Viber for iPhone gets free text messaging

mobile

Viber, the popular iPhone application that allows for free calling to other Viber users, has been updated to version 2.0.1. After applying the update, Viber users will be able to send and receive free text messages to one another, complete with notifications. Viber has also been updated with a number of UI changes — the favorites have been moved, the calling mechanism has been improved and now shows the current state of any Viber call, and the application now has a deactivation feature. The update is available in iTunes now.

How is this app any different from about a dozen other apps that allow totally free text messaging?

    • Andy

Because it allows voice calling too….

And because this site was paid to advertise this.

    LOL!

Who needs this worthless app when you have an Android phone with Google Voice + Free Texting. This app is horrid. I tried it on my iPhone and its integration with the address book was piss poor.

    Hi,

This is a member of the Viber Development Team.
Thanks for the article and for your comments.

I’d like to mention that Viber is also coming to Android, and that should happen within a month or a month and a half.
If you have any other questions regarding the application, please feel free to ask.

    Thank you,
    Viber.

I’m not too up to date on this type of stuff…why should I choose this over Google Voice?

      • http://www.viber.com Viber

Well, I’m not here to promote Viber, but I can tell you that Viber is unique in a sense that it doesn’t require a username/password login process, it is very low on bandwidth usage AND power usage, and it can also run while Viber itself is shut off (even though it is not recommended).

Also – your real-life phone number is your Viber number, so in case a friend wants to call you, he simply calls your ‘regular’, familiar number through Viber.

Try it out, and you’ll see if it’s different and if it’s suits you :)

        Viber.

    Sweet.

Hey Viber, what about Blackberrys? Any word on that or more specifically the Playbook?

    • http://www.viber.com Viber

Blackberry is a device that’s much more technologically complex than iPhone or Android OS (simply because it doesn’t usually support VoIP).
Though it is on our list of development, it will take a while, and we don’t have release dates yet.

Sooner releases are Android (about a month or two) and Viber-for-PC and Mac.
