myTouch 3G Slide coming to T-Mobile on June 2nd… for $180

General

tmobile-mytouch-slide

Today, T-Mobile announced that the fabled myTouch 3G Slide will be available to the masses starting on June 2nd. Despite the fact that the 3G Slide is nowhere near the most advanced Android smartphone on the market, we know for a fact that a lot of readers are really looking forward to picking one up from T-Mo. There is just one problem…for some unknown reason, T-Mobile is going to ask customers to pay in blood $179.99 for the Slide after a $50 MIR. For those of you keeping track — and we know you are — that’s only $20 cheaper than Sprint’s EVO 4G which launches 4 days later for $199.99. The question is: Are we the only ones who think $180 is way too much to pay for the myTouch 3G Slide, or are the folks at T-Mobile smarter than we are?

It’s T-Mobile fail to realizing that they aren’t the only ones carrying Android anymore. Why Get this for $180 when you can get an EVO or Incredible for only slightly more?

    • http://willentrekin.com Will Entrekin

      Because neither is on T-Mobile.

      • AL

Why would you even want to be on T-Mobile? When you can have the largest network in Big Red.

      • T-MOBILE_REP

Yeah but its too expensive and their 3g is super slow!

      • Mitch

I’d somewhat agree with you, but VZW is MUCH more expensive.

T-Mobile is a fantastic carrier for those who don’t travel much and live in a solid service area. The same can’t be said about Sprint, where even if you have full service it drops calls like a BAMF.

    • me

Because T Mobiles data and voice plains are cheaper than VZW?

  • http://robert.aitchison.org Robert Aitchison

What about the real price? Is it still going to be $400 as was rumored before or is it going the be even more?

  • StevenGlansburg

Who would really want this? There are reports of a new sidekick made by HTC running Android that is basically the EVO spec wise with a physical keyboard in the works. The price on that will be laughable as well Im sure.

    • http://robert.aitchison.org Robert Aitchison

Any G1 user will be interested in this, we are REALLY overdue for an upgrade.

      • FML

According to Tmobile, your upgrade plan is “leave us and go to Verizon or Sprint because we don’t give a fuck about you.”

I’m not joking, this was on Robert Dotson’s official twitter page.

      • StevenGlansburg

I saw it on tmonews.com a couple days ago. check it out. Its only a rumor, but it sounds cool for sure..

    • Mitch

      That sounds awesome.

      Seriously.

  • http://rossmanngroup.com Louis Rossmann

    name recognition.

The mytouch and G1 were the first Android devices to receive some widespread joe blow consumer adoption. Half the android based phones I see are either the G1/Mytouch, or the droid from motorola.

It may be worse, but people will buy the mytouch based on brand recognition.

  • SDreamer

That’s a bit of a rip off with the EVO being at 200$, but this is a good case to show how spoiled we are on NA soil. We’re always expecting these phones to be priced low and cheap and respectful of the tier of phones out. When we look at the full price, I think it’s justified, but when we look at subsidized price we think it’s a rip off. I’m all of cheap phones, but lets keep this in prespective, if the EVO is 200$, the MyTouch Slide should be 10$ then, and carriers should pay us to have dumbphones.

  • greekfuzball

here’s a thought, why don’t we join the rest of the civilized world where the network is universal so we can actually CHOOSE the phone we want and then the plan!!!

    • andy

thats a great a great point! only in north america and asia this happening to. in Europe you have your choice, you can buy your phone and take it to any carrier. they did it the right way. we in america should be setting the standards that world should follow, not the other way around. soon were are going to have govt spectrum that all carriers would be able to use. if all the carriers follow there plan for lte, you would be able take your incredible/iphone to att/tmobile/sprint/verizon. after all we dont buy our computers from our i.s.p. even if they were to subsidized.

    • fujitsujeff

yes yes yes! This should be the way it is. this trap yourself to a network because they have bad rate plans, but the phone I want, need to go!

      • andy

        agreed

  • http://willentrekin.com Will Entrekin

It’s not the Incredible or Evo, but the difference is it’s one of the better devices with T-Mobile. I may not love the phone selection, but I’m a T-Mobile loyalist since they were Voicestream, and it’s hands-down the only company I can say I’ve satisfactorily conducted business with for a decade now. Their plans are awesome ($80 unlimited everything ftw!) and the customer service is unparalleled.

    • http://rugbychix.blogspot.com/ Rugbychix

You can also buy a N1 for 180 with contract at this point…

      • http://www.bumpsinthenight.tv/blog John Reha

That’s not true yet (The N1 being $180), and the whole “change your plan” things kills my desire for that, but my fingers are crossed…

  • woowoo

the evo and the next gen I phone will be the two best phones on the planet….i do not think this price will last long

    • bern

i hope this is true and as long as they don’t run out of RED i think i’ll wait a bit and see what happens…cruise along in my “no contract” state for a bit…

  • websurphur

I would love to switch over to a HTC incredible or HTC EVO but i am stuck with AT&T as i get a employer discount of 25 bucks every month.I hope that AT&T gets something equal to the incredible or the EVO,so that i can atleast ditch my iphone.Especially after seeing FROYO.

    • http://robert.aitchison.org Robert Aitchison

The Nexus one is almost identical to the Incredible and is already available for AT&T 3G

  • FastJoe

Lolz! 180.00 for a phone that is already out of date and has a custom UI that, is worse than most crapware other providers put on their phones…EVO here I come!

    • bern

      bye!

  • TRENT

Some 13 year old kid folks will buy them this phone. I have been with T-MO since they were voicestream as well and I can say they do have great customer service but I would like better phones and a better 3G service! The HTC HD is Cool!

  • GnarlsSparkley

Umm shant we forget this is only 20 bucks cheaper than T-mo’s current flagship device the HD2, I def think its priced about 40 bucks too high and whats with this mail in rebate crap I wish carriers would stop this nonsense.

    • http://willentrekin.com Will Entrekin

I would totally have an HD2 if it ran Android. This’ll appeal to Android users who want a T-Mo phone they can get T-Mo support for.

  • jdubbz

what a joke. for $20 more I can get an EVO and have 4G wimax coverage (i for one live in Chicago). this price won’t last long at all.

  • ebatr8

just be patient there is a lot more things coming to tmobile in the coming months nexus one in retail stores is already a start which should be coming soon and the galaxy s is already being tested by employees and with documents i saw for future releases these two are nothing compared to other things still on the horizon

  • Voice Stream

This is the last straw for me. I’ve been a tmo customer for 15 years now. Their prices are good and service is great. But the network has lagged for far too long. They took forever to roll out 3g and now in the phone dept they are way behind the curve.

I was waiting to Jump to the EVO 4g and wanted to see what they would do for the slide. Tmo is practically asking me to admit I’m a complete dumba$$ to stay with them.

Sorry, TMO. I tried. You sucked. I’m leaving.

    • Boba Fat

      Later skater…

The problem is that T-Mobile thinks that people will see the features and not the specs. Notice the focus on the genius button and faves application. Don’t get me wrong, the interface and usability of the phone is second-to-none. Call it bloatware all you want, when you use it you will be impressed. For instance, have you seen the genius button in action? It’s really something. BUT with the market shifting and MANY more people wanting smartphones, the buzz is specs. Big screen, best processor. That’s why the HD2 has been such a big seller for T-Mo. People read online that it’s top-of-the-line and they’re sold. They don’t care that it’s a Windows Mobile device until they get home with it and it’s crashing 3 times a day.

I can only hope that T-Mobile will see the light and release a device that’s a joy to use like the MT3GS, but has Nexus One-like specs. That’s the rumor, but who knows. T-Mobile always seems to be 2 steps behind.

  • T-MOBILE_REP

people people, settle down with that EVO crap, yeah its a good phone and its full of specs but iltimatly it is on shitty sprint =( they are rolling out their precious WiMax with their fingers crossed hoping to get some more customer if that not to lose more customers. The truth is that T-mobile has already started rolling out HSPA+ here in LA I already have it and let me tell you, 4.9 mbps is amazing!! T-MO hspa+ is already faster than sprints-last-desperate-move WiMax!! Now the MYTOUCH SLIDE WILL BE BETTER THAN YOUR OLD RAZOR 1 to 1,000,000 so before you go crazy and leave to sprint test drive this phone 1ST, it is awesome!! I have been blessed to have one and it is the shit! the phone to have. And with T-Mo launching HSPA+ nation wide by the end of the year, believe me now its the time to be with t-mobile.

This is the proof of wi-max vs haspa+

I’ve been a T-mo customer for 7 years now (with an ill-advised trip to AT&T for 3 months in the middle there), but my issue is not with the network, it’s with the phone selection.

I was an early adopter of the G1, and had (as with many G1 adopters) battery issues. I haven’t been able to USE 3G for the last 8 months because of how badly it drained my battery.

But I looked for a phone to replace it with, and there’s nothing. The HD2 is sold out everywhere (and not what I really want), and the first Android phone that seems to be worth a look is priced at $180. I wanted an N1, but without changing my contract (a nice grandfathered plan) it’s $530.

On the other hand, even canceling my current contract and switching to Sprint to get the Evo is only going to cost me $430 AND I’ll have a cheaper plan.

I’m willing to stick it out for a bit longer (a friend gave me a new battery for the G1), but the phones on the network, specifically Android, have GOT to step up.

  • Gina D

And you get can a refurbished iPhone for $49.99? What’s the point?

Americans obsess too much with the upfront cost of the phone. $140, $160 or $180 is still very cheap for a smartphone.

Worrying about the processor speed is not always reasonable if the processor inside the hardware can do the job and do it well. Geeks get too fascinated with this stuff.

This phone has a slide out keyboard (for those who want it) and the EVO doesn’t. This phone will work all over the word and the EVO will only work off CDMA networks. T-Mobile will let their customers spread the cost of the hardware over the course of 2 years and Sprint won’t.

Again these are two different phones both targeting different segments.

In late 2005 and early 2006 we paid $500 for a new RAZR at Cingular ON CONTRACT.

American buyers are getting too spoiled and accustomed to a sense of entitlement.

  • Dean

Really nice phone with sharp call quality.

We have one in our stores. Looks better in person than the pictures show.

Most noticeable over the previous myTouch and G1 is that this thing is fast. The UI is very responsive even with several apps installed.

The model we have does seem to have a more stable antenna too.

  • Nathan

This phone has some real nice features and T-Mobile is the best cell phone company I have ever dealt with. I will put up with an Android phone that is a nanosecond slower than a phone on Verizon in exchange for a way cheaper rate plan and way better customer service.

  • Sikety

    EVO = $200 + ($10 extra per month X 24 months) = $440 – 180 = $260 more than MyTouch slide. Better retake calculus BoyGenius.

    • Math Teacher

that doesn’t look like calculus to me…

  • Goootmo

People! Go to your local tmobile store and check this phone out. It is much more than what boygenius is leading on. And as far as 4G and leaving tmo for sprint you people are crazy. Read up on hspa+ you won’t regret staying with tmo! Faster than 4G? Ummm, yes!

  • Hshariff

The fact that users already pay 99 for older Android phones and that the old Data plans for tmo are so cheap is one reason the new phone has a higher price tag. If you wanted the same plan price you will always pay more for the handset period. I think they did their market reasearch well.
