Nokia N8 torture tests give Windows Phone fans a taste of what’s to come [video]

mobile

We’re big fans of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform here at BGR, but we have to admit that the OS is seriously lacking when it comes to top-notch hardware. Even the 4.3-inch display touting HTC HD7, which we thoroughly enjoyed in our review, felt a bit light and plasticky for our taste. Right now the Dell Venue Pro is easily the most solid Windows Phone available, but that will soon change thanks to a little deal Nokia announced earlier this month. Nokia has a laundry list of strengths and hardware is definitely somewhere near the top, as any Nokia fan will attest to. If you haven’t had the chance to play with a recent Symbian phone to see for yourself, which is pretty like if you live in the U.S., Russian site hi-tech.mail.ru put together an N8 torture test video that should help convince you. We can’t say we approve of this Russian Nokia fan’s choice of swimwear  — you’ve been warned, readers — but he definitely helps stress just how solid and durable Nokia handset are. The N8 laughs in the face of a key, a blade, snow, ice and even sand before finally dying after being submerged in seawater. Of course, Nokia’s N8 isn’t a waterproof phone, so we’re not sure why this smartphone sadist chose to submerge it in the first place. Hit the jump for the full video.

I love how you watched a 6 minute video + posted 10 minutes ago 1 minute before the post was released. 2:30 (my time) – 10 min ago (comment posted) – 6 min = 2:14.

Only thing important to me and majority of people is how drop-proof the phone is. I drop my phone several times per week on carpet, hardwood and cement. If I didn’t have the 3GS + case my phone would be done by now :)

  • justin

i really like this phone – and might actually buy one as a 2nd phone to my iphone 4 – just waiting on the price to drop a little more :D

    • sirpaul

Just our of curiosity, what do you need a 2nd phone for? Not being able to effectively sync all info (notes, calendars, contacts, recent text messages and calls, etc.) is kind of bothersome, isn’t it?

      Thanks|!

      • justin

mm not really – if i was using my phone(s) for business use, then yes it would be bothersome but i just want another toy to tinker with – the iphone 4 is getting boring because it is so polished *sigh*

I know its an inanimate object but I was cringing like they were torturing a kitten. Really looking forward to some heavier metal casing phones from Nokia.

“Nokia N8 torture tests give Windows Phone fans a taste of what’s to come”

You mean the desire to destroy your phone?

    • Anonymous

No dummy. Durability. Did you even watch the video? Let me spell that out for you. D-u-r-a-b-i-l-i-t-y. Got it? Take notes if you have to

I know all of these tech blogs have to repost EVERY story that comes around.. but seriously? Was that really supposed to show how tough the N8 is? I can’t think of a single phone I have ever owned that wouldn’t have survived..

Follow up video; N8 survives feather duster!!!1

I had a Nokia 8210 about 10 years ago. I dropped it to the bottom of the pool twice and once in a lake. Let it dry, and it worked like a charm.

Fix the load more entries bug please!

  • KenG

I thought they were going to torture the N8 by porting WP7 to it.

  • Anonymous

Cool video, but now I ask myself “Will it blend?”

  • Anonymous

He was probably bored out of his skull with the bugs of N8 so decided to make a video out of destroying it.

I’m sure he’s a happy Android or iPhone user now.

“We’re big fans of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform here at BGR”

I do believe this is the first time a tech site anywhere on the interweb has stated or admitted to this that wasn’t specifically a WP7 site. Excellent. With engadgets constant barrage of anti-MS sentiments, BGR just redeemed themselves to me.

    Unless that was sarcasm… er…

LOL if you look the key is rounded and not like a real cut key that has sharp edges. Then the blade is stuck out 5 inches and has no force on the screen. Put it out 3 CM and put some force on it!
