Bloombergis now reporting
that Tesla has received more than 325,000 reservations for the Model 3, which is obviously fantastic news for the upstart car company. There’s a downside, however: Right now, it doesn’t have close to the production capabilities to handle this amazing demand. That doesn’t mean you should hold off on reserving the car because Tesla now says that it’s “increasing our production plans to minimize the wait for Model 3.”

Although the first deliveries of the Model 3 are due to start arriving in 2017, most people who reserve the car likely won’t get theirs until 2018 or later given the unprecedented demand. The company isn’t offering any details about just how much it’s ramping up its production capabilities, so we have no idea yet just how much this will improve waiting times for people who didn’t order their car on the first day of availability.
As Electrek notes, it’s very important for Tesla to ramp up production to help its customers in the U.S. take advantage of a $7,500 tax incentive. You see, once Tesla sells over 200,000 vehicles to customers in the United States, this tax credit will drop down to $3,750 for the next six months and then $1,875 for the next six months after that. Since Tesla will likely pass this threshold in 2018, it would really help people who reserved their Model 3s to get their cars before then.
Still, this is a very good problem to have and rival car manufacturers can only look on in envy at the amount of hype Tesla has been able to generate for its Model 3.
