Yahoo! email bug affects iPhone as well, not just Windows Phone 7

mobile

Microsoft on Tuesday revealed that a Yahoo! email inefficiency was the culprit of a phantom data bug affecting Windows Phone 7 users. Yahoo! apologized for the bug initially, but later issued a second statement claiming Microsoft’s IMAP implementation was unique on Windows Phone 7 devices, and this was the root cause of the problem. Programmer Rafael Rivera decided to launch an independent investigation into the matter, however, and he posted his findings to his Within Windows blog on Wednesday. In short, Rivera contests that Yahoo!’s IMAP email issues are not confined to Windows Phone 7 devices. He goes on to demonstrate that standard IMAP requests sent to Yahoo! email servers return excess data that falls outside IMAP protocol. Yahoo! has not confirmed or denied these findings.

No, that’s the proposed solution to fix the bug.

        Got it.

This is going to be interesting. If users decide to sue, will Yahoo have to pay for all the “phantom data charges” that people complain about? Will the service providers try to recoup money from Yahoo? Is this a sue-able offense (which would open any coding issue to a lawsuit in the future?) Interesting.

If you use Yahoo! email then you deserve whatever happens to you.

Pretty much my first thought when MS initially said what was causing the issue. Can’t believe anyone uses Yahoo mail. Gmail is 9000 times better.

        Can’t believe people use Hotmail.

Yahoo really sucks. I tried to use a different hosting company but keep yahoo small biz as the email for a client (yes i don’t understand their reasoning either). I could find NOWHERE online, a list of their MX mail servers. Turns out after hours of searching , and after a last ditch effort to tech support. I was told that it would not be possible because their MX servers are “Dynamic” and always changing. So the servers i had jotted down via a simple MX server look up were no good. Yahoo told me that allot of people have complained but that’s how they are set up. Google doesn’t have this problem!!! Well Yahoo! is living in the 90′s still and is bound to go under soon.

Because BGR can’t wait for a reason to throw one up whenever possible…. related or not.

Is this why my iPhone uses 3-4MB data per day, even when I dont use it (I have two YHOO email acts)?

  • Chris

Yahoo mail blows. I stopped using mine when my login wouldn’t work for 4 months. Then all of sudden it started working again. Good riddance.

      Caps Lock?

Yeah, I have to agree that this is Yahoo’s problem. I had some weird issues with their IMAP service on my old HTC Diamond (WinMo) and my Epic 4G (Android). Every now and then, my handsets would download my ENTIRE mailbox, no matter what I set my sync amount to.

I dunno what’s up with their whacked protocol implementations, even their “push” email service appears to run over port 80, forcing you to their email clients.

This will probably go unoticed but it’s not jsut yahoo mail.

Something elsei s going on that is causing data usage over over 75mb at night.

Interesting since AT&T caps data plans. On an unlimited plan it wouldn’t matter as much but this ACTUALLY hurts consumers financially.

    Bullocks! Nothing affects the iPhone!

    • Drew

Umm, you mean “Bollocks”. I’m not from the UK but a co-worker is…

Just stick with gmail and you won’t have to worry about it. Yahoo mail sucks anyway.

So, this means it probably affects Android and any other device as well?

It’s not on my iPhone. It’s is on my wifes WP7. I use my phone all day on 3G and used 400mb this month. Wife has hers turned Off at work and on wifi at home and used 1700 mb. She does nothing but facebook and 1 yahoo email acct.
There is NO way she used 1700 mb.
I have facebook have 7 email Accts and surf the web, watch YouTube videos and more. 5 of those email Accts are yahoo.
