TetherBerry for Mac enters (semi) public beta

Software

Back in March we gave you an extensive hands on review of a great little BlackBery app called TetherBerry. In short, TetherBerry allows you to connect your compatible BlackBerry handset to your Windows-based computer via USB in order to share your cellular data connection with your PC. The nice thing about it of course, is that you can tether without the need for pricey monthly plan add-ons from your carrier. Until recently the application was only available for Windows users and a select few taking part in the private Mac OS X beta. Fret not however, as TetherBerry is ready to take its OS X app to the next level as of this morning. Though it will still technically be in private beta, Mac users can now head over to the Mac beta page and sign up for an invite. There may be a bit of a waiting list but hey, at least you’ll be one step closer to getting your Mac/BlackBerry tethering on…

“you can tether without the need for pricey monthly plan add-ons from your carrier.”

Really? Why would any1 pay the pricey tethering plans for their carrier then,? My point is they are still paying for it, is there a difference in quality?

    Yes mac users like Blackberry

I have an MBP and a Bold, so yes there are a few of us mac users that are actually not entirely blind to the presence of other phones on the market. I tether using nothing but what comes with the computer and it works perfectly, absolutely no need for TetherBerry.

yes, you still pay for the data. I see no way around that. besides, Mac DM will support this anyways…without any apps

  • Jay

Elias, DJ, you can tether with your Mac and Berry natively? How?

  • Heathen

I don’t get it, I can tether my Bold to my PC without this app via Bluetooth or USB natively. What is the need for this?

  • Justin

Its for people on a carrier that charges an additional fee if you tether. For an example on Telus you can get 500mb of data with their $35 bundle, but any tethering usage is charged at $8/ MB on top of your plan. This program makes the carrier think you are using the data on the phone itself.

Yeah, I tether on both Macs and PCs without any other software, and have done it with several blackberries. I do it over Bluetooth these days. What exactly does this app do?

Oh, I remember for the Mac I downloaded a modem script (for free). Didn’t need anything on Windows.
