BlackBerry Curve 8900 drops on AT&T this Friday

News

It was only two weeks ago that AT&T announced it would be dropping the Curve 8900 sometime this Summer, and one week ago that we told you it would run for $199.99 on a two-year after a $100 MIR. Well now AT&T has finally come out with an official launch date for both online and in retail stores: this Friday, the 22nd of May. All you have to do now is decide whether or not you want to drop an extra $100 to get the 3G-enabled Bold.

    @ Blackberry Bold

    you know this how?

  • RoBBold

I have my first shipment of 8900′s and have been comparing it to my Bold. The 8900 feels awesome, the screen is gorgeous.

2G – Longer Battery life- better for voice and email

3G – Best for surfing Internet – other than WiFi

If you liked the curve you will LOVE the 8900 a great improvement.
Faster, more memory, better keys, better display, better battery door, better build quality

I agree that the price will drop to $99 for the 8900 and $199 for the bold only after the Iphone3 launch dies down. September maybee?

I was wondering, if I was to get the Curve 8900 from T-Mobile and unlock it for use on AT&T, would all of the phones features still be available and work properly? That’s mainly regarding features such as the internet, e-mail, GPS,and anything else network related…

    Please reply! =)

    Small, 480 x 360, 3.2MP camera…

are the only advantages I see over the Bold… price seems negligible here, but may also be a factor.

You are right – I guess if you only use email, or you live in an area with no 3G, it makes sense.

I question a lot of what’s being said here. I has pretty happy with my 8300 Curve, way back when! Voice quality was great, signal strength was great, and using EDGE on the internet was just fine, and for those that say it was slow, I put it head to head with my 8830 on VZW plenty of times, and the difference in speed was very miner. I’m one of those people that is gonna give this 8900 a try! 3G, while it has gotten better, still sucks a lot of the time. I welcome a device that will work all of the time, except some of the time!!!

Lol….meant—-Instead of, some of the time!

I was so ready to upgrade from my 8100 Pearl. I’ve got Wi-Fi at home and 5 bars of EDGE. Even so, I figure if I’m gonna be outside on my scoot all summer, why do I need Wi-Fi?

Too late AT&T. I’ll wait and jump to Verizon when the 9630 Tour drops.

    8700, 8100, 8310, 8110, 9000 and then back to the 8110…my lineup of berrys.

when it comes down to battery i declare RIM the best. however my bold would die constantly. and it had nothing to do with a lemon either, i worked for big blue so i could easily get that replaced. 2 bolds and i could barely keep a charge. 3G wasnt really that big of a deal keeping mind mind how blackberry compresses their data packets for transmission. the back of almost every bold i saw was constantly falling off…bad design on their part.

8900 = better camera, smaller size and edge…which makes for one great phone. if youre looking for 3G and internet browsing, a blackberry shouldnt be your first stop. there are many phones that deal with web browsing better. blackberrys are for 2 things…communication and reliability.

and lets not forget about the strain being put on at&ts 3G network due to the most coveted internet device right now. my experience with post-iphone 3G data speeds has not been good. and its not like cleveland has spotty UMTS reception…we have a big corporate office here and across the PA border so its almost a complete blanket.

i have been more than satisfied by an EDGE blackberry and actually returned by bold.

You can get the BlackBerry Bold for $199 at RadioShack and it doesn’t even have a mail in rebate.

    So the Bold FTW!

    @ kyle.

Wow. You’re so smart. And smug. With all your fancy words.

Defend the new curve? First off, how ’bout that some folks don’t really care all that much about the 3g component? That they prefer a better camera and a sleeker, sexier form factor? I’m a Bold man (double entendre intended). And although I wouldn’t mind the Bold to be a bit thinner, I love the keyboard – better than the 8900′s. The 8900 has plent of merit, even without the vaunted 3G.

My biggest issue with the Bold is that the camera lens isn’t flush with the body hence it’s a dust and grime magnet. That articulated well enough for you? You’re on my shit list right next to man genius, david thande, and stevenglansburg. What you douches have in common is that you spout off like you’re better than everyone else. Pisses me off.

As Marilyn Whirlwind once observed, live amd let live.

    @ Kyle, part 2.

Sorry about my earlier attack. Sort of. I mean you’re just so patronizing without any demonstrated merit to be so. Didn’t BG and NickyHilton write rave reviews about the 8900? In fact, the lack of 3G appears to be this device’s only significant shortcoming.

At least you didn’t write “first,” like a dickhead. Only Moe pulled that one off to demonstrate how boring the topic was – not to show everyone how cool he was and not bc he was, uh, first.

If Josef is write that you’re living with your mom, I have no business attacking you.

    Very Truly Yours,

    Conrad Hernandez, Esq.

    Fuck. Right, not write.

Better camera? Its a little better. But if you’ve used the Bold camera running OS 5, then you know that the gap is very slim between the two in terms of quality.

    Sleeker form factor? Not by much. Measurements? 4.49″ x 2.6″ x 0.59″ (BOLD) vs 4.29″ x 2.36″ x 0.53″ (8900). In lay terms, 4% shorter, 9% less width, and 10% less depth. Not exactly dramatically sleeker/sexier, huh?

2 channels vs 8 channels is only applicable in scenarios where EDGE can d/load the data quickly. If a site is 394kb, a 3G phone will always d/load it quicker and thus render it quicker. Whereas factoring in EDGE having less latency at times, small sites DO in fact d/load and render quicker on the 8 channel device. But, like I’ve said before, I can be doing this and not miss my calls/emails/IM’s/etc – but if you’re on EDGE you’re going to miss stuff and become good friends with your voicemail =)

  • Chris

Half my state doesnt have 3g yet anyways. I love the 8900. I dont use data plans anyways (wifi is better than any 3g network) Personally i can’t tell a speed difference between 3g and edge.

  • jeremy

    not interested.

  • Matt

Just received the new Curve after running with the bold for 9 Months.
Didnt think I could be tempted away from the bold but the 8900 looks so much better,
but why oh why would you design a handset in this day and age and not give it 3G as standard, surley they should have learnt from Apple’s mistake with the iphone????
