comScore, Nielsen proclaim Android as U.S.’s most popular smartphone operating system

Android has already assumed its position on top of the global smartphone totem pole, and now, according to two separate analytics firm, it has seized the top spot in the United States as well. In separate reports filed this week, both comScore and Nielsen agree, the little green alien reigns supreme Stateside. comScore gives Android 31.2% of U.S. market share, followed by Research In Motion with 30.4% and Apple with 24.7%. Nielsen reports similar number, with Android claiming 29% of the pie with Research In Motion and Apple each sharing 27%. All hail your new mobile operating system overlord, Android!

Considering iPhone was exclusive to AT&T the whole year, the stagnant growth is not surprising. I’ll be curious to see how much the share changes, if at all, now that its on Verizon too. I suspect it will go up a bit (less than 10%) and Android will continue to gain and expand it’s lead.

I cannot wait for the next iPhone to have the same magnetic sleep/wake feature recently demonstrated for the iPad2. Funny thing is that my old Blackberry phone from 2004 has had this feature all along. Wow!–this is what I call really innovative Apple (yes– a bit of sarcasm) . A magnetic cover that puts your hardware in sleep/wake mode. It is no surprise that Android is the market leader. As Steve Jobs said “2011 is the year of the copycat.” Perhaps he was looking at himself in the mirror. Go RIM!

People want choice and the numbers prove it.

No, bring on more android tablets. These things are pretty great.

Are you all blind? The graph clearly shows Android did not eat into Apple’s share.

Look again Android passed Apple….look at the left side of the graph…not the right side.

        Oops reverse that my bad.

The one thing that I would like to see is a representation of what % RIM has for business. Why because that would reflect a lack of personal choice.

His point is that Apple is maintaining, while others are losing marketshare. Apple had 25% of the market and still does. And that’s 25% of a market that has increased in size by over 20 million subscribers. If you told me in January 2010 that I had 25% of a 42 million user market, I’d be happy. If you came back a year later and told me I had 25% of a 63 million user market, I’d be happier.

Apple is growing in userbase, even if that userbase is a steady percentage of a market that’s growing as a whole. It’s RIM and Microsoft who are actually decreasing in users. I think that’s what he means.

That being said, that doesn’t mean this isn’t cause for Apple to be concerned. Apple isn’t exactly resting on their laurels, but they’re facing some pretty fierce competition on all sides, and one of those sides is casting a great big, and growing shadow, on their turf.

I believe Android will be to smartphones as Windows is to PCs within a couple years: completely ubiquitous, with a few small players fighting for the minor leftover scraps.

To lose faith in humanity, read these comments. I’d use the word ‘thoughts’ instead of ‘comments’ but that would be a misnomer.

I for one welcome out new Android overlords.

hmmm one OS (sold on every carrier, multiple BOGO deals, multiple manufacturers, cheap alternatives, featuring mostly low grade products) versus one phone (now sold on 2 carriers)… yeah that makes sense. Nokia and WP7 will throw a dent into these stats by the end of the year, because as much I dislike Windows (Linux baby!), their mobile OS is great and unlike android, they have STANDARDS for their manufacturers and have less spyware and malware in their OS. Cheers to WP7!! Thanks iOS, let the heavyweights step in.

    Openess and Freedom FTW

Is something that you only get with Android and Microsoft Windows systems now, not with Apple. Was what I meant to say.

    • MulleBulle

God what a Klutz. Meant to type Openess and Freedom FTW, and that’s where Microsoft appear to be heading. Good on them.
