We always knew they will return. Earth is apparently a primary target for the aliens that mankind managed to defeat back in 1996 though Earth suffered massive losses. Entire cities were lost before Captain Steven Hiller and scientist David Levinson managed to kill the alien mothership. But in 2016, an attack seems inevitable.
Jeff Goldblum is back as Levinson, and so are Bill Pullman (President Whitmore), Judd Hirsch (Julius Levinson) and Brent Spiner (Dr. Brakish Okun). Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, Maika Monroe, William Fichtner join the cast of Independence Day: Resurgence, with the same Roland Emmerich directing.
What happened to Hiller, played by Will Smith? Well, in addition to the first trailer, there’s also a special website where you can check out the humanity’s progress for the last 20 years. At Warof1996.com, we learned that Captain Hiller died in a tragic accident in 2007, as he was testing a fighter equipped with alien technology.
Speaking of alien technology used to improve defenses and set up battle posts on the Moon and other planets, we also learn from the website that alien tech lead to the invention of the touchscreen smartphone, bladeless fan, drones, and airport security scanners.
It certainly looks like the folks at 20th Century Fox are going to use marketing tricks as seen in the promotion of The Martian earlier this year, adding a complex historical background that explains what happened before the events in the new movie.
The new Independence Day movie premieres on June 24th, 2016. Check out the full trailer below.
