Solid state drives (SSD) make for wonderful additions to any computer. Doing something as simple as replacing a regular hard disk drive (HDD) with an SSD will get you a massive return when it comes to speediness and performance. Flash-based SSD memory is significantly faster than HDDs and can revive old computers regardless of operating system. It’s probably safe to say that once you go SSD, you’ll never look back.
As fast as SSDs already are they’re about to get a whole lot faster when Seagate releases the fastest-ever SSD this summer. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to buy one even after they’re released.

It’s not because an SSD is more expensive than an HDD, as prices have been dropping in recent years. But Seagate’s new toy won’t be available to consumers, at least not initially. The drive will move data at speeds of up to 10GB per second, which sounds very impressive considering that the fastest SSD speeds recorded so far topped out at 5.5GB per second.
Seagate’s super speedy SSD drive will be used to transfer data between servers and will be marketed to data centers for the time being. Naturally, if you can get your hands on one of these babies, you’ll be able to use it on your computer of choice. The tech works with any system that supports NVMe protocol, and Seagate will have two models in store, a 16-lane PCIe unit and an eight-lane PCIe model – the latter’s top speed is of “just” 6.7GB per second.
Pricing details for either model have not been announced, though don’t expect either of them to be as affordable as slower SSD solutions.
