Twice as many consumers in the U.S. purchased Android smartphones compared to Apple’s iPhone over the past three months, according to new data just released by The Nielsen Company. The market research firm found that of those consumers who purchased a new smartphone during the three-month period ending in August, 58% purchased an Android device while 28% purchased either the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 3GS. Only 9% purchased a new BlackBerry smartphone, though the time period covered by Nielsen’s survey ended prior to the release of RIM’s new BlackBerry 7 handsets. Read on for more.

In terms of smartphone platform market share as of the month of August, Nielsen shows that 43% of smartphone owners had an Android device, 28% had an iOS smartphone and 18% owned a BlackBerry. Looking forward to the fourth quarter, however, Nielsen sees a big swing coming for iOS as Apple readies its next-generation iPhone 5. “Every time Apple launches a new iPhone or makes it available on a new wireless carrier, there is an increase in their sales,” Don Kellogg, Director of Telecom Research & Insights at Nielsen, wrote on the Nielsen’s blog. Smartphone owners made up 43% of the U.S. cell phone market in August according to Nielsen. A second chart from Nielsen’s report follows below.

All of these types of analysts forget key factors: Price points of the smartphones, number of models available for each OS, capabilities of each model …

Take these factors into account and IOS/Apple more than blows all competitors out of the water. I wonder how pitiful the % is more the closest competitor is based on a single model? Guaranteed to be pathetic, pitiful and a joke in comparison.

And I am not an “apple fanboi”. I just find it funny how the anti Apple crowd can ignore truth in favor of anything that they think backs up their irrational hatred of Apple.

The numbers do confirm one thing most people can agree on. Windows mobile is garbage and almost no one except corporate IT drones and people dependent on them want it.

but you see that’s the thing you can’t have it both ways when the numbers don’t go your way.   iPhans can’t shout out how great there are because the single model iPhone is the best selling single model of any phone when there is only one phone to choose from if you want iOS.   If you want Android you have all sorts of different styles, sizes and specs so the wealth is spread out more.

Good point, but have little doubt – if Apple expanded their line they would capture even more OS share. The study I would like to see is OS share per model and manufacturer.

How many more stats of the mass adoption of Android has to be thrown in your face, Geller, before the world finally gets a friggin’ BGR app for Android?
