OQO + Garmin GPS solution review

Review

You might have seen us post something on the new Garmin GPS solution for the OQO model 02. It’s a great concept and we’ve had the opportunity of reviewing it recently. If you buy the whole package, which is the car mount for the actual OQO and the Garmin USB GPS device, you’d have what we have. While it’s nice in theory, you can see from the above video what sort of trouble we ran into. If you totally want to skip the video, these are our issues with the package:

  • To get an initial satellite lock took around 20 minutes. Open sky, clear and sunny day
  • The mount for the OQO covers the speakers so you can’t hear didly squat from the GPS software
  • When trying to enter an address, it actually made us write in the city, street name, and street number with the friggin’ pen! (Yes, as we later found out you can use the hardware keyboard, but there should totally be a huge on-screen keyboard)
  • The suction cups that comes with the GPS unit totally suck. Actually, they don’t suck. They fall off everywhere
  • This isn’t a fault of the GPS unit or the OQO really, but since the device has an active touch screen, you can’t use your fingers at all to tap different menu items. This is a royal pain in the ass since you either have to use the included tablet pen, or fiddle around with the trackstick mouse.
  • This is quite possibly the hardest setup to use while driving. We know, you shouldn’t use it while driving, but let’s be honest, are you really pulling over to the shoulder to enter in an address?
Has anyone out there given this a go? We want to like it, we do, but practically, we don’t think this works.

    Liking the video reviews.

Kinda reminds me a little bit of CNET, which my pal Les Moonves paid what for? ;)

    Nice video review.

i think the suction cup mount sticks onto the windshield.

  • Marc

Thats an Aston Martin. I can tell by the dash board.

God, do you really have to find the dumbest people to do these video reviews? How sad is that. He can’t even figure out how to use a RAM systems suction cup mount for the OQO. Duh, like it takes a rocket scientist, to figure out, you can adjust the arm, and make it stick to the windshield, and not the dash. All it will leave on the glass is a circle after some time, which you can wipe off. Do you think, the reason it took 20 minutes to get a lock, could be because, the GPS receiver is hanging under the OQO, not out on the dash with a clear view of the sky like it should be. And what about all the trees directly in front of the car? How about, actually giving the GPS unit a clear shot of the sky. What a novel idea. Are the people doing this review technologically challenged? This review doesn’t mean jack, because the people in the video are totally inept with electronics.

    @aaron

That’s the BG himself doing the review.

I know the mount is supposed to be on the windshield but it didn’t fit since the windshield is so close to the dashboard. Also, the suction cups for the actual GPS receiver only hold the wire so the GPS would have been dangling. Additionally, I had a clear view of the sky jackass.

The car was sweet, the girl sounded cute, and the garmin looked clunky.

I’ll wait and see if the iPhone2 car mount is more slick.

I do think BG could have spent some time with the manual while the thing took its sweet time to get a locate. ;)

But 90% of the people out there only give a glance at the manual, (me included) and expect the product to be user friendly, which isn’t really asking much.

    ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING LMFAO!!
what a lame product. That seems like it should be been released, hmm idk, 4 years ago?… and honestly, the speaker is covered? WTF That video was almost as funny as the 2 asian guys with teddy bears and rainbows.

  • Strugglin

    Is that the DB9?!?

  • champ22

who knew the BG loves him some wu-tang ….dolla dolla bills yallll lol ….i love this site even more now

  • Tom108

BG i hate you. you drive and Aston Martin?

well that was one of the more humorous video reviews i have seen. good job. ;)

  • Aaron

That won’t be a problem for most people, since they can’t afford Aston Martins. Still, if you are gonna do a video review, make it informative, not someone cussing and complaining because things aren’t working just right.

    @ Aaron

Regardless of what car you drive, the physical setup coupled with the less-than-stellar software won’t change. It’s incredibly clunky, and your $400 would be much better served by buying a standalone GPS unit. Did you even watch the video? Me mounting it had no affect on performance what so ever, not in the slightest. So, I’ll give you that point to be fair, fine. Now please justify the rest of the major issues with that setup, from the software asking you to handwrite entries, to the speaker being covered by the mount, the list goes on and on.

Bg is getting pissed boys. Let him do what ever he wants. If he doesn’t like the product then I don’t like it. Tats it tats all

  • Aaron

I’ll give ya all that. Must be a fluke with that setup. Haven’t had a Garmin Issue like that yet. I just think the review would be a little better if you tried it out first, and then filmed it after you figured out all the problems. A better view of the screen and its inability to work would be helpful as well. Apologies for my first post, as it was a little heated. No hard feelings. :-)

Guys, give BG a break on this one. He probably doesn’t have the time or resources to do a through review. But let’s face it the OQO was designed to be a UMPC. Not a mobile GPS device. I think this was marketing at OQO trying to boost sales of the device, basically saying “hey look at what we can do!” With out putting much thought into it. Or at the very least re-designing the case or interface for mobile GPS purposes.

But BG you must admit that you complaining about having no keyboard, while at the same time the OQO’s keyboard is starring you in the face. LOL! Thankfully you quickly realized the keyboard was there, I bet you were just looking for an on-screen kb which it should have BTW, because after all the user has the touch pen right there.

Also BG don’t forget that if the GPS device doesn’t find satellites with-in 1min, then you should start moving to a better spot if there is one available.

BTW, love your taste in cars!

  • kuhndog

if i write a blog.. can i play with unreleased electronics and drive an aston martin?…. please? seriously BG what’s your background.. I need some bio action..

  • Jeff B.

Yea man, we hear about you and your 50 billion phones that “mysteriously” pop up at your front door like every week and we see you in an Aston Martin (DB9 or a Vanquish…or that new one that I totally spaced on the name of…) but we don’t know where it all came from, I mean besides Engadget but they don’t pay that well…do they? Gimme a little boost over at their HQ, maybe they can hook me up with your kinda action? Yea…?

The reason why it took so long for gps is because you probably turned it on for the first time. The first time a GPS unit is turned on, it needs to find its spot and get an almanac (since you can be in California, NY or somewhere else). Once this all syncs up and the machine is ready to roll, the next time you turn it on, it knows the general area you are in and it will get GPS very quickly.

Also, you did no help by putting the gps antenna to the back of the unit or facing it to the front of the car. It needs to sit flat facing up (into the sky) and no,it does not go through metal, plastic only.

  • Kerozin

First of all that suction coup is designed to be mounted on glass and not dash plastics and you have to moisturize it with few drops of water before mounting.

Secondly that “GPS thingy” is actually antenna and it has it’s own little suction cup so you can mount it near rear view mirror which is only place on athermic windshield which won’t block GPS signal.

    RTFM!
