AT&T gets ready for your iPad, new iPhone with micro-SIMs

If you’ve never seen a micro-SIM before, you’ll probably be pretty shocked to learn that it’s simply just a smaller SIM card… just like the name implies. What’s interesting, however, is that the SIM isn’t actually different as the chip is exactly the same, the only difference is that the plastic surrounding it is minimized. In any case, just in time for the Apple iPad 3G launch and upcoming next generation iPhone launch, AT&T stores have started receiving new SIM cards which have cutouts for both the regular SIM standard, and the new micro-SIM all in one. A pretty cleaver move, don’t you say? One more image after the break!

ALSO, I know for a fact this sim was sent out ONLY for replacing any bad sims that arrive in IPADs. Nothing to do with Iphone 4 GEN. Apple stores will have them, and so will AT&T stores. Again, ONLY for Ipad.

Apple likes to separate itself from the rest of the crowd I guess this is just another way of making that happen. Perhaps this is another way of keeping the iphone exclusive to At& T users. That’s interesting..I wonder what other phone’s will have this system. If they start using this system more, maybe it will become available to At&T pre-paid users!!!

“Perhaps this is another way of keeping the iphone exclusive to At& T users” how so? you think micro-SIM is some Apple inspired spec that only ATT and Apple are using?

The microSIM was developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute along with SCP, 3GPP (UTRAN/GERAN), 3GPP2 (CDMA2000), ARIB, GSMAssociaton (GSMA SCaG and GSMNA), GlobalPlatform, Liberty Alliance, and the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) for the purpose of fitting into devices otherwise too small for a mini-SIM card.[1][2]

The form factor was mentioned in the Dec 1998 3GPP SMG9 UMTS Working Party, which is the standards-setting body for GSM SIM cards[3], and the form factor was agreed upon in late 2003

I love the transformer behind the sim card. Soundwave was one of my favorites. Nice pics….

      damn decepticons, always so deceptive!

      • Frenzy

Can you see the Cat in the Walkman?

    • Frenzy

Hey, it’s not just Soundwave, you know? Ravage is in the pic too!

  • Jarred

and how do you know these are not for the new iphone since, last i checked, the new iphone is going to use a micro SIM.

Nice to know i will only have to trim down my Tmobile card to work …….

Now if only AT&T could get their cell system to work…

3 Italy used to have a similar design for their normal sims and it was horrendous, if you had to remove your sim more than a couple of times you were probably going to break the thing, so here’s hoping that at&t only supply these type of sims for devices that will use them as a micro sim.

The standard definition for MicroSIM pretty much dictated that they would be able to punch out from full-size and Mini-SIM. They wanted backwards compatibility.

I wonder what happens if someone who needs a full size SIM has trouble putting in the card and SNAP!! it breaks (as per the perforation for the microSIM). How will they use the SIM at that point? I know it is bound to happen.

I guess they buy one of these? http://www.microsim-shop.com/

There is even cheaper adapter on htttp://www.gomicrosim.com
no need to bother try it out
I bought one and I’am very happy.

      • Micke

The main reason why you need this adapter is because you can use the cheap data-plan provided by your mobile service provider on any device other than iPad with the help of the adapter.
I got mine from http://www.microsim2sim.com, they have it designed with an adhesive layer that keeps your microSIM firm in place at any agle. I think they are the only ones that have this model. Also, they sent me as a bonus a special sticker that i could stick to the normal SIM card and cut out microSIM with the help of the guide lines marked on the stick. Overall it’s a great stuff that will probably save me some money.

    Wait a minute…that’s no walkman!

So how would I transfer my contacts from my old sim to a new one on the iphone if I get it for AT&T I wonder? Would I have to buy it in the AT&T store for example?

Anyone notice “Cleaver” and not “Clever”?

the more I think about it, the more I want an ipad.

For the ignorant people who know nothing about Android.
I have an HTC magic and an HTC dream and on both of them I have OS v2.1 and they run very good.

People doesn’t know that Android has an internal taskkiller that well kill inactive apps that are not used often .

People also can’t compare Android with iPhone because apple has a unique marketing mentality that will do everything so u buy a new device every year vs Android is an open source that anyone could increase the performance on each device vs appel u can’t modify the software performance .

Ps the most stupid thing that I heard that there is 10 or 20 apps of each and they are all ranked 4 to 5 stars some apps has 1 * and iPhone has double amount of versions for apps

  • NobleRodhos

Screw the iPhone & iPad… I want that SoundWave on 3G!!!!

  • jedsklo

In other news….I fuck on the first date.

  • Karen

Now if AT&T just readies its NETWORK too.

  • markymark

I assume that “cleaver” is a clever play on words to describe the operation required to separate the micro-SIM from its packaging…

  • Andrew

If the iPad sim comes in a punch out card, could not the standard size be punched out and inserted in a current iPhone or other ATT phone?

This would only give the iPhone a data plan I assume – but $30 for unlimited data (via iPad sim) would make it a great pocket internet & GPS device.

  • Reginald

Guys, as far as I know, there is no need to buy two Ipad data plans! I heard there is a thing called micro sim adapter. Basically, u put ur microsim card inside it, and then u can use it in both Ipad and Iphone. I googlesearched it and found this site that sells it: gomicrosim . com They say it costs 4.5 EUR. They also seem to offer the sticker guide to cut the regular simcard into the microsim. According to my calculations it should save me 1440$, since now I have no need to sign for another 2 years plan with AT&T.
