HTC EVO 4G hacked to support 60 FPS video

Hardware

fps30evo-60.

HTC EVO 4G owners disappointed that the graphics on their premiere handset were deliberately capped at 30 FPS by HTC should head over to xda-developers and give the folks over there a hearty thank you. With some clever coding, this software cap has been lifted and select EVO 4G handsets can achieve up to 60 FPS performance in games and other graphic intensive applications. This fix needs some tweaking as tearing, v-sync issues, and other graphics anomalies are present after uncapping. The fix is also limited to handsets with hardware 0003 and an Epson display (how to check your display courtesy of PPC geeks). The devs are working on these limitations and interested parties should keep a keen eye on the very active thread for developments as they occur.

Or you could get an iPhone 4… sorry, I had to ;)

We could.. but then we wouldn’t have the EVO ;-)

The iPhone is having its own share of problems.. Look a few threads up.. Then when the Moto X drops it will too..

I’m not sure what the issue is with HTC and graphics limitions? I seem to remember dealing with this on a past Windows Mobile phone that had less than optimized drivers. HTC could just hire some of the XDA folks to optmize their phones and everyone wins.

Come on HTC. You have one of the most powerful phones currently in existance, why hold it back?

I assume this probably sucks more juice from the battery?

Most phones these days operate at 60 fps, including the Hero and Eris. The battery is not the issue. Lazy programming by HTC programmers is the problem.

This is now my second HTC phone (I owner the Hero before the EVO), and both of these phones have their fair share of problems. HTC’s quality is highly overrated.

Ok, maybe it’s not THE issue, but wondering if it is AN issue. I mean, if EVO owners employ this hack, can they expect battery life to drop a bit?
I dunno.. just asking.. seems like there’d be some kind of penalty.

Google wanted to wait until 2.2 to enable the FPS upgrade, as well as Wireless N. Obviously some folks did not realize this.

Why was it limited in the first place?? I wonder if it has something to do with the HD out??
