Oh noes, Fido BlackBerry 8100s appearing in stores

Exclusive

We’ve just received word that Canada’s Fido Wireless has begun shipping out the first batch of Blackberry Pearl 8100 devices to its retail stores. A number of shops have already received their first packages, well ahead of the anticipated February 4th release date. The actual boxes are an oh-so-pretty baby blue color, similar to the current Bell Blackberry packaging. This is all well and good, but if you’ve been hankering for a Fido branded ‘Berry you’re still gonna have to wait. Their POS system still doesn’t contain any actual Blackberry plans, so reps won’t be able to activate the devices even if you find one friendly enough to give it a shot. Then again, the appeal of the 8100 died roughly 2 years ago, so we can’t imagine too many folks are chomping at the bit for this one. Either way, it’s good to see that the handsets are arriving, as it shows the carrier is taking steps to have more than a couple on hand when the actual launch day comes around. And you all know you’re going to BYOB (Bring Your Own Berry) anyway. Hit the jump for one more shot.

Thanks, Mike!

    why does your title say 8120 while your article says 8100?

    who cares…it’s fido branded Berry!!!!….YEY!!!

    was thinking the same thing.. 8120 seems good, but releasing a 8100 is a joke. RIM needs to retire that phone.

    Can someone tell me why this is such a big deal?

    I had the BB Pearl 8100 in September of 2006, when it first came out.

    @Charlie

    No one cares that it’s the 8100 first, all they care is that Fido will be opening its doors to people who already have a BlackBerry. There is a huge amountt of people holding onto amazing grandfathered voice plans while keeping a seperate line for BlackBerry services with Rogers. Now those people can go back to using their grandfathered voice plan and have BIS added to said plan.

    Fido is probably getting the left over 8100′s that didn’t sell!

    chances are their going to sell this at 50$ on a 2 year plan, looking at site

    there is a blank link for a phone, i’m assuming its going to be the 8100. Comparing the 8100 to the rest of the fido line, the 8100 is going to sell fast.

    Just because we have more knowledge about technology, doesn’t mean everyone else does.
