‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ sales surpass $1 billion

Gaming

Activision announced Tuesday the third major record-breaking milestone achieved by its recent smash hit, Call of Duty: Black Ops. The latest addition to Activision’s Call of Duty franchise first set a new launch-day sales record when it racked up $360 million in first-day sales. Then Activision bested its previous five-day sales record when Black Ops did $650 million in sales over its first five days of availability. Now, Activision has announced that its massively popular first-person shooter pulled in over $1 billion in less than a month. “In all of entertainment, only Call of Duty and “Avatar” have ever achieved the billion dollar revenue milestone this quickly,” said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick in a statement. “This is a tribute to the global appeal of the Call of Duty franchise, the exceptional talent at Treyarch and the hundreds of extraordinary people across our many Call of Duty studios including Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer that work tirelessly on the franchise. Our ability to provide the most compelling, immersive entertainment experience, and enhance it with regular, recurring content that delivers hundreds of hours of audience value, has allowed Call of Duty to continue to set sales and usage records.” Hit the break for the full press release from Activision.

Call of Duty®: Black Ops™ Surpasses $1 Billion in Sales Worldwide

Over 600 Million Hours Logged Playing Call of Duty: Black Ops Game Continues to Set Entertainment Records

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 21, 2010 /PRNewswire/ – Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that Call of Duty: Black Ops continues to set sell-through records crossing the $1 billion mark in sales worldwide since its launch in November, according to internal Activision estimates.

In its first five days alone, the game sold more than $650 million worldwide, outpacing theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars, according to internal Activision estimates and boxofficemojo.com.  The game exceeded Activision’s previous five-day worldwide record of $550 million set by last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare® 2.

To date, more than 600 million hours have been logged playing Call of Duty: Black Ops since the game launched on November 9, 2010.  According to Microsoft, the average player logs on more than once a day and plays for more than one hour each time.  Over half of that time is spent playing online with and against friends, illustrating the unique social characteristics of the game.

“In all of entertainment, only Call of Duty and “Avatar” have ever achieved the billion dollar revenue milestone this quickly,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.  ”This is a tribute to the global appeal of the Call of Duty franchise, the exceptional talent at Treyarch and the hundreds of extraordinary people across our many Call of Duty studios including Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer that work tirelessly on the franchise.  Our ability to provide the most compelling, immersive  entertainment experience, and enhance it with regular, recurring content that delivers hundreds of hours of audience value, has allowed Call of Duty to continue to set sales and usage records.”

Kotick continued, “This extraordinary milestone was achieved  because of  the tens of millions of passionate Call of Duty players around the world.  Global audiences have logged billions of hours online with Call of Duty games on Xbox LIVE, the Playstation Network and on personal computers.  This unique level of community engagement has enabled Call of Duty to become one of the world’s most engaged online communities.

Call of Duty continues to rewrite not just the record books, but also the rules of interactive entertainment,” says Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “Even more remarkable than the number of units sold is the number of hours people are playing the game together online which are unprecedented. Call of Duty is more than a game, it’s a true community.

they had 2K11 for that price on Saturday… awesome price for a game

I feel kind of bad I bought this game not only because is it NOT as good as Infinity Ward’s MW2 but Activision has tried to sabotage these guys (Infinity Ward) and fired the co-founders and then threw Treyarch in the mix to do this and it’s not the same. They will be going to court in May to settle this but Activision is evil.

    • Bostlabs

Treyarch has been involved with the Call of Duty franchise for quite some time. IW and Treyarch would release a COD game opposite of each other. IW one year and 3arc teh next year. I loved MW2, but Black Ops tops it in my book.

KILLED my ps3. And many others as well.

awesome for xbox… girls shoot people too

  • lolcat

All the CODs suck. They don’t balance them so they aren’t good competitive multiplayer games. It’s too bad too because I rocked the crap outta COD4 although it’s pretty easy to when wallhacking is built into the game (UAV and hitblips)

You’d think that since they’re raking in money, hand over fist, that they’re pony up for some dedication servers.

    • Aaron

      dedication servers?

      • uDummy

You know, like when there’s that special someone so you call and request they play Peter Gabriel’s ‘In Your Eyes’ while sending a sweet shout-out to the one you love. thats romance son.

      • trollasaurus

        nice troll.

And yet they have not fixed the countless issues that plague the PS3 version. My Playstation locks up multiple times a night from this game, I get randomly disconnected from hosts… I’d rather go back to MW2.

  • 1adonis1

Damn that’s good for them. Glad to see they haven’t fixed their server issues and that I get to pay 15 bucks for a 5 map pack early next year! Way to give back assholes.

  • Chris

I guess people aren’t reading that the game is unplayable for PS3 yet again? Its like they get your $60 and everything is fine. Wait a couple weeks and the game is laden with glitches and lag while the game maker just shrugs and blames in on everyone’s internet connection. Nothing will change except the name of the company selling you the snake oil. They will spend about a hundred bucks out of the billion$ to build an even laggier sequal. Yet still the nerdy sheep will line up at 12am to buy this garbage. The fact that you cannot return it has a lot to do with its sales figures. This was the final straw for me with playstation. Getting an Xbox after the holidays. Free isn’t ever what its cracked up to be.

xbox live has its moment too….

it is a shame though that there arent any good solid honest companies left. google and microsoft are about the largest & closest that i can think of…. sad

    • aaron

“and blames in on everyone’s internet connection” lol

I cant believe i would consider hardcore FPS players as “nerds”

      • Chris

If you go to buy a video game @ 12am, yes you are a nerd.
If you grammer police comments on a blog, yes you are a nerd. Sorry bro but you are a tool. When you finally discover the touch of a woman feels like things may change nerdbomber. Until then enjoy the doritos and redbull fatty.

  • Emai

Millions of people are about to find out this game is broken.

  • Warren

You’re a fucking loser is you buy these garbage games.

    • aaron

      good one……

  • InspectorGadget80

I guess this means more crappy same Call of Duty again next NOV.

  • Djdevant

I still like BF2BC better. It just seems more realistic.

I really, really wish I could take my 60 dollars back, but fortunately for the poor, poor game companies I’m not allowed to do that.

Blacks Ops is easily the biggest let down, biggest waste of 60 dollars I’ve ever in my entire life.

Just played Bad Company 2 for the first time (with Vietnam expansion) and I can’t believe I never picked this game up before.

It’s everything you want in a FPS and more.

Activision can rot in hell, and Treyach along with them. I’ll never buy another product from Treyarch.

    • aaron

“I really, really wish I could take my 60 dollars back, but fortunately for the poor, poor game companies I’m not allowed to do that.”

      Yeah, huh?

  • Dan A

Game it self is great. When it works. However that’s a rarity. I’m at the point where I’d rather just get my money back. And I’m a big cod fan.

Btw it’s the ps3 version of course.

  • I want my $60 back!

Black Ops could be a really great game but there are far too many bugs(on PS3 at least) as everyone has already said. The host migration issue makes it practically unplayable although it’s not as bad with recent fixes. I can’t believe how horrible the lag is. Even worse than MW2 for me.

  • Sinohmi

I must be the only one waiting for Battlefield 3

  • uDummy

I used to think people who said, “Boycott [Insert Company Name Here]” were silly… but after reading some of the crap that comes from Activision’s CEO’s mouth… I can honestly say I try to avoid all Activision games. Its too bad… all this revenue just going to make them push their agenda further.
Sony fanboys make fun of Xbox Live players for having to pay some low-maintenance fee per year… yeah, what will you do when companies like Activision start making you pay per game per month? (which, by the way, was Sony’s vision way back in the PS2 days before MicroSoft killed that idea w/ XBL!!)

  • Noway

Do not buy this game. I went back to mw2. The frame rate is so bad it looks like the game is constantly lagging. The game play is also not accurate. You’ll be running and knife someone who is facing the other way and they kill you.

Read reviews online. This game is a turd with a good name.

Since I couldn’t return mine back to gamestop…. I shredded it and sent it to activision cod (cash on delivery , but I thought the pun was great).

    Just my 2 cents….

  • Zay1

wtf are yall talking about? Black Ops go hard….i dont have any problems…Xbox live is cool wit me and folks hack that shit all day.

  • http://twitter.com/JoshuaMcCaffrey Joshua McCaffrey

XBox Live is where it’s at. Sorry that your Sony execs don’t see it fit to have Dedicated Servers that can support the extreme number of users on at any given moment. I have a PS3 also, I even bought the PS3 version of the title…yet it sat still wrapped in my drawer for 3 weeks and now is back at Gamestop as a Return.

Plain and simple it boils down to this….XBox users ‘pay’ to play, hence the better gameplay and updated Servers they play on. PS3 users are using the service for ‘free’ and in-turn will not receive the ‘level’ of care that the XBox users will receive from their counterpart(Microsoft).

Not to mention that the level of gameplay is much much better on XBox then it is on PS3. Anyone feels the way I do hit me up on XBox… iPwnNubz4Fun COD4LIFE! Black Ops is AWESOME, only campers don’t like it
