Apple selling original iPad for $399

Breaking

If you’re in the market for an iPad but don’t really think you need those FaceTime cameras, dual-core processor, and thinner profile, you can swack an original iPad for only $399 directly from Apple starting immediately. $399 gets you the 16GB Wi-Fi unit while the entire lineup is available for $100 less than the original release pricing. No telling how long this will last or how much inventory Apple has, but it’s certainly one of the best deals we’ve seen.

I don’t see how an iPad can be useful (or any android tablet for that matter, so fanboyisms aside)…but that’s a damn good price. Makes moto’s pad look really expensive.

It’s a great consumer device. My mother loves hers and basically 95% of what she does on a computer can be accomplished with the iPad… and that is why Apple sells millions of the damn things.

I’m more skeptical, but with more Airplay capabilities it’s looking like I’ll pick one up.

I can see the “cool” factor, but that’s about it…They justify price through novelty. I mean honestly, you can pick up a netbook for the same price that’s capable of a hell of a lot more. Might not be as pretty, but idk, if it came between function and fashion I would choose function every time given the price.

I was just on a ski trip, and both my BiL and Mom each had iPads. The 2 iPads were in constant use amongst our group of 8 people, far moreso than the laptops we had were. I thought iPads were a novelty too until last week.

The only real limitation was AT&Ts nonexistent 3G network, but we got WiFi hooked up at the cabin and all was resolved.

Do you realize that because you may not have a use for it doesn’t mean others don’t? I’m sure a few years ago many people said “I don’t see why I need a phone that does all that” while they are now using their iPhones, Androids and BB.

I only want it because for commuting purposes everyday to work…

I really hope you don’t mean while you’re driving…Other than that if you have that much money to throw away to use this a single-purpose device then I wont try and convince you otherwise lol.

The Motorola Xoom pad is really expensive. That should not be priced at 799. Its not worth it at all.

    $350 for an Apple refurb

  • Petey

For $100 more, I rather get the ipad 2… still thinking about it.

This is AWESOME news. I hope Apple keeps producing them to keep the competition going like they do with their previous gen iPhones. Cus that just means that tablets like the HP Touchpad will have to lower its price to compete against the mindshare leader iPad. I sure cant wait to get a Touchpad for $400-$500. I sure do love pinching pennies.

$399? meh. $349 for refurb with 1-year warranty? In for 2 instead of the Xoom. And I pocket $100.

When you go through to the Apple store the original $499 price comes up…

  • Anonymous

    Weird, i still see $499.

    • Scorp

You have to look in the clearance section of the store. The iPad section of the store only shows iPad 2.

Wow, HUGELY disruptive. This erodes all the android tablet pricing for the rest of the year. Before this announcement, the Xoom pricing used to only look really, really absurd. Now….

dude you guys are the worst at liveblogging – or lack there of

    • Scorp

I know right. I went right on over to engadget for up to the minute blogging. This site sucked big time.

First thing first. You can get a Sammy galaxy tab for 299. So if you compare those two its about the same as they are both just app launchers. Except the Sammy can run multiple Widgets and supports flash and has an HDMI out.

Now as far as comparing the old ipad with the Xoom, tough luck.

Ipads are over exaggerated. They are basic tablets with a premium price. The Xoom is a premium tablet at a premium price. The new ipad is still not giving you the best that apple can do. And that has always been Steve Jobs strategy.

    • Scorp

Yeah that tab at the price also comes with a 2 year contract. Forget that part? Xoom a premium tablet. Ok. Believe that if you want.

    • Anonymous

Can you link me to a $299 OFF CONTRACT tab…..

  • http://twitter.com/saylor Steve Aylor

All 3 Models are $100 off (the original models) you must add them to your cart to see the lower price.

  • Scorp

This will further hurt RIM’s playbook and the Xoom. Sure the specs pale in comparison to those but a general consumer is more concerned with price. Let’s see 800 for a Xoom or 400 for an iPad… hmmm the Xoom isn’t not twice the price better than the iPad. Not at all.

    • Scorp

Just like millions of people rather spend money on a year old iPhone every time the new one is released than spend money on something made by somebody else even if that made by someone else is technically superior.

      • Alan Smith

Dude, it is not just about the specs. The iPad 2 has 2 cameras, is smaller, lighter, has a dual core chip, and has 65,000 apps. It is about the ecosystem and apps that truly make it. The Xoom has gotten some pretty bad reviews regarding the Android OS (ugly, complicated, and functions more like a desktop than a tablet). Apple has millions (was it 200?) customers signed up with iTunes, app store. Expect a lot of those to buy an iPad 2. I have been waiting for the dual cameras. Awesome device at an even better price than the Xoom. Gee- Xoom sounds like Zune.

      • Scorp

I fully agree. I don’t care about the specs game everyone wants to tout all the time. I was just pointing out that the lower price on the iPad will impact the sales of the playbook and Xoom even though it’s a year older in the same way people are willing to buy older iPhones.

  • Joeschmo

thanks for undercutting my ebay sale

    • Scorp

Should have sold it earlier. Everyone knows that you have to sell your current device before they announce the newer 1 if you want to get the most money. That’s a no brainer.

take off another $50 if you go for the referb model, which still has a 1 year warranty

  • Jbach67

Unfortunately, I can neither justify or afford either. I have an iPhone 4 and a MacBook Pro. If I showed up with an iPad also I think the wife would flip. (Presently experiencing job challenges)

ha, I just bought 1 first gen iPad 64GB + 3G for $480 on eBay, it was just purchase in November! Thanks techies for having to have the newest stuff, I just saved a nice chunk of change.

Yesterday, i expected to see something really new and more powerful, but finally Apple discover something really “common”. The new iPad its only dual-core and both cameras re-styling. ¿Do we need to pay more for a product like that? As BGR says, with an iPad of 399$ is enough to enjoy the web, if we “love” Apple products.

iPad “One” means innovation, iPad 2 means to be competitive with the rest of the Tablets mainly introduced on CES 2011. There are better Tablet choices in the market, for example Motorola Xoom.
