Xbox 360 has biggest year ever in 2010

Gaming

Over five years after the Xbox 360 launched in November 2005, the console powered through the 2010 holiday season — racking up its biggest sales month ever and capping off the biggest year in the console’s history. Microsoft sold 1.9 million Xbox 360 units in December according to NPD Group, providing more icing on Microsoft’s gaming cake following news that the company sold over 8 million Kinect sensors in 60 days. Year-over-year growth came in at 42%, making Xbox the fastest-growing console in 2010. NPD also says consumers spent more money on Xbox 360 than any other game console in 2010 — a whopping $6.2 billion. The top three games for Xbox in 2010 were Call of Duty: Black Ops, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Kinect Sports.

have they made a profit though? Just curious if their cost have gone down enough where this is a lucrative business model now compared to five years ago. I’d like to see those numbers.

They’ve made a profit on it since around 3 years ago or so, maybe longer. Not only that but Kinect was rumored to only cost around $70 to manufacture. You also have to see that microsoft makes the most money (for themselves and 3rd parties) in software and accessory sales out of all of them. They’ve said that over half of their 30+ million Xbox Live accounts are gold.

Correction: The article labeled those games as the top games of december…not for the entire year of 2010

I’m a PS3 fanboy but that’s impressive. I know on my local Craigslist there is 4× as much Xbox stuff for sale than PS3 stuff. I love my PS3 to much to switch. But I was severely tempted to buy an Xbox last year when wal-mart had base model for $200 and you got a $100 wal-mart gift card to go with it.

The problem with the Xbox is that MS charges you for everything. $50, year to play online and to get a 250 gb HD you have to pay $80 – $120 because you have to use an MS hard drive. Just from talking to the people I know more of the Xbox owners have had hardware failures than the PS3 owners. Just my opinion, but it seems like the PS3 is a better deal.

If I had the mentality of an Apple Fanboy, I would say poor people can’t afford Xbox.

I have both 360 and PS3 and like them both but have to say that is very impressive for a 5 year old console. I was very sceptical of Kinect but I have one and it works great. Great job MS

While that’s fantastic, Wii still out sold everything all year and in December alone. I also think my PSWii combo is the best possible gaming combination.

    • lurch

Right on, man. I have everything I need between my PS3 and my Wii.

thats because wii is cheaper and also because its aimed at family, the name “wii” just sounds friendly…

Halo takes skill. imo the battle system is what makes a good multiplayer FPS game. CoD is generic FPS with trinkets.

      • BoyRetardedReport

faaail. Halo is stupid and full of noobs who jump 50 feet in the air and spray you with their automatic plasma guns. how is that skill?

      • http://twitter.com/blaquekyd Charles Gibbs

well you are speaking on people playing and exploiting glitches. im speaking on people who play the game as it was intended. And online community cant really be used as a point in a debate about gameplay.

      • Hate, Y U No Love?

Both CoD and Halo are overrated trash.

    shit i own all three..

My great frustration with Microsoft is that in theory they have an ideal media platform but have utterly failed to capitalize on it through te idiocy of microsoft points and xbox live gold.

If I want to rent a film, I do it through any of the numerable services that tell me how much it costs in real money and let me pay direct on my credit card. The irony being that I do this usually after I’ve noticed that a film is available to rent on my xbox.

Equally, the need to funnel users toward gold membership has had the effect of denying content to non-gold members. So here in the uk, the BBC is unable to provide iplayer access, as it would effectively become a part of a paid service. Meanwhile sony’s free online platform has signed content providers exclusively – lovefilm (the uk Netflix equivalent) and Mubi (foreign films on demand) both offer streaming on a PS3.

The sad thing is that this is so typical of Microsoft these days. Once again it’s going to wake up one morning to discover itself behind the curve and having squandered a massive headstart.

At first the idea of paying for online services seemed messed up but I totally dig it now, you get tons of features that you will inevitably have to pay for on the PS3. I have the PS3 in my household and I personally use the xbox. Aesthetically xbox is much better, even the Netflix looks better than the PS3 and the online community is arranged and catered to much better. Xbox is def flawed with the Microsoft point system but all in all, it’s a great system.
