Microsoft expects to sell 5 million Kinect sensors this year

Gaming

One of the most highly anticipated accessories among gamers may now be one of the most highly anticipated accessories among Microsoft investors as well. Microsoft’s Don Mattrick told Bloomberg News in an interview that the company is raising its holiday season Kinect sales projections from 3 million to 5 million units. According to the executive, that would make Kinect Microsoft’s biggest Xbox product launch in company history. Microsoft Kinect, which goes on sale November 4th, is a new type of gaming accessory that will allow players to use their bodies to control functions within a video game. Kinect’s sensor bar includes a series of cameras that observe players’ movements and then translate those movements into commands. The sensor will be sold as a stand-alone accessory or as part of a bundle with either a game or the Xbox 360 console itself.

    What a fiasco for Microsoft.

Two straight E3s they were caught faking their motion control demos. And they have been desperately trying to keep gaming sites from reviewing Kinetic because the reactions are so bad before the launch.

This is what Microsoft’s gets for sitting around for years while Nintendo and Sony worked on their own motion control tech and then rushing out and buying shoddy Eye Toy style motion controls from a company both Nintendo and Sony passed on.

Meh…I might be interested when I can use Kinect to play halo or COD.

Whoa – $750 million in revenue in 6 weeks. That’s a $6.5 billion annual revenue stream. Impressive!

I’m guessing a lot of flippers are going to buy a few, see how the shortage is for Christmas and try and sell it for $300. I remember the Wii situation being like this for a few years, I just bought a black one for $40 a few weeks ago, boy have things turned around.

I don’t see them even selling a million of these. Times have change and I don’t see too many people paying all that money for a freggin camera.

Microsoft has been drinking grandpa’s cough medicine. Are all the people who bought a Wii and never play it going to run out and buy a Kinect? And this year as in…2 months?

i was all ready to get this until i found out that it’s not compatible with netflix.i really wanted to control my netflix queue with a wave of my hand and pause, rewind and fast forward movies with voice comands.seems like microsoft is trying to pull an Apple by forcing people to buy video content from their Zune marketplace if they want to use their Kinect.that really sucks.i think ill just save my money until a netflix compatible Kinect comes out or maybe ill just get the sony move.

I’m guessing when this first comes out on the shelves peoples curiosity will fuel sales. Once its out for a few months the novelty will die off and it’ll just be another overpriced add on. Considering some of the bad feedback its gotten from the tech press I’d be surprised if M$ sold half the numbers they projected. Steve Ballmer better be careful that this product doesn’t nosedive as bad as the Kin or it could spell the end of him as a CEO.

tech sites’ commentators used to (and still) say the same thing about the iphone and ipad

I would bet not a single person who commented has even used or demoed this but already consider it a failure and won’t sell..

I will be picking one of these bad biys up tomorrow bundled with my new shiney black xbox!

They have to say 5 million or else the game developers won’t have a big enough market to make money.

So it a chicken and egg type bluff. Nothing really to do with actual expectations from the retail perspective
