Microsoft's Windows Phone Mango Games Hub changes revealed

Gaming

On Tuesday, Microsoft noted several of the Games Hub changes that will go into effect when Windows Phone Mango launches this fall. Mango’s Games Hub will include new “Avatar Awardables” which, much like on the Xbox 360, will allow you to dress your avatar up with a number of unique clothing items. The first title to support Avatar Awardables will be the game “Chickens Can’t Fly.” Games Hub will also feature new game add-ons. For example, in the game “Beards & Beaks,” users will be able to purchase additional in-game add-ons using Microsoft Points. Microsoft will also provide deeper parental controls and will offer a new “Fast Async” technology that will improve turn-by-turn and multiplayer games. Read on for a link to Microsoft’s official Windows Team Blog where the company has also listed the next 14 Xbox LIVE titles that will be available for Windows Phone devices.

Running the Mango RTM (and beta this summer) the Games Hub is considerably better/faster than in NoDo. This, the live tiles, metro UI design, and the card like multitasking (thanks WebOS!) always make people go “oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhh.”

Can you adjust Font size yet on a WP7? Wife has Quantum and the Font size is like a 4. Too small to see. I won’t get a WP 7 until they add that feature. Not going to hold my phone 2″ from my face to read the Micro Text.

For Xbox Live being such a selling point for WP7, or at least what they seem to advertise a lot, it sure is lackluster. Really was expecting a lot more high quality games and features like pause the game on your phone and continue on your Xbox.

I would say that’s coming, more like a next gen thing.  Maybe by Apollo (WP8) when they start adding cloud based tie-ins between the two and stuff like that.  Starting to see moves that way with Kinectimals being able to load up your saved animals from the XBox version on the Phone game etc.

We’re still in year one of WP7 don’t forget.

Also, Mango update has parental restriction code for ESRB rated games… so *supposedly* better games will be coming once Mango arrives… everything right now has to be ‘E’ for Everyone.

Now,  where this restriction on game sales due to ESRB comes from, is beyond me.  But apparently MS wants to stick to it.  I guess so if you hand your phone to you daughter to play DoodleJump, she won’t accidentally load up Splinter Cell and starting killing terrorists.   Whatever.
