Sprint integrates Google Voice; effortless calling, texting for Sprint users

General

Now this, is awesome. Sprint and Google have just announced that they have worked together to give practically all Sprint wireless subscribers the ability to start using Google Voice immediately without any effort. It will literally be as simple as entering your number into your Google Voice account; the system will recognize that it’s a Sprint number and ask you if you’d like to use it as your Google Voice number. The best part? Google Voice apps aren’t needed anymore, and this works with practically any phone and OS. Android, BlackBerry, feature phones — it doesn’t matter. Any calls or text messages you send from your phone will appear in your Google Voice account, and you’ll be able to place calls or send texts from your Google Voice account online as well. What’s even cooler is that when you make international calls, it will automatically use Google Voice, thus affording deep discounts compared to standard international calling.

    That is pretty cool…

Most people don’t know the true benefits of Google Voice. It’s beyond amazing. If you have the Google Voice extension for Chrome it gets even better.

That IS truly awesome. I’ve been wanting to try Google Voice for some time now, but didn’t want to go through the hassles, but this makes it too easy.

Damn, Sprint is ahead of the game. For now.

I am positive Google knew about the T-Mobile & AT&T deal a while ago, which is why they are releasing the Nexus S 4G for Sprint and integrating GV so heavily into the network’s devices.

Sprint and T-Mobile were the only two consumer-oriented carriers, so let’s see if Google and Android can ensure Sprint’s survival amidst the sea of Red and Blue. Once Sprint starts building out their LTE network, I may be jumping ship from VZW after a customer for over a decade.

GV has been the only reason I’ve stuck with Android. The integration into the handset is great, and the service hasn’t failed me yet.

Now, if they would only enable email-to-text and SMS, then I could move back to the only phone I’ve ever truly loved- the Palm Pre (with it’s lousy hardware and weak battery life).

They also need MMS. I hope they are working on it.

That was a typo- I meant SMS. I guess that should indicate how often I use it.

So wait, I’m confused. Is this porting your Google Voice number to your phone? Does it take over your phone’s number? Or will it simply make the phone a line that rings regardless of what numbers you tell GV to forward to?

Hopefully Google will ruin AT&T-Mobile’s GSM monopoly by jumping into the mobile industry.

This is a game changer for the US phone carrier industry.

Got admire GV and Sprints balls for going for this. You guys pay through the nose for your contracts compared to us Europeans.

It’s not really that ballsy by Sprint. They give you unlimited texts for free, and they hype their 450 minute plan like it’s unlimited minutes (when comparing it to other carriers’ unlimited plans). Now, with Google voice integration, it truly is.

I don’t buy it. GV poses a threat to Sprint’s revenue, why would they do this? I bet it will be a different version of GV that Sprint can piggy back off the voice and maybe text for revenue but it definately won’t be free.

… as Google prepares to buy Sprint

That would be CRAAAZYYY!!! I’m all for it as long as Google would still allow other platforms on the network, not just Android

  • serpentor

Sprint, I wub you so much for this.

Hmm not available on my GV account yet, but this is awesome!

Oh sweet baby Jesus, I’m doing this right now!

  • BikarBatlan

    So what about sending MMS?
Do things still go out under my Sprint number or is everything under GV?
