T-Mobile’s ’4G’ network now available in over 75 cities

Breaking

T-Mobile let us know that they have some pretty big news, just a day after Sprint finally blanketed New York City with 4G coverage. As of tonight, T-Mobile has over 75 live HSPA+ markets which covers an estimated 200 million people. T-Mobile insists on calling it 4G even though it’s not technically a 4G network, but with speeds up to 21Mbps (and T-Mobile looking to bump that to 42Mbps in 2011 and even 84 and 168Mbps after that), we’re not sure it really matters, especially to consumers. Neville Ray, CTO for T-Mobile said:

The footprint of our 4G service is not something that competitors are going to match anytime soon, and starting today, we will begin marketing our network advantage with TV commercials advertising ‘America’s Largest 4G Network’ from T-Mobile.

Chicago, IL, Colorado Springs, CO, Ft. Wayne, IN, Louisville, KY, and Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington, NC have just be lit up with “4G” for your web-browsing, file-downloading pleasure. Full press release is after the break!

BELLEVUE, Wash.Nov. 2, 2010T-Mobile USA, Inc. today announced the expansion of its 4G mobile broadband network to six additional metro areas, and introduced two new products designed to tap into its 4G service. Tomorrow marks the national retail availability of the T-Mobile® myTouch® 4G and T-Mobile’s first 4G netbook, the Dell™ Inspiron™ Mini 10 4G. With typical download speeds that are on par with or faster than competing 4G technologies, and service availability in 75 metropolitan markets throughout the United States, the T-Mobile network now offers a super-fast, next generation mobile broadband experience to more people than any other wireless network in the country.

“4G is about performance and today T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network is delivering 4G speeds that match and often beat WiMAX and are comparable to what early LTE will deliver. Our 4G network is capable of theoretical speeds up to 21Mbps and we have seen average download speeds approaching 5 Mbps on our myTouch 4G phone in some cities with peak speeds of nearly 12 Mbps.  Further, independent reviewers have seen average download speeds on our webConnect Rocket between 5 and 8 Mbps with peak speeds up to 8-10Mbps,” said Neville Ray, chief technology officer, T-Mobile USA. “The footprint of our 4G service is not something that competitors are going to match anytime soon, and starting today, we will begin marketing our network advantage with TV commercials advertising ‘America’s Largest 4G Network’ from T-Mobile.”

The “America’s Largest 4G Network” message will be communicated in an iconic, arresting and memorable way through national TV and digital advertisements that will begin airing today on major TV networks and cable TV stations, including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and TNT, and appearing on websites, including AOL, MSN, Amazon.com and easily viewable on T-Mobile’s YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/tmobile.

T-Mobile expanded the availability of its 4G network to six additional metropolitan areas, including Chicago, Ill.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Louisville, Ky.; and Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington, N.C. T-Mobile customers with 4G devices in 75 metropolitan areas can now enjoy faster Web browsing, uninterrupted video streaming and quicker downloads at no additional cost.

“Consumers do not understand the technical alphabet soup of technologies involved in 4G, but for our purposes we define WiMAX, LTE and HSPA+ as 4G technologies,” said Chris Nicoll, distinguished research fellow, Yankee Group. “HSPA+ is evolving a far more ambitious and long-term road map than was originally envisioned.  T-Mobile is using an upgrade to HSPA+ to deliver faster 4G speeds today and is quickly bringing a number of HSPA+ devices to market that greatly enhance the mobile data experience for its customers.”

In addition to the network expansion, T-Mobile continues to broaden its lineup of products that tap into its 4G network. Available today is the stylish and powerful T-Mobile myTouch 4G smartphone. Designed to access faster speeds on T-Mobile’s 4G network, the myTouch 4G also includes a front-facing camera for Video Chat through Yahoo! Messenger or QIK, HD Camcorder with Screen Share by Twonky™, 5-megapixel camera with flash, Android 2.2, and additional exclusive T-Mobile features such as Genius Button™, powered by Dragon Dictation from Nuance Communications, myModes and Faves Gallery™. The myTouch 4G is appearing in a national ad campaign beginning today and will be the featured device at T-Mobile retail stores nationwide this holiday season.

Also available today is the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 4G, T-Mobile’s first netbook to feature built-in access to T-Mobile’s 4G mobile broadband network. It also includes Windows 7 Starter Edition — Microsoft Corp.’s latest operating system — and a fast processor for easy Web surfing, communication, photo sharing and multimedia playback in one small, ultraportable device.

“With an upgrade path that continues to provide room for considerable speed enhancements,     T-Mobile’s 4G network is purpose-built for continued growth. We are now on pace to increase our 4G footprint — reaching 200 million people by the end of this year — with plans to offer 42Mbps theoretical speeds in 2011,” added Ray. “As customer demand for wireless data increases, T-Mobile is well-positioned to compete based on the speed, breadth and evolution path of our mobile broadband service.”

Additional 4G products already available from T-Mobile and designed to take advantage of the faster 4G service include the T-Mobile webConnect® Rocket™ 2.0 laptop stick and the high-powered T-Mobile G2™ with Google™ smartphone. T-Mobile’s 4G smartphones, the myTouch 4G and the T-Mobile G2, are powered by the Android 2.2 operating system, which provides tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing capabilities. Beginning this holiday season, T-Mobile will offer a Tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing service plan that allows customers to use their smartphone as wireless modem for connecting laptops and other devices to the Internet through the T-Mobile mobile broadband network. Customers can add the Tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing plan to their Web – Unlimited $30/monthly plan for an additional $14.99/month.

Product Availability

T-Mobile plans to offer a selection of affordable data plans for both smartphones and broadband products, with smartphone data plans starting as low as $10/month. Someone should sue them for false advertising.

You can’t name a standard for a generation of technology. When compared to their 3G network, HSPA+ is 4G.

And seriously whether it is 4G or not; if it looks like 4G, and acts like 4G who’s to say it’s not 4G.

    • combatwombat

      You are a retard.

      • Darth V.

And you smell. Who’s keeping track?

      • http://twitter.com/Gambler0 Cody R.

        And your name is stupid.

    • Anonymous

It is false advertising…they have swiss cheese coverage sporadically in some major cities. FAIL FAIL FAIL!!!

      • Anonymous

Bring that up with Sprint for starting it with a 4G that isn’t even that much faster than current 3G, nor cover most metro areas yet either.

T-Mobile is being truthy in this advertising because you actually do get more speed than any average 3G network without officially qualifying by the standards.

    • Guest

Can we sue you for that ugly mug?

We should probably sue Verizon for advertising their new network as 4G when it really isn’t either while we’re at it.

      • Spandeez

Oh wait, someone else beat them to LTE, Metro has already launched more LTE than VZW. HSPA+ FTW!

  • Nick L

I’m pretty sure no American provider has a true 4G network available yet. Sprint’s isn’t technically either.

    • http://twitter.com/Gambler0 Cody R.

Verizon will be first. Hopefully people will jump from Sprint and Tmobile to Verizon.

      • David

I have nothing against VZW! They have a great network and decent customer service. But Tmo is takin an existing network and getting speeds as fast and faster than WIMAX. And preach all day about LTE having theoretical speeds x times faster that HSPA+, but as much money as VZW and AT&T put into the networks I’m sure they will make it just fast enough to make a claim of fastest network. There is no way they will just let it fly.

Among the dumber comments to date.

Why would you “hope,” that more people congest Verizon’s network and slow down everyone’s speeds?

You must be a commissioned sales rep of theirs to be able to formulate that kind of opinion.

      • http://twitter.com/Gambler0 Cody R.

Everyone already has verizon in my area so it can’t get any slower, not that its slow. Dumbass.

      • Dollar

VZW will be first with what? The LTE network that they’re preparing to unveil technically isn’t 4G either. It’s considered 3.9G just like Sprint’s WiMAX.

      • Drew

ITU has laid down the law and NOBODY on the face of the Earth has deployed a true 4G network that lives up to the STANDARD of 4G (LTE Advanced and WiMax 2) nor is there any even ratified at this moment.

    • Ontopofthegame

Sprint is using 4g technology hspa+ is 3g. Wimax 2 will blow hspa+ out of the water

      • Tech Nerd

No one has 4g yet. And Wimax 2 will blow hspa away at 330 mbps, around 33 times faster then sprints so called current 4g.

  • David

Hell yeah, Raleigh. Great news! I pick up my MT4G tomorrow and am excited to test the speeds. Can’t wait. Good looking out Tmo. Glad I stuck it out.

  • cmilette

why don’t they fix their 3G market first before they start 4G?
i’m getting tired of my friends calling me from their boring gsm t-fail phones and having their calls dropped.

    • David

I just read that HSPA+ is backwards compatible, so it should help with your friends problem as well.

    • Darth V.

      Refrain from speaking further.

    • http://twitter.com/Gambler0 Cody R.

Because they have to have the highest standard so we don’t get farther behind the rest of the world.

    • tmoracer

Have you seen HSPA+ in action? I am guessing not. With the My touch 4g you can teather your device (using Wi-Fi I might add) View a television show on hulu, open a second browser and surf the web, then take a call from a friend, all at the same time! Can Sprint or Verizon do this? The answer is no. The worst network? Not true either, take a ride in Colorado at Keystone, go night skiing and get into a Gondola and make a call, watch everyones else expressions! It is entertaining. Spring charges $10 to get 4g coverage and it is how fast? Not very I see people with EVO’s and they like the phone, they hate the service, and they cant stand the Customer Care. For all the iPhone users, do not try any of this your phone will explode!

      • B.game

Funny you mention keystone Colorado. I was just there this past summer for a week and never once had a problem making a call from my Verizon Blackberry (and yes we rode the Gondola, we had little kids with us). Now my sisters iPhone? Well, lets just say she had to use my phone to call into the office. I know ATT is different from T-mobile but wouldn’t they use the same signal?

  • Tim6253

While I don’t agree with t mobile waiting til now to label this 4G, I see their case for it. Verizon stated that HSPA+ was an option they considered before deciding on LTE. I say if the speed is there, call it what matches everybody else. I am generally no t mobile fan, but if they can get those speeds to that many people by the end of the year, good for them. It will be good for android. I will enjoy my Sprint 4G, if it ever gets to Arkansas…they can enjoy their HSPA+. Interestingl enough, Arkansas already has some HSPA+ coverage, with probably more coming by years end. It is widely believed that Sprint and t mobile will one day merge, so this will only be a good thing in the long run.

  • Darth V.

T-Mobile posed to take over the Universe. Where’s your Jedi army to save you now? lol

I’ve heard the debate that most 4G networks are even functional and I’ve heard that T-Mobiles HSPA+ is as good as anything currently called 4G. I’ve heard that its clocking way fast, so screw it. Let’s call it 4G, especially if I don’t have to pay an extra $10 a month to get it.

Come to the Darkside. We have better customer service than you smucks using AT&T and Verizon anyway. Now we got 75 Cities of pure unadulterated blistering mind-blogging 4G…sorta. lol

  • http://twitter.com/Whyoh Why-oh

I Have Sprint and If They Are Calling Wimax 4G then I Guess T-mobile Can Call HSPA+ 4G (Im Getting 10 Mbps here in New York on Wimax)…

    • Ontopofthegame

Sprint’s 4g is faster! Unlimited and has there entire 3g network to fall back on. What does tmobile have? Sprint has 2 phones already with front facing cameras for video chat Epic and Evo 4g! What does tmobile have? Clear has over 10 different devices that can provide internet in your home or on the go for up to 8 devices through usb, modem, or hotspot. What does tmobile have? that ugly pos usb rocket? tmobile has NOTHING but false advertisement and network outages!

      • Anonymous

Right. They have WiMax which is marginally faster than HSPA+, costs an extra $10, but available in fewer areas, and whoa, if you turn on your 4G radio expect your phone to die in under 4 hours. Yeah, baby!

      • Ontopofthegame

The Epic 4g actually gets better battery life on 4g look it up DA its on antech under the fastest android phone google it!

  • Anonymous

I really like tmobile but the problem is they have very little coverage. I think they should focus on expanding phone coverage first

  • Anonymous

    …when did tmobile get a 4G network…

  • Trooth

Will TMobile call LTE 5G when they upgrade to that?

    • Postasguest

      Why not?

  • Alwin Mitchelll

I have the G2 and my house mate has the EVO and he gets on average 1-2MB faster than I do in the house but outside I am consistently faster than him.

He has clocked a high speed of 11MB and I have had 9.8MB and this is in the tri-state area, which covers the areas I am always in…good enough for me.

  • Anonymous

    LETS GO T-MOBILE!!!!

just make sure you work on expanding your coverage more as you turn on the lights to your “4G” network.

  • Anonymous

I can’t argue with T-Mo’s strategy. Why bother spending loads of dough to build out in rural areas when they can concentrate on large metro areas and reap a larger benefit for their capital? I appreciate VZW’s coverage, but it’s pointless for people like me who spend 90% of my time in cities or along major interstates. Oh, and they have crappy throughput. My wife’s Droid gets better coverage, but my downloads are easily 5x faster.

  • http://zedomax.com/blog zedomax

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE TMOBILE and I have a G2 Phone which gets 1.5Mbps download speeds on HSDPA and their upload is near also 1.5mbps. BUT, I’ve got a Clearwire Rover 4G mifi, which does 5-6mbps download speeds, upload not as fast but downloads are “real” 4G speeds although they haven’t officially launched in SF yet. Wait until clearwire officially launches, it will blow T-Mobile out of the water.

But, TMobile’s new falsely-advertised “4G” is much faster than Verizon and Sprint’s 3G, also which I have a droid 2 and a HTC Evo 4G, both which get less than 1Mbps in the same location. But also, Sprint 4G is same as clearwire, it’s gonna be superfast when Sprint’s 4G gets official here in SF.

    hope that helps.

“Can I connect to 4G now?” – I see the Verizon spokesperson intimidated by me who gets “all” networks.

P.S. and yeah, AT&T is the worst caz it obviously drops calls, nevermind its super-spotty data service.

  • Anonymous

You obviously know nothing about the iPhone.

  • JBalance

T-Mobile has big plans to expand their current 3g and 4g networks, we will all see a different side of T-Mobile in the coming year. Watch out Verizon and At&t T-Mobile WILL be expanding their coverage at a blistering rate next year, That I can promise you, no one cares about the people they serve more than T-Mobile, I have witnessed it first hand. :)

  • Shariarrana

    Great Coverage Indeed!!!

  • Rage77love1
