WSJ: Verizon definitely getting the iPhone

If the Wall Street Journal is correct, AT&T’s iPhone monopoly is guaranteed to fizzle out at the end of this summer. According to people “briefed on the matter” a special CDMA version of the iPhone will be made starting this September by Pegatron Technology Corp., a subsidiary of ASUSTeK Computer Inc. To which company will this CDMA device be headed? None other than Verizon Wireless. Yeah. Holy crap. Definitely a blow to AT&T, but on the bright side, it too will be getting a new model, built once again by Hon Hai Precision Industry Co and most likely in June.

    …people here just crack me up.

    Yes Sprint has WIMAX (which will NOT be the next 4g standard), Hessee (sp?) himself admitted that LTE will have a better rollout. And VZW will almost catch up to Sprint with LTE rollout THIS YEAR with a tec that WILL BE the standard.
    Sprint plans are crazy though.

      Who cares if WIMAX is standard? CDMA is not the standard and we all know it is better than GSM.

        You seriously might want to read up on the differences between WIMAX and LTE. LTE OWNS WIMAX and it’s not even close. Things like Latency, Signal Strength, Speed (both up and down), and overall world acceptance. Why do you think the CTO from Clear Channel was saying how easy the transition from WIMAX to LTE would be (it isn’t btw) and why do you think AT&T dumped their plans for HSPA+? It’s because everyone beside a company who bleeding customers like you wouldn’t believe is being reduced to Cricket (Sprint) doesn’t have the money to pony up for the technology.

        verizon also claimed they were getting the Pre not long after sprint.

        that was less than true. i think verizon figured out they can rain on sprints parade and then be late on their promises.

        (ie: promise 4g in 2010 and when its mid 2011 when it actually rolls out, shrug their shoulders and keep going)

        I’m sure WIMAX is fine. My point is why does it matter if it is the world standard? Who gives a shit?

      WIMAX will not be *THE* next 4G standard.

      It will be *A* 4G standard. As will LTE.

      Just like CDMA isn’t *THE* current 3G standard. Nor is GSM.

    Forget the iphone….the HTC EVO is where its at. You think the new iphone will have a 4.3 inch screen and an 8MP camera?? Not a chance. Oh and Sprint’s 4g (WIMAX) will be up and running in all major markets by summer so the EVO will be running 4G out of the box with the ability to act as a wifi hotspot for up to 8 devices simultaneously. Oh yeah I also forgot about sprints $99 unlimited EVERYTHING plan!!

    I was with Verizon for 10 years but switched to Sprint to get the HTC HERO and have never looked back. Call quality and coverage is actually better with Sprint in my area and you can’t beat the price savings.

      until they go broke, which will happen. I have to admit it looks like a nice phone, and I’m sure it will be but by end of year Verizon will be the nationwide leader in 4g. Mark it down. BTW the reason your Sprint coverage is better is because of all the people leaving the company…. less traffic faster speeds.

        haha you’re probably right about the coverage. Don’t get me wrong, I love Verizon. I have just gotten used to paying a lot less for virtually the same service in my area. What would happen if Sprint went under? Would they just basically merge with Verizon?

        Verizon will put 7 Billion (with a ‘B’) into it’s network just this year alone. Can AT&T or Sprint say that? Just don’t forget, you get what you pay for. Superior coverage, speed and systems are not cheap!

    First, who in the HELL is this ‘One person’ the article keeps referencing? This could be ANYONE…I mean how credible is an unnamed source?

    Second, this ‘One person’ says it would be September before these are even being mass produced in a CDMA variant. BGR, please update your article to accurately reflect the non-committal nature of this circumstantial article. kthxbye

    WRONG! It’s China Unicoms 2010 upgrade – which runs a different version of CDMA than the US. This “rumor” has nothing to do with Verizon.

    Oh hey, remember all those rumors yesterday about a new iPhone coming out for Verizon that had everyone all excited? Well, analysts, wet blankets that they are, had to go and ruin the fun.       You’re correct! And that’s what scares are these Android (where’s my update 2.1) losers. If Apple gets one VZ, Sprint, and T-Mo, it will be a massacre! The iPhone will be the world leader of smart phones.

    Recall the WSJ was absolutely sure that a CDMA
    version of the iPhone was going to be announced
    with the iPad…. so their irrefutable source has been
    full of it for a while. The only thing Apple cares about
    is the huge sums AT&T is paying to keep exclusivity.
    This is 100% profit, and they would need to sell a huge
    number of phones to replace what they are getting
    for nothing. If you are getting free beer, you will not
    pay for a better brand.

    Well this is cool news but I think iphone cdma is going to be thicker than gsm or have a removable back to allow batttery swaps for cdma more power hunger system as a verizon customer I be happy to see the Iphone on verizon.

    ENDLESS: Actually there are 20 markets up and operational NOW. I can name them but I won’t I know the market I am in (Nebraska) has 12 towers already converted and we are a 2011 market.

    I am not sure what you were referring to with the Pri. Verizon said they would get it after the exclusitivity contract ran out, they did, and they got a better version of it.

    BTW nice “deflect and deny” strategy. The debate was about WIMAX vs LTE not “Verizon lies” next thing you will mention I am sure is the same old “Verizon cripples their devices” even though they haven’t for nearly 2 years…sigh….

    I dont think it is going to happen. Apple has refused to deal with cdma carriers. In Canada Bell and tellus are
    cdma they dont have the iphone. those two carriers are just as big as verizon. However both Bell and TEllus
    decided to go hsdpa witch is gsm technologhy and now there getting the iphone with in a week. China Mobile
    has openly begged Apple for the iphone and Apple refuses to put the iphone on there network. China Mobile
    is the largest mobile carrier in the world with 500 million subscribers. Kddi also pleaded with apple but no iphone on there cdma network.

    When verizon goes Lte(gsm technology) then they will get an iphone. Four things happened when wsj report came out.
    1) verizon stock prices went up.
    2) Apple stock prices went up.
    3) smart phone sales and upgrades halted at verizon.
    4) qualcom stock prices went up.

    I would love to see how slow the data would be for the VZ iphone.

    Side by side a friend of mine with a droid and i was on my 3gs, no comparison at all! and the droid had one more bar than my 3gs. thats sad for verizon!

    Not an ATT fan, but went to it since my work is giving us a company phone and a BB Bold. I ditched the BB and bought a 3gs. So im happy with the no monthly service and being able to surf the web at a good speed.
