Verizon reportedly passing on the Palm Pre

Rumor

palm-pre1

If this latest Verizon/Palm Pre rumor pans out, there are going to be a whole lot of angry VZW subscribers and likely just as many chuckling Sprint fans. According to The Street, Verizon has decided to change its plans and skip the highly anticipated Palm handset. Specifically, “[The Palm Pre] had been scheduled to arrive at Verizon in January. But people close to the discussions say Verizon has decided not to support the Pre.” Palm’s first webOS-powered phone had been long-rumored to hit Verizon’s shelves some time in early 2010 and its arrival would have been a massive coup for Palm. The handset is still a Sprint exclusive here in the US and as far as we can tell, sales have been anything but stellar so far. Verizon, with the largest subscriber base in the US, stood to drastically improve Pre penetration but it looks like an insurmountable roadblock of some sort may have squashed those dreams. AT&T on the other hand, is still expected to carry the Palm Pre once Sprint’s exclusivity ends.

Thanks, E!

your wrong, the Verizon 900 minute plan with unlimited txt and pda smart phone feature is only 110. So it is the same price

  • pcd12225

    manny,

are you using the connect plan to figure out the prices because that is a $10 difference? With blackberry you can not go over a select plan because you would be doubling the data and the connect plan is only for the dumbphones. As for the lower plans, verizon offers a 59.99 plan with 450 min for the 65 plus crowd but there is also a 59.99 plan with 550 called a loyalty plan that they dont advertise but people can be put on.

I have to ask what 2 Web OS devices this carrier is getting with them having virtually no current phones sold made by Palm and only one out now and another maybe this year. What other Web OS will vzw get that nobody else has and will probably have before them

  • scroffy

Like rats fleeing a sinking ship. RIP palm. Only sprint will have you, and that’s because the dead carrier walking has to hang with the dead phone walking out of desperation.

I want to see what go to smartphone will they offer now, the Storm or some vzw branded Android device

  • Verizon Guy

Where’s Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) when you need him?

Today a number of “respectable” analysts (Deutsche Bank, Morgan Keegan) are already calling out The Street.

  • madog

Y are the Vz fanboys upset about this? If the pre is that important then switch to sprint. But on a side note, fuck vz, sprint, and palm. Tmo and android all the way baby.

This is a crushing blow. I have been on Verizon since the Treo 700w first debuted back in the day. I have now had my Samsung I760 for a year and a half and was lookin for something fresh. Of course, all we get are the same old blackberries and winmo devices. It is starting to piss me off that Verizon won’t offer the phones that its consumers really want.

  • Sonya

    @ madog

The majority of the post are people who are saying VZW is stupid or Palm sucks. I think there are about 5 post on here of people on VZW who really cared.

    “@ manny

On Verizon you can get 900 mins, 5 F&F, Unlimited text and BlackBerry data for 109.99

    Unlimited Text = 20.00
    Unlimited PDA/BlackBerry data = 29.99
    900 mins + 5 F&F = 79.99″

    Um, might wanna check that math. $79.99 + $29.99 + $20.00 = $129.98

  • TedKord

    Ah, I see. It’s not your math, it’s a mistaken figure. The 900 minute Blackberry plan w/ 5 F&F is $59.99, not $79.99.

That does indeed come out to $110/mo.

why would Verizon get the Pre when they could get the iPhone? its a no brainer move.

engadgetmobile is calling this report as false too, I believe there is some truth to it

This is pretty much Palm’s fault. First of all, they wasted their product launch with an irrelevant carrier. They’ve taken forever to line up release agreements with other carriers. They didn’t immediately release a GSM version worldwide. They had absolutely no foresight with recruiting developers and having a vibrant app store. The only way to apparently market a Pre is by touting multi-tasking and the battery sucking, life force gobbling Synergy.

And whatever they put into making Verizon carry their phone, it is now conclusively, a waste. Honestly, I’m not sure how anyone launches anything on Verizon with a proper longterm trajectory. How do you adapt to a carrier going from CDMA to LTE? Do you have to waste money creating a dual compatibility phone for just one carrier? Palm may have saved themselves some hassle here and in addition, Verizon already has the Storm 2 coming out, which should serve just fine as the hype phone for everyone.

At the end of the day though, this only hurts Palm. They might as well stop introducing placeholder models like the Pixie and pulling Apple type nonsense, like having flagship phones without video recording, before I think anyone thinks they have really made a comeback.

  • Bdizzah

Correct me if i’m wrong but doesn’t the chinese network run on CDMA? If that so, to all the people saying apple wouldn’t make a cdma iphone, they are already being manufactured. So that, plus this palm snub, may infact mean the iphone on verizon is closer than we think. The pre is cool, but if you walked into the store and saw the palm pre on the left, and the iphone(the biggest me too phone since the razr) on the right, which one would you leave the store with?

  • Jim

    Oh, silly Verizon.

Don’t you know that, try as you might with your own so-called ‘App Store’ and VCast, your days of becoming a dumb pipe will soon be upon you?

  • Jim

    Verizon is getting the iphone?

    Link, please.

  • JB

All the vzw bashers go toss off… Att just got fucking mms on their iphones. Who gives a fuck about palm, if you want to talk about crippling phones att did it when they released the 2G in 2007. If you actually need email your rocking a BB, if you just use your phone to text your boyfriend Raymond you are most likely on an iphone, if you need to tell your robot your running late you may have a pre. Gay. Fuck you Hans.

China supports multiple technologies – they even have 3 different 3G technologies – WCDMA (aka UMTS), TD-CDMA (a homegrown standard without foreign licensing fees), and CDMA-EVDO. That, plus a number of 2G technologies. I highly doubt that the Chinese version of the iPhone works on anything but the WCDMA network.

  • Sonya

Well since this is false I guess you guys better copy your comments and save them for another day. 98% of the comments were people who weren’t even on Verizon. So that means there’s a lot of haters on this site for no reason. Enjoy your carrier and your phone and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing if it doesn’t effect you. Bunch of grown ass men acting like my best friends back in 3rd grade.

  • Neo

    @jhh
I can tell u r not a VZW fanboy, u don’t talk out of ur ass. U r right, the iPhone for china is a WCDMA phone.
