NPD: Apple computer sales up 20% in January, iPod sales down 10%

Retail

Apple watcher Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray on Tuesday revealed NPD Group data showing estimated Apple computer shipments in the U.S. for the first month of the company’s 2011 fiscal year. According to NPD Group’s numbers, Mac sales were up 20% year-over-year in January and shipments are on pace to reach 3.6 million units in the quarter. Wall Street is expecting global Mac sales to grow 22% year-over-year, and Munster believes Apple will meet expectations. Conversely, NPD shows that U.S. iPod sales declined 10% in January compared to the same month last year. Apple is expected to unveil a refreshed MacBook Pro line very soon, and strong demand for its popular MacBook Air laptop line should result in strong sales for the remainder of the quarter.

i see the ipod thing…i only see the point when you have a 14 year old and don’t want them to get a smartphone…but overall people are using their smartphones as ipods…

I’ve never seen a single person with a Macintosh Computer.

Ditto! I see people with Google computers. Not ONE person with ANY Apple products AT ALL. You are so right. You are, dear sire, a GREAT Goofan (aka Apple Hater) and as such make me very proud to be one too. We have such insights into the psyche of people as consumers it’s not even funny!

Ho hum, more Apple news from BGR…. Seriously why no reporting on Sony, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, et al’s January sales? Oh right this is BGR we are talking about…

If you’re so unhappy with what BGR reports on….find another tech website. I tend to stay away from things that cause me grief.

Unless Apple can come out with an innovative new iPod, I don’t see how they survive as a company. You must remember that the last decade, Apple was built upon the iPod halo, and without it, there’s no way they can go on. Sad times.

Apple now sells 4 million iPhones a month…

And each one of those brings them $300 in *profit*

I know you’re trying to be funny… but rest assured… Apple is in no danger…

Ya your right. There the second most profitable company in the world behind exxon-mobile. Apple is valued at $265.8 billion dollars. Yes they are in alot of trouble. Shut it down. Stupid people.

Never seen a single person with a mac computer? wow just wow. Come by my house ill show ya 5 of them. I hate when haters lie to just lie. And the ipod touch was not innovative at all. Just so ya know ipod touch is not technically included with the nano shuffle and classic line.

I love your icon/avatar. Shows how’s an apple fanboy got so insecured with the android. Rest assured the android will not kill the iPhone. And the android really, basing on real facts, is growing exponentially.

No insercurities here about android been there done it. Had the evo for a week worst phone I ever had. It was slow, laggy, had a 4 hr battery life, not getting the newer update. The software sucks and google is not behind it as much as you people think. Can’t understand for the life of me why people like it. And i’ve been in computers for 15 years.

Good one. You must be one of many I’ve come across that want a Mac so bad. But lol well you know why you can’t have one I don’t have to tell you.
Sent from my 27″ iMac i7 lol

      • Anonymous

Why can’t I have one again? Remember, jokes are only funny if they make sense. It’s okay, you’ll catch on.

Oh and BTW, I went and customized an iMac online to see if it could come close to my custom-built desktop with an i7. Turns out it can!…for $9,500. But, who am I kidding. A Mac would run half-life much better than a windows-based machine. Oh wait…right, the whole Windows handles graphics processing better than OSX thing. Must have slipped my mind.

But i’m sure you know that. Anyone who shells out as much money for a computer as you did has to know SOMEthing about them right?…..

What the hell iMac are you looking at lol. Mine was $2000. $9500?. Even the most expensive Mac is not that much. Another jealous I can’t have a apple boy. Go reboot your computer load up your antivirus.

      • Anonymous

lol you know even less about computers than I thought if you can’t customize on an online system. I can make a mac cost 22 grand online. FAIL.
