Motorola Xoom hands-on [Video]

CES

Ready for some quality time with Motorola’s new Xoom tablet? The folks from the big glowing red M sat down with us this afternoon and provided a bit of a sneak peak into the world of the Xoom tablet. While the Android 3.0-based device wasn’t running a fully functional version of the new OS, we did have a chance to get a sneak peak at some of the upcoming device’s capabilities. Much of what this thing can do is tied directly to what Android 3.0 can do, which is to say… it can do a whole lot. Video conferencing, integrating Skype, tabbed browsing, and that’s just the beginning. Moto re-iterated Verizon’s claim that all devices initially sold with the 3G chip will be hardware-upgradeable to the new 4G LTE chips as soon as they become available. All it will take is a quick trip to your local Verizon Store to have the device serviced. Ahh, if only all devices were that future-proof. Hang tight for our video to upload — it’s coming!

Ill be able to post my own video soon lol.

I think its taking so long to post the video because the xoom has nothing to do with at&t or apple, therefore its on the bottom of their list.

They want the store reps to update a piece of hardware on it? As in actually touch the hardware? I absolutely love taking apart and fixing things but when I was scolded for setting up a DUN connection on a customers laptop to get their card to work and telling them how to repair the cracked screen of their BB I’M amazed they’ll want us to mess with hardware.”the hinge is jammed with a visible piece of fuz I can remove with tweezers.. yea we’ll just warranty it out instead as per Verizon guidelines” but then again we also have customers wanting phones swapped out because the paint on the letters is wearing down “ma’am you’ve sent 15thousand text messages…” “Verizon be makin’ some crappy phones yo” “Verizon didn’t manufacture your phone, LG did” “it says Verizon on it right hurr. Yall is wack imma go to Walmart and get me straight talk they be cheaper than this mess.”

Nice long shoutout to Gizmodo on the video LOL

I saw all of this already in a better presentation wtf. I waited all this time for this? Funny how in every presentation they shout out Gizmodo. I love the subtle jab at crapple.

How is it a demo ? its a video .. also the guy talking must be hallucinating thinking this is the first dual core tablet .. ask him to go check BlackBerry PlayBook

    • Anonymous

The guy talking is not the only one hallucinating. Both the Playbook and Xoom have yet to be released so neither are the first dual core tablet. Remember all the broken promises from last years CES regarding tablets…

I think its Motorola that is hallucinating because I’ve heard other references to Xoom being the first dual core. Its not even the only dual core at CES and not that I would recommend buying it, but the G-tab is dual core as well with Tegra.

So glad I didn’t wait for the video to upload last night. This is the same video of videos that every other tech site had up 2 days ago. Still can’t wait for the Xoom though.

I am getting a little worry that the units only have demo videos. Has there been a pure live demo of the Xoom? Is the software not fleshed out which would mean more waiting?

  • zps

i am loving the look of this! cannot wait. i think i may have to consider a mobile hotspot this year. not getting locked into device specific data contracts.

    Glorified video player…more vaporware

  • dbeezy

playbook smokes this – playbook multitaskinig, ui, and hardware smoek this

anyone else think honeycomb looks arhcaic

    • LeeC

I don’t know how you can say the QNX OS smokes Android. Yes, it’s a great-looking OS, albeit heavily influenced by webOS, but have you ever owned a BlackBerry and waited for an OS update? My God, it’s like watching a glacier move across the desert. Having been a BB owner, including the Storm, my move to Android has been pure joy, so I don’t know what looks archaic to you, but all I see is the future.

    Simply beautiful than the Ipad.

  • ThisTabBlows

this thing is gross. still super impressed with the playbook.

There’s a lot of lag on his swiping. Sometimes it doesn’t even swipe. I guess this is a feature of Android.

also a few times in the video the keyboard came up and starting entering text without him entering a textfield and entering keys on the keyboard. WTF?

btw Xoom sounds like Zune. Wonder if sales will also be similar?

That interface looks so clunky and laggy

  • http://twitter.com/cefranco2 Carlos Franco

yeah, i’m impressed by this tabet. More so then the Playbook, seriously, calendar support with BB tethered only??!, anyway. the Xoom looks the part. I cant wait for an official review from BGR to really put it through some real world tests. I’m finally getting a tablet this year, we’ll see how this stacks up to the Ipad 2…

    I want one

  • Music_mugger

Is Motorola going to do the same with the Xoom as it has done in the past with it’s top of the range gadgets. Drop it, and leave the customer hanging without support? Moto seems to be pretty good at that, I refer to the Z8

  • Anonymous

Hands on?!? Yeah right. Everything they were showing off was a video. Why can’t we see the actual interface being used?

I am getting tired of these tech companies saying we have the next best thing but here is just a video of the interface. Demo the actual device.

If it is not ready to demo do not announce it.

  • Kroty

This is very interesting to me, but I’m very interested to know how the battery will perform with heavy usage of video, music, game play and such. I know I’m always having to carefully manage my Droid X battery. Also hopefully the android app market will improve as it is currently lacking

  • Slackjaw43

The demo is kind of BS. I like the demonstrator pretending to interact with the videos. How does a product when best of CES when it is not even operational? No one can really say how responsive the OS is yet or how well the multi-touch functions work. I wonder if the hardware will be ready and have to wait for Honeycomb to be ready.

They may as well have given Best of Show to Duke Nukem Forever…
