Gene Munster: Mac sales up 37% year-over-year this quarter, iPod sales stagnant

General

mac-mini-2010

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has published a report stating that sales of Apple’s Macintosh computers are up 37% year-over-year for the current quarter. Munster goes onto hypothesis that iPad sales are not in-fact cannibalizing Mac sales as some analysts had initially predicted. Also of interest: iPod sales appear to be stagnant (or soft as the Business Insider put it), with a forecast of around 10 million units for 2010 which is on par with the Street’s expectations, but shows no growth from FY 2009. It seems as though the iPod business, which carried Apple across the financial finish line for many years, is now taking a backseat to the Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

Great sales figures for Apple. I can kinda understand the iPod lull. There are so many used iPods available that it seems silly to buy a new one. I have a 1G iPod Touch that was purchased used. Works great. Now I I have an iPhone it has been passed on to the kids.

    I have a 2nd G 10GB ipod, a 5th G 40GB ipod, a 1st G 1G iPod shuffle and they all still work fine. But now I mostly us my iPhone as an iPod.

    • @neidlinger.

due to the lack of calls and data?

      • RJB

I live in London and O2 are my provider. I have never had a problem with a lack of calls or data. No dropped calls, 3G nearly all the time.

I foresee a camera and retina display and what not coming to iPod Touch in September but I can’t figure out what they could possibly add to the iPod nano. It already has like… everything that could be fit into it.

What are they talking about? iPod sales are not “soft”.
They just sold over a million in 1 day a couple weeks ago.

Ohhhh yeah, the iPhone 4 was SUPPOSED to make calls too. My bad.

    • George

It does make phone calls, duh. You just have to suspend it in mid air to get good reception.

        hahaha oh yeah my bad.

I don’t know why haters keep insisting the iphone4 can’t do calls, when I have been making calls on it since I got it on launch day. Yes, there is the antenna issue which is remedied with not touching the small gap or simply using a case. Other than that, there has been no issues for me. I will admit that apple did mess up on the antenna design, but insisting that you can’t make calls on it is ridiculous. So far I’ve made more than a hundred calls on it and only dropped a call once. In fact, I’m getting reception where there wasn’t one before. Most posts whether its the phone or not is usually something that folks are complaining about, rarely do people post positive comments when their phones are working well. It does give the illusion that all Iphones or whatever is flawed. Us geeks that comment on here are really just a small minority compared to the outside. I never make a decision based on what people say here, rather, I make it on user experience and testing it out myself. I know the haters will downrank me on this, but I’m simply being honest. I also like android, but for now the iphone 4 suits me. Yes AT&T is crappy, oversaturated and can’t wait for the Iphone to go to Verizon or some other network.

For a quick sec, I thought Gene Munster was someone from the Addams family.

    • Jay Hovah

He would be from the “Munster’s” not the Addams family!

Apple is going out of business. Horrible numbers. Jobs and co should get in line at unemployment now.

Not surprising at all… At some point, the iPod will be but a tiny sales portion of Apple’s offerrings. The iPhone does what the iPod can but can make calls and get free OS updates…

    • jawman

      except it can’t make calls….

    • The Truth

What OS do you have to pay for updates? Most, if not all, offer free updates these days.

  • bob

i will never understand why anyone would pay the outrageous price of an apple computer…
stupid jewelry for people who dont know any better

If they lowered the price of the iPod Touch, I would buy it in a heart beat. It still gives you the iPhone App experience so long as you have a data connection. And believe me, whatever data connection you have will be better then AT&T.

The market is saturated with ipods and sales growth is eaten by iPhones so it’s natural that their sales slow down at some point.

I’m impressed with the sales figures on iPad though, because the way I see the device there really shouldn’t be such a huge market for it as I it really doesn’t beat iPod touch in anything but as a portable movie player.

The new Mac Mini is absolutely overpriced compared to the old one, I bought one last october and the new one is 200 euros more expensive with the only differences being HDMI and faster graphics. I can only presume that the sales on that piece of kit will go down quite hard as they didn’t bother including blueray there.

As for the laptops, the 13″ MBP is superb and priced quite competitively compared to other offerings, but if you want 15″ just about the only difference is the screen size and the price hike there is so large that I wouldn’t buy it unless I really needed the screen. Quality wise the only competition is lenovos thinkpad lineup and then it’s about whether you like OS X or not and whether you like fiddling with a clit like mouse which I enjoy or the touchpad on MBP which I like too.

I was getting impressed until I saw the source.
