Engadget posted photos of the what was said to possibly be an early prototype / actual version of the next generation iPhone last night, and while we assumed their story was legit, we figured the unit was just totally janky and most likely a software testing mule. MacRumors now confirms that the device in question is just a Japanese knock off.

Thank. Heavens.

UPDATE: Uh oh, Engadget is now reporting that the unit is in fact most probably a new iPhone device and not a fake or clone. They’ve referred to the leaked Apple iPad photo and what appears to be the same new iPhone in the edge of the photo and a source of theirs also confirming the unit’s authenticity. We’ll see!

    If you watch the new Iron Man 2 trailer, they quickly show that same Apple device which looks to possibly be the Iphone 4g. Has 3 physical buttons, Send on left side, Menu in Middle of course, and End on right side.

    I think this is the real deal and as much as I hate to say it, it looks damn good! Apple is really worried about Android eating into its market share so a full scale redesign makes sense & was well needed. I always made fun of people for going out & spending $300 on the same device year after year just to get more memory. IF this pans out to be real, Ole Stevie has just “upped the ante” and Mr. Schmidt needs to counter it Indubitably…

      I’ve faded out selling the Iphone to customers, people buy it and they dont know why they want it or need it. actually most people who intend on coming in to purchase the iphone “from my location” are leaving with a motorola backflip or Blackberry 9700 because they finally realize all these “new” features coming on the iphone, such as multi-tasking as an example. are already integrated into these other devices. Iphone was an awsome product for applications, internet and mp3 player..but wait. Doesnt the moto backflip do all the same stuff except not completly controlled by Apple? hmm give it a try :) Apple definatly needs a change of pace and redesign the product to bring back alot of its main customer base. thats my .2 cents

    It’s really funny to read the comments on this article now that Apple has confirmed that the device in the pictures is theirs.So many people calling it an obvious fake for so many reasons. “Clearly not designed by Apple”, ah, yeah.
    Engadget had a picture of it on a desk, next to the iPad, inside Apple labs. Now Gizmodo has received a letter requesting them to return the device to Apple.
