Apple, AT&T, Verizon Wireless confirm tomorrow’s 5PM retail launch of iPad 2; online sales at 1AM Pacific

Tablets

Apple, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless have independently fired off press releases letting us know exactly how and when we can acquire yourself an iPad 2 tomorrow, March 11th. Starting at 5:00 p.m. local time, interested parties can head to an Apple, AT&T, or Verizon Wireless retail store to purchase the 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB tablet in white or black. Verizon will be offering four data plans for the iPad 2:

  • 1GB per month – $20
  • 3GB per month – $35
  • 5GB per month – $50
  • 10GB per month – $80

While AT&T will be offering just two in both the pre-paid and post-paid formats:

  • Monthly statements:  $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2GB.  Customers who exceed their monthly data allotment will be billed $14.99 for another 250MB on the $14.99 plan or $10 per 1 GB of overage on the 2 GB plan [AT&T is offering consumers who choose monthly statement billing one free month of service].
  • Credit card billing:  $14.99 for 250 MB or $25 for 2 GB.  Customers who exceed their monthly data allotment may choose to purchase another 250 MB on the $14.99 plan or purchase an additional 2 GB for $25 on the 2 GB plan.

All models of the iPad 2 — Wi-Fi and 3G — will also be available at Apple retail stores and select Walmart, Best Buy, Sam’s Club and Target stores nationwide starting at 5:00 p.m. AT&T and Verizon stores will only carry GSM and CDMA iPads respectively. If you’re not inclined to hit up a retail outlet, but are still interested in the tablet, AT&T and Apple will begin selling the iPad 2 online at 1:00 a.m. Pacific Time (4:00 a.m. Eastern) on the 11th. There you have it, if you’re jones’ing to get yourself an iPad 2, start formulating your game plan.

VZW plans look better. And heck, your tablet might work in NYC!

you are right Verizon look to have a way better deal than At&t but still i cant believe Appl didnt make a 4G instead of 3G

Given the unmitigated disaster that is AT&Ts 3G network, er, “network,” I dont know if their 4G network is worth holding one’s breath for – at least in places like SF, NYC, Michigan.

That’s Apple one step at a time. You’ve gotten front and rear cameras, a dual core processor, and a few other minor hardware tweaks. Remember when the original iPhone came out At&t was not trying to sell anymore 2G phones but, the original was. The following year the only major difference was the 3G radios. Then they speeded up the processor, etc. the following year. The 4th generation was almost a complete device overhaul. So on the iPad 2 you’ve gotten a faster processor and video chat capabilities, in exchange for the 4G radios.

Actually, the price points are almost exactly the same. At&t has 2GB for $25. It’s $10 for every 1GB over with this plan, which would make 3GB $35. This is the same as Verizon. 5GB would equal 3GB overage at a price of $30+$25 for the first 2GB which equals $55. $5 more for each plan over that 3GB range. But in areas like VA where I live, it might be worth it to customers. The service is comparable to Verizon quality wise and the data speed is faster than Verizon.

Will Best Buy sell the Wi-Fi+3G edition as well, or do I have to go to the carrier store/Apple Store?

      i tried to reply with a link but BGR doesnt allow that;

SKUs on one website make it appear they will only have WiFi version

    • Raisinn

I just checked the Best Buy site. They have them all listed.

Will Walmart and Best Buy be selling these at 5:00pm as well? Or is that time just for the Apple, Wireless stores?

Can anyone confirm or deny that Verizon is charging a $35 initial activation fee to use their 3g? And subsequently a $35 activation fee each time you go more than 3 months without using 3g?

From what it looks like, Verizon doesn’t have Pre-paid options.

      • User

        VZW’s is all prepay.

      • User

VZW’s is only offering this as a prepay service. There is no reason to have it as a postpay because they are not discounting the device.

      • Whoareu

yes there is. with AT&T you can attach it to your cellphone bill, not have to worry about “refilling your account”, and there is NO activation fee.

    • User

No Activation fee. See VZW’s website.

Do you have to have a myfi to work on Verizon?

    • Anonymous

No it will be built in this time.

    On AT&T
The Personal Hotspot feature being introduced with iOS 4.3 is also available to customers who choose the $25 plan plus a $20 tethering option that provides an extra 2 GB of data.

What time does Best Buy, Target and Walmart start selling the iPad? Will they wait for the 5PM release or sell when doors open?

  • Simple Jack

Look, it’s a beaten’ down dead horse….move along….nothing to see here.

This will be interesting to see which 3G version of the tablet sells more units. I currently don’t know which carrier I’ll be going with. $20 for a gig is outstanding next to at&t’s abysmal 250mb/$15, but at the same time, I usually don’t go over 250mb anyways, and at&t is faster.this is such a tough decision……. I think I’ll go with at&t.

These data rates are pitiful. My only wish in the world would be nobody buy this garbage from these wireless companies. Too bad that will never come true.

I was gonna get in line, ’til I heard that the camera is “lacking”… guess it’s the iPad3 for me. Imagine if the front facing one were 5+… you could have a cool large format camera. “Hood sold separately.” :)

  • nahhhhh

Walked into Microcenter on Saturday morning, they had 4 different models available, no wait, no line. Picked up a 16 GB Black with 3g (AT&T). I guess no one figured out that Microcenter will cary them at launch as well. Good luck!
