it does not have near the available apps as the iPhone, but who needs all of those apps….it’s a communication tool in the end.

  • Hellzone

AT@T is a load of SHIT!
I just called them to enable mine, it was no go.
I guess they need more time ? <_< i want to go back to 3.X and use it. CLOG up there network

    • Shumdit

OS 4.0 is not out yet genius. It’s in Beta.

  • joshua

it’s not iPhone users that are data hogs, it’s iPhones. somebody said they have a 9700 blackberry and they love it on AT

  • andrew

If BGR was any more negative towards AT&T, you’d think they were getting paid by its competitors…Oh wait, they are. I love the news from this site, but at least try and hide who pays your bills.

    • SteveBerman

So what if they have Verizon banners up and down their site… I’m sure that has no impact on them at all!

  • ipheezy

Eh, I doubt this feture will be enabled anytime soon. AT&T would have already allowed this if they had the network. They’re facing two problems.
1st off, the network. Too many users in some areas.
2 they have not found a way to know if your tethering or not.
They are promising to make huge network upgrades by the end of this year but… Well we’ll see.

  • http://www.nuacco.net/resources traffic

Mobile phone is much better that iphone. I have heard some bad feedback regarding the iphone.

Don’t blame AT&T blame the iphone manufacturer.

  • http://xxdesmusxx.net xxdesmus

Wow, well done Apple/AT&T. Only 5-6 years late to the party on this feature.

Well done guys — you certainly innovated the crap out of this feature.

    • Scott

The iPhone hasn’t even been out that long dum-dum!

      • http://xxdesmusxx.net xxdesmus

The point was that OTHER phones have had tethering for 5-6 years now. The iPhone is still just playing catch-up.

  • the truth

haha.. all of you are funny.. i did this for the longest time with my iphone on 3.2!!! dont see what the big deal is!! plus i know of plenty of people that still do it and it affects the network non that i know off.. still strong..

    • Robert

You did it on 3.2 huh. That’s impressive since 3.1.3 is the newest software.

  • the truth

oh yea, if you have a phone with the same capabilities on any network and there will be data issues.. biased consumers will tell you its the phone never the network.. so if the iphone does walk to a different provider expect changes in signal strength (not coverage)… you can cover the whole world but if your signal is not strong enough to supply all customers…

  • TWT

First-Stop all the nerdnosh! I work with the average everyday joe (professors), not fan boys, and they are delighted for tethering, iPads, new iPhones etc…So, you are not the market! Sorry, not everyone is out there playing MMO’s-watching latest comic book videos- or occasionally girly content on their phones. ALL large companies suck. Yes, ATT-Verizon-Tmobile (nazi), and all the others. They are out to make big money. Stop the hate, no one is listening. Oh, and be grateful your mom is still paying for your phone.

  • jonathan

I personally haven’t seen a lot of folks tethering their phones to their laptops. that’s for a few select group of people, on the road business individuals or extreme hobbyist perhaps. I don’t think it will affect the network that much.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

  • Greg Gebhardt

iPhones are not great for RF capability. Maybe the new iPhone will get better reception. Blackbbery RULES!

  • http://zevkli.in zevkli in

Yup. I’m all for giving it a shot on Verizon. They are the only carrier I personally haven’t had my number on and suppose its worth a shot. :)
