Windows Phone Marketplace now home to more than 30,000 apps

mobile

The Windows Marketplace for Mobile is now home to more than 30,000 applications according to app tracking website WindowsPhoneAppList. On July 2nd, the Windows Marketplace for Microsoft’s Windows Phones passed the 25,000 milestone. By comparison, Apple’s iTunes App Store is populated with more than 500,000 applications and Google confirmed in May that the Android Market has more than 200,000 apps. The Windows Marketplace’s paid app list is loaded with games — as it should be considering the great Xbox Live integrations — and the top-five paid apps are Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, Need for Speed Unleashed and Cro-Mag Rally.

In before the haters wanna talk about how its STILL not enough

    Look
all that matters are the major apps and 1st party titles, if you cant
find the apps you need in 30k then you have a personal problem

If mainstream is ok with you, that’s fine. But I find that some of the best apps are the small ones that aren’t well known. Android has applications to suit every niche and thats all I need sometimes. I will download an application just because the font on the clock widget matches my theme.
iOS is more like WP7 because you can’t really customize, but it still serves every market.
I’m not a hater of the WP7 store, but when you say we have problems because mainstream apps is all we need, then you need to stop posting MS fanboy.

But Sarahhopkin, how come YOU want us to know so badly? What’s in it for YOU that I should visit this website?

      • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

That is the problem with DROID OS. Many of the “apps” are actually widgets or themes for apps. How does that even count??

    • http://scobleizer.com Scobleizer

Really? There’s lots of apps that are work specific. Or, for your favorite bank. Or your favorite conference. Or your favorite shopping mall. Etc.

If you only go for the major apps you are no where near going deep enough.

Im not saying that there should be a huge selection of apps that have their niche, but I keep hearing people say that because Windows Phone does have the 100,000+ app selection of Android and iOS that the platform is somehow doomed

If you don’t know how to use a website and require something to be an “app” then I can see how this is serious problem. But for those of us who are familiar with the internet it’s not a big deal.

Now just add 200k flashlight apps, 100k fart apps and I could start considering WP7..

Do they have Skype or Viber?

    Case closed.

    • Anonymous

Never heard of Viber, but Skype is available through IM+ and a dedicated (official) app is coming with Mango.

      Case has never been closed.

    • Anonymous

Since Microsoft now owns Skype, how do you think that going to work out for the other platforms? That should be your question

      • Bullet Tooth Tony

Probably pretty good, since Skype is a revenue generating property… in fact, I wouldn’t consider it a question at all.

More apps than users .. Now thats a first :)

  • empathy

you know most these apps are malicious or are dirty..

I’d rather have app which has no viruses…

The operating system as it stands right now, sucks.  MS still has a long road ahead if it wants to reach some sort of parity with Android or iOS.

    • ihateyou

      You suck…

I used to have an iPhone 3GS. After six month, I ditched it for a Nexus One. This I have enjoyed a lot. But recently I had the opportunity to play with my daughter´s HTC Trophy (WP7). Let me tell you that it impressed me a lot. It is very swift and elegant, much better than my experience with iOS and Android.  The UI is not boring like IOS with a bunch of icons on the screen. When Mango´s phones are released they should a hit, I sure going to get one. MS is doing a good job here.

I went through Windows Marketplace and found all the apps I really need. I don´t need 500,000 apps, just the necessary to use fully the phone.

      • Anonymous

I purchased a Trophy unlocked to try out the OS – ported Mango on it and love it.  HOWEVER, there is a lack of  applications such as NFL applications – which is highly relevant for me and millions of others right now.  There is no Yahoo Football application (iPhone and Android), no DirecTV Sunday Ticket To-Go app (iPhone, Android, and even BlackBerry – seriously), and no NFL Live application (all platforms).

Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t dealbreakers for me because I do love the fluidity of the OS. But unless WP7 gets the mainstream appeal that the iPhone and Android has, there will always be a severe lack of applications.  I sincerely hope it succeeds and grows because I would love to buy the latest generation of WP7 in the next few months.

For TV on the go, do yourself a favor and save some money by investing in a slingbox.

      • Anonymous

I’m glad you found the HTC Trophy to be useful and worthwhile.  Bear in mind that not everyone uses a smartphone the same way as you.  The more apps a platform has, the greater the chance that there will be an app that caters to a special interest or hobby that you have.  That’s the real advantage of having a big app store.

    • Anonymous

Have you actually used it? I don’t see how anyone could say that it sucks if they’ve actually tried it.

      • Anonymous

When WP7 first came out, it was handicapped beyond usability for me.  It didn’t have cut and paste, could not connect to a hidden network, the bluetooth stack was restricted and did not support multiple memory cards.  Those features were important to me so I could not justify actually using WP7 when I knew these features were available in Android.

      • Anonymous

That makes sense. All of these missing features are now available in Mango. You should give it a shot. It does not suck.

Aside from cut and paste, your list of missing features is pretty esoteric and not something that the average user would ever run into.

  • Anonymous

Are they still counting books as app’s in the Marketplace? I bet they are.

  • Rudy

That might be more then what Blackberry has

  • Anonymous

WP7 needs more high quality games, either ports or exclusives. Very disappointed with the current selection, especially with how much they talk up the XBL features. Myself and many others (from the “data” reported) actually like to spend time with casual games on phones.

At this point, all OS’s have the basic apps down, things like games and entertainment apps that people use for a week then forget about are what draw the crowds. I know someone that just had to get a smartphone after seeing the Talking Tom Cat app, not that they use it anymore, but that’s what hooks the average (non-geek) user. How many people bought a smartphone to play Angry Birds or Words with Friends after seeing someone playing them? Some of these are must haves now a days, where is Pandora at?

  • Anonymous

Well, 30000 great apps is better than a million sucky ones.  Hey BGR – how about reviewing some of them – can a normal nerd get along with a WP7 phone these days?

Samsung Bada OS Outsells Wp7 :)

  • Ravirajkande
