Exclusive: BlackBerry Storm 3 shows up, tells all

Exclusive

You thought we were done revealing RIM’s 2011 BlackBerry lineup? Not quite yet. In addition to the new BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve, and BlackBerry Torch 2, we have received photos and information about the BlackBerry Storm 3. The specifications on the Storm 3 are pretty impressive and will definitely position this Storm sequel nicely among other top-of-market handsets. It also will feature the highest resolution display to ever ship on a BlackBerry smartphone — a 800 x 480-pixel display and yes, it will have an optical trackpad (though we’re not sure why). Here is the thing, it’s entirely possible RIM will change the Storm branding on the device — codenames are Monaco and Monza for the global devices — we’ll have to wait and see. We have all the specs after the break!

  • 1.2GHz processor
  • 3.7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • Tri-band UMTS/HSPA
  • 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording
  • 8GB eMMC (storage for apps and data), 512MB of RAM
  • microSD slot
  • Magnetometer
  • Proximity sensor
  • Accelerometer
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • 2.4GHz b/g/n and 5GHz a/n Wi-Fi + UMA
  • 3G Mobile hotspot
  • Optical trackpad
  • 1230 mAh battery
  • BlackBerry OS 6.1
  • OpenGL ES 2.0

The BlackBerry Storm 3 looks good for a release around September of this year, and from what we have been told, the Storm 3 will launch in two or possibly three versions globally.

Is a same person with multipel handles posting here? What’s this “…I am a big BB user but I’m going to get an Android or an iPhone…” or “…released in September? Geez, I guess I have to get an Android or an iPhone…” Please , be my guest and get yourself an Android or an iPhone. N O B O D Y cares. Now, if you said, “I goning to become a medical doctor so I can serve mandkind,” I would be impressed.

No, this device will not be competitive in September as far as specifications, or in term of OS, RIM is in a holding pattern OS wise until their new QNX OS is smartphone capable.

For the RIM haters, they thrive off of security and reliability, not necessarily being on the bleeding edge in terms of hardware, which honestly isn’t a terrible thing, except they seem to try and convince us that they have reinvented the wheel whenever they release something that is behind the curve.

For the RIM lovers, you like to make comments about business ability of these phones, the keyboards, e-mail, etc… what you forget is that they are also trying to gain market share in the consumer market, as well as the corporate. It’s the consumer market where they are falling down compared to the competition. The iPhone and Android models are acceptable alternatives for business users, especially recently; RIM remains the top corporate dog, but alternatives are improving, and they are doing so much more quickly. That advantage can only last for so long, the real question is. Why can’t RIM release a phone that is technologically relevant? Are they the last company that gets told about all the nifty new gadgets and tech that is coming out? Resting on your laurels is a great way to get your ass kicked.

Never again RIM!!! After that horrible abomination the Storm 1, you really think someone is gonna waste an upgrade to deal with that crap O.S. for another 1-2 years??? The mandatory battery pull everyday, the penny behind the battery door to get the stupid surepress to work right, and the 3 minute boot time are just a few of the many reasons why I will never buy another BB device!!! /rant

What makes bothers me most about RIM is that they have money to throw to make a beastly device that can possibly be homerun if they just made 1 or 2 devices. BB is a house hold name. QNX, while it does mimic web os, looks awesome and is leaps and bounds better than previous OS. If they were to take the best of what android/ios has to offer and keeping what has made BB so good thus far, there is no reason why they shouldnt be number one.

My idea for the perfect BB
Integrate QNX with the best BBOS has to offer(email/messaging comes to mind)
1 touch device and one keyboard device (we dont need a torch/bold/curve etc…)
pushed to every carrier asap (this is why android picked up all that market share in a short time)
High end hardware( Make the other guys play catch up. It would be nice to have my bb as my work and my play phone. Most people with bbs that use android/ios devices as personal phones would gladly just use the BB if it did everything the other phones did.)

Blackberry’s a household name already. If they get into the consumer side of things again, they have the opportunity to be awesome. To do that, RIM needs to step up and put all the R&D behind a touchscreen device and keyboard device and just stick with it. They got the OS. They just need to put that behind the most powerful mobile hardware out there. They do that, the developers will come most definitely the consumer.

    For what carrier?!!!!!

What is screwed up is I really would have enjoyed owning this device had it come out in the middle of last year. Even if it were to be available right now…but September?? That is just way too late.

RIM is really losing their way.

RIM is good.. at email. Their camera’s are horrible, web browsing is slow, they lack any good media apps…if Android can get push email down with servers other than Gmail, they got this in the bag. The Storm 3 being released in September 2011 with specs that would have been impressive June 2010 isn’t gonna help RIMs cause. Just roll over already…

This Storm looks awesome. It will do well with the TAT group working on it’s UI and QNX under the hood.

Oh poor rim releasing a 2009 spec phone near.the end of 2011. You just don’t get it do you.

Storm 3 will be released September this year? By that time we will have the IPhone 5, the EVO 2 and many others. Why Blackberry felt so far behind the competition?
