Dell Lightning, Flash, Thunder and Smoke leak out

Dell might not currently be putting its best foot forward when it comes to smartphones, but man does it ever look to have plans when it comes to Windows Phone 7 and Android. Engadget was sent some slides of the Texas company’s Lightning, Flash and Thunder and do they ever strike our fancy. Just like nature, let’s start off with some Lightning. Running WP7, it is a vertical QWERTY slider with a 4.1″ WVGA AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, 802.11b/g/n, 8GB microSD card, 1GB ROM / 512MB RAM and 1GHz processor. Network-wise, the Lighting will be able to run on both AT&T and T-Mobile’s 3G networks with downlink speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, although unfortunately you’re going to have to choose one or the other. Then there’s the Thunder. Equipped with Android 2.1 Eclair and Dell’s social medial-friendly “Stage” UI overlay, its specs closely mirror the Lightning’s except in lieu of a full-QWERTY keypad it has an 8 megapixel camera. Throw in support for Flash 10.1 and a Hulu app and it looks like Dell has a real winner on its hands. Then again, who knows what the competition will come out with by the time it’s released in Q4 on various HSDPA networks like AT&T. Next up is the Flash. Featuring Android 2.2 “Froyo” with Stage UI, it is going to be positioned as a mid-range smartphone upon its release in 2011. It has a 3.5″ WVGA touchscreen display, a feature-packed 5 megapixel camera, support for microSD cards up to 64GB, Wi-Fi, TV-out, Bluetooth 3.0, 512MB ROM / RAM, AT&T-friendly tri-band HSPA that peaks at 14.4Mbps down all powered by an 800MHz processor. Finally there’s the Smoke. Another Froyo device and the most affordable of the bunch, the stretched-out Smoke has a 2.8″ QVGA display (likely a typo on Dell’s part), QWERTY keypad, 800MHz processor, 5 megapixel shooter, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, 14.4Mbps HSDPA and sports dual-microphones

Doesn’t the future look lovely? You can find a few of the pics after the break.

Nice. Very nice. When are they rumored to be released? Will they allow display in landscape as well?

  • sk9

All I can say is WOW Dell, you are full of surprises. Props on amazing looking devices.

  • GAG

Wow, have to feel sorry for Dell. So back to the last century.

    • A|X

      Lemme guess. Iphone user? Haha.

These devices look great. And considering they’re not running shit like the Iphone OS, it’s already ahead of Jobs.

WoW very nice!! I can’t wait new one… Lol

  • Macluvin

Nice! I use an iPhone and I’m still kinda drooling as I look at the photos and specs of these devices.
    Good Job Dell !

  • Teddy

With T-Mobile promising HSPA before the end of the year…. the Lightning will be a killer.
    It looks slick and sexy.

  • Dale McNamee

    Bravo,Dell,Bravo !

  • Ez

Who the hell uses sliders these days ? What is this matrix the movie ? And what the hell u ppl are so excited about ? Same functions and exact same features and os as 20 other phones on the market, from htc to motorola to samsung, its average at best….. so relax with the praises.

For rim its another blow, for a non- phone manufacturer to produce this phone , this just shits on rim and os 6 , id short rims stock to say the least.

Iphone still king. Perfect balance. Function. Esthetics. Apps. Quality of build. Everything is uniform and just “done right”.

Tough to beat. Def not with this

    • Mike

first of all sliding phones were always eyes catchy, second this is first touchscreen phone with full qwerty keyboard portrait sliding which is very convenient for typing while driving or using it with one hand, looks 10 times nicer than i-phone,1400mah battery beats i-phone anytime. This phone is a killer and i’m getting it as soon as it comes out, price won’t matter

      • Jon

Why are you typing while driving?

    • supertrac

Ez…I’m sure Steve Jobs gave you a good BJ. Everybody knows he likes tiny d***s like yours.

  • Macluvin

Has anyone noticed that Verizon never seems to pick up anything good?
    Motorola Droid, ugly. horrible keyboard.
Eris, already being phased out. it was a waste of time to begin with due to hardware and 1.6
Nobody wants a windows 6.5 so Imagio never sold.
    Google’s nexus never showed up.
They have the Incredible coming out. so I guess they have one good phone.

    • AndroidUser

Actually Eris has 1.5, Never got 1.6 and who knows when 2.1 will be released on it as they are most likely behind the development of Sprint is for the Hero and Moment.

    • Norm

Why don’t you rephrase that word good, to anything your little picky ass wants. Droid rocks

    • Suckers

If you think the Droid is ugly just keep it in your purse or glue some rhinestones to it, then all your non-existent friends won’t laugh… fag

  • Elway7

Not to be negative, but remember, At&t cant even get the aero out. the next bloated 1.5 yahoo phone. I hope not, but would expect the same treatment with all at&t android devices. I also dont think they will not launch anything good before the new iphone, and not for a while after the iphone. It would be nice if you could just buy one from dell soon.

    • AndroidUser

Nor can they decide to release the desire… They really should wipe their chin after meeting with Stevie boy.

  • Gusto77

    They look good, but…

2011? Really? There are better phone hardwarewise today! In 2011 there will be whole new generation of devices – new HTC phones, iPhone 5G etc. Not to mention that every HW maker and their sister will have Android phone out.

This Dilbert strip says it all:

    • lossendae

The LTE version is for 2011, the normal version will be this year.

      As the news said…

      • Gusto77

Yeah WP7 is Q4 2010, all the android phones are 2011… As the news said…

      • TenzinR

Actually only the Flash and the LTE version of the Thunder are coming out in 2011.
“Then there’s the Thunder. Equipped with Android 2.1 Eclair . . . Then again, who knows what the competition will come out with by the time it’s released in Q4 on various HSDPA networks like AT&T.”
It may sound a little confusing but read the Engadget article if you want, its explains it better.

      • Gusto77

        Ok, from engadget:

        Flash – first quarter ’11
        Lightning – Q4 2010 (LTE Q4 2011)
        Thunder – around Q4 2010 (LTE Q4 2011)
        Smoke – Q2 2011

All at least 1 year (Q4 2009) after comparable HTC phones…

      • TenzinR

Gusto: First no one was talking about whether or not they are coming out 1 year after comparable HTC phones, which they are not. The only current htc phones, that i can think of, that can compare are the HD 2 and Nrxus one and they both came out in Q1 2010 so it is not even a year. Plus the HD 2 didn’t have a carrier until recently so most people didn’t even know about it.
Lastly I was right one of Dell’s Android phone is coming out in 2010

  • NunyaBizness

    Welcome to 2005.
    FAIL !!!!!!!!!

Slide out landscape QWERTY a la Touch Pro or just don’t bother.
All of a sudden, my Touch Pro 2 is looking better and better.

  • Gauntlet Down

    Wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wait!!!

They’re supposed to be buying Palm!

  • mi_canuck

Definitely would go for the WP7… the slide qwerty being the clincher… besides… I’m sick of Android

  • Mr. Meowington

It’s like these companies have never even heard of CDMA. I used to have AT&T and it was absolutely reprehensible. I couldn’t even get service in my own apartment upstairs. Everyone enjoy these fancy new Dell bricks!

  • Tdot34

They look good…. But a little late to the party don’t you think Dell? I guess they are going to try anything to revive themselves.

I think their money would be better spent on their core business…. not the over saturated smart-phone market. These will be as big of a hit as the Garmin Phones.

    • Jay

how is it a little late if they’re going to be releasing the lightning (WP7) sometime this year when windows 7 mobile comes out.

i think it’s perfect timing. a great looking phone for a great looking new os like WP7 which is supposed to be slated for sometime this year. Your probably the guy who says it’s too little too late from m$ too huh.

maybe they were waiting to release these phones until a suitable OS came out. android is only starting to get better with 2.1 eclair

  • kevin

Wow nice! Looks like if what we just saw is apple’s next iphone then I think google is going to put the smack down on apple’s market share.

  • http://www.GiftMonkey.com/?s=176291 Carlos A.

    WOW very nice! 

  • cd.cd

Gee, and I guess the PC market isn’t as saturated as the smartphone market? This is the beginning of the ride boys, sit back and enjoy the show.

  • HEMI 922

    Lightning is amazing!!

  • Workman

Im upset that there are really no good WP7 devices slated for Verizon on CDMA.. I dont want to have to hold off on a LTE phone thats still going to be a work in progress.. Give me a WP7 Lightning with a CDMA/LTE combo chip and sign me up for pre-order!

  • Mohammad

I can’t wait for the lightning to strike. I hope tmobile will subsidize this.

  • http://www.bgr.com/2010/04/21/dell-lightning-flash-and-thunder-leak-out/comment-page-1/ Someone
