GV Mobile 2.0 first look

Exclusive

GV-Mobile-2-3

It’s pretty simple: Apple’s iPhone OS is basically the only major smartphone operating system without an official or unofficial Google Voice client. We used to have GV Mobile and VoiceCentral, but as we all know, those were abruptly removed from the App Store and even Google’s official client was turned away. Well, at least Apple didn’t Amazon your iPhone and take away the Google Voice applications you already bought/downloaded, right? They might as well have as GV Mobile was rendered useless after a Google Voice-side update, and with no way of updating existing user’s applications, anyone who had been a GV Mobile user up until that point in time was out of luck.

GV Mobile is now available for jailbroken iPhone devices for free, but there’s something better coming up… GV Mobile 2.0. We’re really excited to tell you about it, too. It has been polished and refined — it had an injection of features — and we love using it, even in its non-final and beta form. For starters, dialed calls connect almost instantly, your iPhone contacts and favorites are accessible right within the app, there’s voicemail transcription viewing, and even multiple Google Voice account support. Advanced features like call forwarding phones, do not disturb settings as well automatic syncing, and even Growl support are on the to-do list, but for now, we’re just happy to have GV Mobile back on our non-jailbroken iPhone. Hopefully Apple reverses course and lets this version through their pearly gates when it is finished, though we wouldn’t bet the farm on it. Couple application shots after the break!

Super shout out to Sean Kovacs for hooking us up!

  • Bustafone

I have the older version in my iPhone and I haven’t use it once.

this is cool, but no one has google voice because its invite only and only geeks/nerds/tools have it right now

    • Chris

You’re an idiot. The invitation is sent within a week.

    • smallfrys

His username is “T dot,” so he’s probably from Toronto, Canada. He’s just bitter because it’s not available to Canadians because Canada is an afterthought and doesn’t matter to US developers.

  • HBB

lol, if any one need google voice invite i will send one to them

    • kona

Hey man, please hit me up with an invite.

  • YB

Wait a minute, in the beginning of the last paragraph, it says it’s available for jailbroken iPhones. Then towards the end, it says “we’re just happy to have GV Mobile back on our non-jailbroken iPhone.”

    I’m confused. Clarification, please :)

    • evilmunkeh

He’s stating that the GV 2.0 will be available officially for all iPhone owners since Apple will be approving it.

      • http://www.bgr.com Boy Genius

Nope. This was an ad-hoc version for the beta, so no jailbreaking was required. GV Mobile 2.0 will be available for sale on Cydia for jailbroken iPhones when it is finished, and hopefully in a perfect world the App Store as well.

      • YB

Thanks for clearing that up. I doubt Apple will approve it, but who knows, with the VoiceCentral web app coming soon, they just might! :)

Voice Central is Google Voice isn’t it? Either way it will be nice to one day tell your carrier to say “No, thank you!” To the high pricing. Although they will probably just jack up data plan pricing.

      • http://crackberry.com Patrick Moto Droid

Nevermind about the Voice Central comment, not an iPhone user here, thought it was Google, I see it is a GV client. Peace.

      • ben

there is no way you can tell what Apple will or will not approve. That is part of the joy of Apple.

I’m interested to know more on the nexus and how this will be released especially data plans. seems we do not need minute anymore and we should only pay for data plans

@Evilmunkeh: No he didn’t. He said he hopes Apple changes course and let’s this new version through. No word on of this will be available officially in the app store. He also says he wouldn’t bet the farm on it.

Apples never gonna approve this. The voip issues notwithstanding Anything that works better than a native app they come up with some bullshit reason to reject it.

    • Jeff

      “voip issues aside”

how many times do people need to stress this… Google Voice is not a VOIP application and has ZERO to do with VOIP at this time…

      *shakes head*

Apple has to approve it since Google will release Nexus One soon. I have been waiting to see the fight between Apple and Google.

  • http://crackberry.com Patrick Moto Droid

Been using Google Voice for a while now and when I got my Droid, after the first week I dropped my Voice plan on VZW to minimum and dropped my text all together (free with GV). Love this service from Google. Voice recognition is eerily good, for voicemail. If you know someone with Gmail or GV have them send you an invite. It seems that if things develop with LTE the way Google expects, we should all switch over to GV (because at some point, all calls will probably switch to data anyway), only thing is…don;t tell your carrier, they probably wont like it much. As far as Apple is concerned, why should they care, you are still using their device?

    • http://fisor.com/ mk

When Google Nexus One comes out, it will have Google Voice for sure. When people realize how good Google Voice is, many will buy and use Nexus One. That’s why Apple and AT&T care.
Droid is CDMA, so AT&T’s market is not impacted much by Droid.

      • http://crackberry.com Patrick Moto Droid

You are correct. I was only using my Droid experience as a reference to GV, not any impact it has or doesn’t have on any other carriers. But still GV is pretty awesome.

  • Tron

Any chance of GV mobile having push notification so that I don’t have to use PushGMail to alert me when I have a SMS in Google Voice?

    • joey

you can have your sms alert you via email. you can then reply to the email to return the sms.

  • bizguy

iPhone only? where’s the blackberry & android love? neither of those platforms shit on GV before; so, let’s get some privileges.

    wtf?

  • tome

I have been using Google Voice on my iPhone with the app iEC5xx. This is a $7app but works great for saving my minutes. I have a basic family plan that allows me to us A List and I put my GV # on that list. Many drawbacks but the new GV app would remove them.
