comScore: iOS reach 59% greater than Android in U.S.

mobile

Would you believe that iOS’ U.S. install-base is 59% greater than that of Android? No? Us either, but that is exactly what analytics company comScore is reporting. Via its MobiLens service, the company states that Apple has accrued a 16.2% share of the U.S.’s 234 million media devices, while Google’s Android operating system currently holds a 10.2% share. “comScore’s analysis of the unduplicated audience reach of the Apple iOS platform across iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches revealed a combined iOS installed base of 37.9 million users,” writes comScore. “The combined 37.9 million iOS users is 59 percent greater than the 23.8 million combined Android OS installed base, which includes users of both Android phones and connected media devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab.” The report also noted that 17.5% of iPad owners use BlackBerry smartphones and 14.2% own Android devices — comScore uses this data to suggest that “iPad ownership extends well beyond Apple’s most fervent consumers.” Hit the read link to check out the complete report.

LIES!!!! DROID is no.1! Come on carriers, shut this rumor up, more BOGOS, discounts and free phones. We’ve got to right this wrong.

    • Anonymous

Norm, you are a troll. You make negative comments on EVERY Apple article.

      • Calvin Williams

Hes a sarcastic troll. He’s making fun of Android if you didn’t catch that yet.

      • Anonymous

Norm has a long history of making negative comments on this site about Apple for a long time.
        Norm is a troll.
        Norm, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?

      • Nope

the old Norm was…this new dude is pretty off

      • Calvin Williams

        @wer4414
I don’t know why you are complaining. Looking at your post history for 30 seconds makes you look just as bad.

        @Nope
Yeah just read all his posts like they were meant to be sarcastic and you can see what I mean.

I’ve been making this argument for months, but people are too slow to comprehend it. When it comes to mobile, with very few exceptions Android means phones, thats it while iOS has had tremendous success in PMPs and tablets. Not rocket science.

    • Anonymous

There’s no room for rational thought. A flamewar is brewing here.

    • https://me.yahoo.com/a/J7Mg.aBrt_zUZAONR5KHn_om4dCMew--#37f81 indio7777

      That’s not ‘rational’.

      See my post above.

8 years of Apple products, only 2 of Android. Android is kicking butt.

      • http://ocentertainment.net ocentertainment

While you’re right that Android is doing phenomenally well, Adam (and by association, the article) does still have a point. There are simply more iOS users than Android users in the U.S. right now. It’s a relevant fact, also, beyond mere pissing contests. Developers, for example, looking for the largest audiences for their apps would do well to consider not just iPhone users, but iPod Touch users and, assuming their apps were tablet-friendly as well, iPad users. It’s important information to have.

Of course, this is also only the current state of the market. Android phones are currently activating more devices daily than the entirety of iOS, and the onslaught of Android tablets is only just beginning. The upcoming Galaxy Tabs (the 8.9 and the 10.1) are looking to be huge hits, as they have all of the capabilities of the Xoom, are lighter and sleeker, and also, they’re branded and priced to perfection. The Galaxy series is well-known by now, and there are options to buy cheaper versions. Contrast with the Xoom launch which saw the most expensive model launched first, with the cheaper ones very slowly trickling out, while current Xoom owners who spent the most are still waiting on all of the features they were promised. In short, there’s reason to believe that Android tablet sales will heat up, but even if that takes a while, Android phones are doing plenty well on their own to close the gap between the entirety of the iOS platform.

Android fans don’t need to worry about the size of their epeen. Growth is strong enough that it won’t take much time before there’s more Android users than iOS. In the meantime, iOS fans can relax knowing that almost three years after the advent of Android, the iOS platform as a whole is still giving it a run for its money.

        It’s all good.

      • Anonymous

        Huh?

        iOS was released in 2007.
        Android was released in 2008.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Johnathan-Timmons/1074131881 Johnathan Timmons

    Sounds like denial.

  • Tim242

These numbers are based on non phone devices.

    • Joel

Which is why the article states iOS is more popular in the US they didn’t say iPhone. Secondly the android is non phone as well cause they includes tablet devices running android. Pretty even comparison.

      • Tim242

A fair comparison? Does Android have an ipod touch equivalent? The first
Android tablets are just hitting the market. Android already rules the phone
market, the tablet market will be soon enough.

      • Joel

Yes it is a fair comparison. Just because Android hasn’t caught up yet doesn’t mean anything. It is a comparison of where the devices running the respective OS are at in total market share as OF TODAY. Gosh, you Android fanboys are so quick to try to pull numbers. At the end of the day it is like a benchmark number, meaningless.

And yes Samsung does produce a iPod touch equivalent. Even though it is not in the states yet, Android does have an equivalent.

      • Tim242

These numbers are US numbers, so including Samsung’s player is silly.
Android is king. End of story.

      • LIFE

Duuuuuude get that lil android monster out ya butt… y r u so anal about Apple?? if you dig android enjoy being in the 41%..we all like different things, like you enjoy man on man others may not.

      • Tim242

If you like iPhone, enjoy being in your 24%. I am enjoying being in the 34%
        : )

      • Serpentor

        @ joel

No it’s not a fair comparison. Not only is it counting ipods – iphone and ipad has over a year head start each.

      • Michael Scrip

@Tim242 — “If you like iPhone, enjoy being in your 24%. I am enjoying being in the 34% “

Oh noes… Apple is “losing” to Android. Good thing that $5 Billion in profit they will announce soon will heal their wounds. :)

Apple has 24% of the US smartphone market with only 5 models…

Google’s Android OS has 34% with dozens of models from many manufacturers…

        Which is really more impressive?

      • Tim242

Iphone has more than 5 models. Iphone has been on the market much longer.
Since Android hit, iphone market share has been stagnant. I don’t see that
as impressive. It only achieved it’s market share when there was no
competion for that type of device. Android’s growth is impressive, no matter
which way you try to spin it. Nothing, to world’s most used OS in a year.

      • Michael Scrip

“Iphone has more than 5 models. Iphone has been on the market much longer.”

Right… but you quoted the current US numbers… 34% to 24%

That’s how many phones are currently in use. I don’t think there are that many original iPhone 2G from 2007 still around anyway.

“Since Android hit, iphone market share has been stagnant. I don’t see that as impressive.”

And yet Apple can sell 150,000 iPhones a day… isn’t that what they’re supposed to be doing? They sell phones! And any other company would KILL for those numbers.

    • Anonymous

No, they’re based on all devices.

Apparently the eight years you spent in high school didn’t improve your reading comprehension.

      • Tim242

Android already rules the phone market…will do the same in the tablet
        market soon enough.

      • Joel

Your point? Windows owns the PC Market, but Windows computers are crap compared to OSX. All Android users (since the G1) have wanted to be different and not be a “status symbol” like the iPhone was and now all you guys can do is scream how you “own” the market share. At what point does market share relate to product quality? In economics you give away something for free, it will eventually flood the market share (I’m not talking about BOGO but Android OS being free).

      • Tim242

The OS may be free, but not Gapps. They pay for those dearly. Not to mention
the cost of developing their own skins.

    • Anonymous

Correct. Android is losing when it comes to non-phone devices.

      • Tim242

Well, since Android tablets are just hitting the market…that makes sense.
That will change soon : )

  • Anonymous

What is there to be surprised about? How many Android Touch Music Players do you think are out there selling at BestBuy, Target, Walmart, and vending machines kiosks?

  • Anonymous

Funny that this info comes to light the day before Apple posts earnings and the same day that Analysts find out that Apple’s iPad 2, while selling very well, is still underperforming estimates by a whopping 50%.

    • Anonymous

More than 50%. Our analysts at the Goofan (aka Apple Hater) intelligence teams estimate that iPad’s sales are underperforming by a whopping 1055%.

  • http://profiles.google.com/okgreen.73 Omar Green

I love when people beat their chests about mobile operating systems as if they were the software engineers who actually designed the platforms…nonsense.

    • Anonymous

Well, the only ones smart and sophisticated enough to build their OS are Goofans (aka Apple Haters!)

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/PACMan3000/ Paul A. Chapel

I’ve also been saying this for months, but the Android Fanboys only want to talk about smartphone sales, which makes sense, since there are like 50 Android phones on 4 carriers, compared to 2 iPhones on 2 carriers, once of which has only been available on Verizon for 3 and half months.

It’s pathetic that after Android manufacturers are literally giving away phones for free, they still can’t beat Apple.

For the record, by March 2011, Apple had sold 108 million iPhones, 60 million iPod Touches and 19 million iPads. That’s 187 million iOS devices.

Of course, we’ll never know exactly how many units are sold running Android because Google only releases “activation” numbers instead of actual sales. An activation occurs every time someone installs a new ROM on their Android phone.

Not that market share is the ultimate indicator of anything. Apple had never led with market share in the smartphone market and have been outsold by RIM and Nokia for years. Where Apple leads is profit share.

    • Steve Hillshire

“It’s pathetic that after Android manufacturers are literally giving away phones for free, they still can’t beat Apple. ”

It’s pathetic when high on the horse iBoys think that BOGOs and cheap phones are what makes Android popular. If you would take a moment and pull your head out of Steve’s a$$, you’d see the most popular Android phones out there are NOT the cheap ones but the high end ones that don’t have BOGO specials and cost nearly the same (if not more in some cases) as an iPhone.

“For the record, by March 2011, Apple had sold 108 million iPhones, 60 million iPod Touches and 19 million iPads. That’s 187 million iOS devices.”

So for a long time, iBoys beat their chest on how the iPhone with iOS was outselling Android phones. Fast forward, and now that Android smart phones are kicking the turtlenecks off of the iPhones, suddenly the comparison switches. Hey, if that’s what makes you iBoys feel good, then have at it. Just like phones, in another 2 years, the iPad will be in second (or even third) place just like the iPhone is now.

“Where Apple leads is profit share. ”

Glad its your pockets they are soaking!

      • Anonymous

I’ve made this same argument several times. They were happy to tout market share when they were on a tear. Now that iOS has been relatively stagnant and Android has pulled ahead, market share is suddenly no longer relevant. And for whatever reason, they are now trumping up the profit of Apple. Hey, that’s great that Apple is making money. It is typically no the kind of thing that consumers should be happy about. Where do the iFans think that the high profits that Apple pulls in come from?

      • Anonymous

You are so right. Google on the other hand makes profits from heaven. :-) Goofans (aka Apple Haters) like you and I are the smartest people alive. Bar none. Especially, Goofans (aka Apple Haters)

      • Anonymous

“It is typically not the kind of thing that consumers should be happy about.”

Where do you think Google’s profits come from? In the Android world, YOU are the product, yet you pay for it in cash as well.

Apple users only pay one time.

      • http://twitter.com/fvsanpedro Francis San Pedro

Not that I’m doubting what you said, but is there an article out there indicating which Android phones are the top sellers?

I’m interested in seeing which ones sell the most.

Right because all those ipod nanos and shuffles are really competing with android. Right.

Sillly dum-dum. They’re not talking about nanos and shuffles. iPod Touches only. You know, like, the ones running iOS? Silly dum-dum – you and the dum-dums who “liked” your comments.

Hey, if we can include TV’s and dvd players, we can crown Samsung as #1 in all devices…

    What a crock..

    • Joel

They are comparing the OPERATING SYSTEMS you moron. Samsung doesn’t run Android on its blu-ray or TV’s.

You are such a ignorant individual. Every post of yours is trying to make yourself feel better about having an Android device. At the end of the day, besides you, who really cares if you own a iOS or Android device? No one!

This is so hard to believe. Can it really be? 2 iPhones on two carriers, iPads and iPod touch, compared to the 40+ Android devices on ever carrier! Not to mention Apple adding a second carrier only this year! WOW! Let’s see Android try that with only 3 devices. LOL!

Only 59%? Wow, Android is kicking butt.

The first iPod was introduced in 2001; 10 years of iO/S based products, and Android introduced in Oct 2008 on the first phone…in 2 years Android has nearly beat Apple’s 8 year head start.

    Pretty amazing.

    • Anonymous

wow your dumb… its iOS devices meaning iPhone and Ipod Touch introduced in 2007. not the original iPod from 10 years ago lol 8 year head start? LMAO

how about comparing orange to orange? android doesn’t have an ipod like device, why not keep it fair and compare mobile OS to mobile OS count? save the Ipods numbers to the apple shareholders.

    • Anonymous

Uhh there are at least a zillion Android based PMP’s, did you miss any of that?

  • Tjoannou2001

No offense but why so negativity about iphone and all Apple products? I had the pleasure to own both iphone 3g and then i had iphone 4. Then went for Blackberry Torch (worst phone ever in my opinion) and then to HTC Desire Z(which is great phone really liked it) and now im back to my lovely Iphone4. What i am trying to say is that both android and IOS are both great and they both have the good points and bad. For me i would stick with my Iphone because it is what i know and love. But android phones are catching up and they are loads of cool handsets out there at the moment. But people tend to forget. Apple just have the one handset were Android is spread to multiple handsets from different companies hence why they would be more users to android. Anyway enough of me going on and on so all i will say stop acting like little kids arguing which thing is better and give proper discussions not flipping school yard arguments

    • Anonymous

Because our friends tell us that it is GAY to like and love Apple products. In addition, Goofans (aka Apple Haters) believe that Apple products are for people that don’t like complexity (e.g. don’t know about technology) and are not very smart. So there you have it!

      • Tjoannou2001

Well your friends that tell you that it is GAY to like and love Apple products need to get a life because at the end of the day its a freaking phone and music player nothing else. There is a line where you can like something and it goes beyond stupid to call something gay for liking a product. As for people that say that Apple products is for people that are not very smart again all the Apple Haters need to get a life and start acting their age.

I am not trying to start an argument or anything all i am trying to say is that is that both systems are great even though IOS could do with the new update straight away i am looking forward to that and that Android is great as well with great features but i just find it silly that grown people argue over which handset is better like school kids than have discussions like adults that you would expect from a Tech site.

      • Anonymous

Thanks Tjoannou2001! You make a lot of sense and seem to be a very nice and logical individual. That said, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING ON THIS SITE????? The folks here are NOT very logical and though mostly nice, they bear their teeth in the most unreasonable manner and with totally senseless subjects. :-)

      • Tjoannou2001

Listen GOOFAN whatever your bloody name is. I am here to read about the latest tech that is going on in the world and i really enjoy reading these blogs. What i do find funny is that grown ups probably like yourself have stupid nicknames and argue over the most stupid little things in whats better..Who cares if the iphone or android is better? They are both very great OS’s great phones and they both have their pros and cons. It really makes me laugh that people like you and a troll face called Norm with his name in the Froyo or android logo or whatever that little robot name is post on every single article that is on this site.

Grow up and make discussions like freaking adults not like kids. And for your info Iphone and apple in general are better cause number one they only have only released one handset ie iphone and been upgrading it to the gorgeous sexy beast it is today and with the next one coming out i am sure its going to blow everything out of its way.(well i would not go that far but it will the top selling phone out there i am sure of that same as the current one did) And before anyone says anything yes Android do have shed loads of new handsets coming out and they are top top phones but here is one company going against loads so give them credit for what they are achieving..And that is a FACT

      • Anonymous

Relax Tjoannou2001! You are taking this WAY to seriously. I know I am not. :-) Cheers!

      • Tjoannou2001

Not taking it seriously says the guy who has a stupid nickname as his username. Buddy grow up and im chilled out. At least your not as bad as norm that has to comment on every article. By the way what is your opinion on the BB Torch? I had that handset for a few months and honestly was the worst one i ever had
